Poetry & Literary Devices Final Project

Due: May 15 (A) & 16 (B)

Sandra Cisneros tells her readers that she decided to write her novel, The House on Mango Street, because “you will always be Mango Street. You can’t erase what you know. You can’t forget who you are.” The purpose of this project is to create your own book which will help you remember what you know, as well as show others who you are.

Your book must have the following items:

• An Original Cover (5 points)

- Thoughtfully created

- Neatly done

• Table of Contents (5 points)

- Neatly done and typed

- No spelling, formatting, or grammatical errors

• 10 Chapters (5 points each)

- Minimum 100 words each

- Typed

- No spelling, formatting, or grammatical errors

- Uses first person point of view

- See back of paper for details

• TOTAL POSSIBLE: 60 POINTS

Your project must be typed and put together in a report cover. You may illustrate your book if you choose.

Your chapters must be chosen from the following subjects:

• Your Name (must include)

• Your Neighborhood (must include)

• Games or Favorite Toys from your Childhood

• A Time You Got Into Trouble

• A Time You Saw Someone Else Get Into Trouble

• Advice From an Adult

• A Positive Story From Your Experiences at School

• A Negative Story From Your Experiences at School

• A Special Family Member

• A Happy Time For You

• Going to Work

• A Special Holiday

• A Special Birthday

• The Big Game

• A Birth

• Life in Virginia

• 1 Additional Chapter on Anything You Wish.

A chapter should be at least 100 words. You may write your chapter in a poem form, as a story, or follow the free verse format that Esperanza uses in House on Mango Street. You must write at least THREE poems and THREE vignettes, the remaining 4 are your choice.
