Hall and released by Jennie C. Riley in 1969. It won the award for the Best Country Song by a female artist. The song concerns a single mother living in a suburban area called Harper Valley. At this time, divorces were commonly called “Failed Marriages” and the families were referred to as “Broken Families”. There was a stigma attached to children of “broken families” as well as to women who could not hold their families together. The TV sitcom, “The Brady Bunch” was the first time America had been exposed to a blended family on television. The first time a married couple was shown on television sharing a bed was on “The Munsters” and the animated prime time show, “The Flintstones”. They were careful to present Stella Johnson as a widow and not a divorcee or a single mother. During 1965, the national divorce rate was at 26% of marriages while it jumped to 48% by 1975. This was largely due to the social mores of the time. Stella Johnson receives a note from the PTA of her daughter’s middle school voicing concern about her parenting. She decides to go to their next meeting and address some issues. CITATION Har68 \l 1033 (Harper Valley PTA) Stella uses the line “This is just a little Peyton Place and you’re all Harper Valley Hypocrites.” CITATION Har68 \l 1033 (Harper Valley PTA) CITATION Goo15 \l 1033 (Search) She addresses the central themes of the 1960’s in the areas of Women’s Liberation and the increasing number of non-traditional families. She also is a woman with her own voice. She is not willing to meekly accept the judgment of those that she considers to be no better than herself.
