Position Description- St. Paul Church Pastor St. Paul Evangelical & Reformed Church of Napoleon, MOSummary Position Description: The Pastor is the spiritual leader of St. Paul Church. He is the shepherd of the congregation. As such, he provides overall leadership through prayer, preaching, articulating the vision, and ensuring spiritual care and growth of the congregation so that together we further the work of the Lord's Church. The Pastor performs these duties within the guidelines of this Position Description, the St. Paul Church Constitution and Bylaws, and under the direction of the Church Council. Personal: Has a vital growing relationship with Jesus Christ; lives an exemplary life based on Biblical principles; exhibits love, joy, peace, patience, kindness and self-control; encourages members to pray through personal example of daily prayer habits; has the ability to develop good interpersonal relationships; is confident in his calling to the ministry. Professional: St. Paul Church prefers a bible college or seminary graduate. The Pastor will keep informed on matters relating to the ministry through books, periodicals, classes or seminars. He will be comfortable with organizing and leading members to achieve results and growth in their faith. He will strive to keep up on current events and new strategies as they relate to teaching the congregation. Essential Functions and Responsibilities:Preaching and Teaching Sunday Worship Personally prepare and deliver Biblically based, easy to understand, Sunday worship message relevant to daily living. (Except during vacation weeks or other authorized leave time.) Work in concert with other church leaders in the preparation of worship order and participation. Provide worship order information on Thursday by noon for bulletin preparation.Special Services These include Lent, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and others as may be requested by the Church Council Prepare and/or work with church leaders on these special events. These events may include other members/groups in participation. The Pastor and others decide on roles and delivery. Plan and service the sacrament of Holy Communion on Maundy Thursday or Good Friday, Easter, Pentecost, World Communion Day, and Christmas. Communion will be administered once a month. A Communion calendar will be completed by the Pastor and Church Council for the year.Special Events in the ChurchMarriages Performs all member weddings (either the bride or groom or both are members) that take place in St. Paul Church or on the grounds; prepare and schedule Christian premarital counseling of the bride and groom prior to all weddings that take place inside the church or offsite if officiating in the name of St. Paul Church. Performs non-member weddings at his discretion. Christian premarital counseling is required if the ceremony is performed in the name of St. Paul Church. The couple shall be required to pay a facility fee for the use of the church or grounds. Funerals Provides spiritual support to the immediate family of members in the loss of a loved one. Personally prepares and delivers the memorial service when requested. The family shall be responsible to contact the pastor to discuss funeral arrangements. For non-members who request use of the sanctuary for funeral services, the St. Paul Church Pastor or another Christian Pastor may perform the memorial service, with the prior approval by the Pastor and Church Council.Believers Baptism / Infant Dedication Arranges dates with individual families and consults the church calendar to schedule counseling and the service. Counsels with the believer and/or family, making sure they understand believer baptism and/or infant dedication. Performs believer baptism. Performs infant dedications.Youth Bible Instruction Personally prepares and teaches youth (7th and 8th grade) classes designed to prepare them to be accepted into full membership in St. Paul Church. Curriculum and duration of instruction to be discussed and approved by the Church Council. Curriculum shall be biblically based and include; but not limited to the Evangelical Catechism and the history of St. Paul Church and shall be in accord with the faith statements in the St. Paul Church Constitution and Bylaws.Visitation of Members and Attendees - Caring for Individuals Visits homes on a need/desired/requested basis Visits members who are hospitalized or home bound, administering communion when requested. Shares in this responsibility with the Caring for Others Committee and church members. Visits non-members at the request of family or at his discretion.Pastoral Counseling Provides counseling as requested by individuals or families Is available for Christian ministry to church members and members of the community during times or hardship or loss.____________________________________________Community Involvement/Evangelism/Outreach If possible, attends Ministerial Alliance Meetings – reports to the church body or Church Council as necessary and seek St. Paul Church involvement when required. Recognizes community outreach opportunities and acts on these through appropriate St. Paul Church committees including Evangelism Works with other church leaders to implement ministries that reach the un-churched, inactive members and new residents of our community with the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.Christian Leadership and Education Is actively involved in the development of Sunday School and Youth programs. Strives to increase participation including working with Sunday School officers and youth leaders. Creates a focus for adult spiritual study and growth. Actively participates and models personal spiritual education including Sunday School, Bible study, and activities with members outside of Sunday morning worship.Personal Leadership Works in concert with St. Paul Church leaders and committees to help create a long term vision. Guides, aligns and mentors various groups and ministries of the church toward the shared vision and common purpose. Evaluates programs for improvement, deletion or addition. Communicates with appropriate committees, the Church Council and the congregation as needed. Meets and works with the Cabinet as stated in the Constitution and Bylaws of St Paul Church.Administration of the ministry staff and committees Organizes and prepares in advance of meetings Maintains a personal calendar, available to the Church Council, so that members will know the Pastor’s approximate availability Attends monthly Church Council meetings. Advises and provides insights as appropriate. Provides detailed monthly Pastor’s Report at Church Council meetings. Attends committee meetings as appropriate. Keeps committees informed of any Pastoral plans and actions that affect their mission. Has a working knowledge of each committee including current and future efforts. Provides input and spiritual guidance. Is responsible with church finances. Uses money for approved, planned programs. Works with Church Council and Treasurer as needed in financial matters. Provides an annual detailed report to the Church Council and additional reports as requested regarding ministry actions and progress toward church goals. Provides a copy of this at year end to the Publications Committee for printing.The Pastor reports to the St. Paul Church Council as specified in the St. Paul Church Constitution and Bylaws. Annual Review: A formal performance and compensation review shall be conducted annually by the Church Council every September. The Church Council will provide a summary of this review and any recommendations to the congregation at the annual meeting in November. ................
