All:

• Can you handle an hour without electricity? The Green Team will celebrate "Earth Hour" today as part of a kick-off for April, Earth Month.  Basically, this activity entails turning off all classroom lights and computers for one hour during the school day, during 4th and 5th periods when kids are in advisory or at lunch.  The kids calculated that we would save 54,000 watts during that time.

• This week in advisory will feature HIV/AIDS Awareness activities organized by a group of our 12th grade students.

• A group of students from Regis Montessori high school in Ohio will be visiting 10th grade advisories this Thursday during p5 to discuss diversity.

• Applications for the 2008 Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) are now available. To submit an application, students can visit the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) website at dycd. The deadline to submit a complete application is May 16. SYEP is a seven-week program that runs from July 1 through August 16. Participants can work up to 25 hours a week while earning $7.15 an hour in job placements that include government agencies, hospitals, summer camps, nonprofits, small businesses, law firms, museums, and sports and retail organizations.  All New York City residents between the ages of 14 and 21 are eligible to apply. For additional information, see Ms. Greenfield, call 311 or the DYCD Youthline at (800) 246-4646.

• Starting tomorrow, Chico Bags will be on sale in the lobby.  These are fun, sturdy, compactable nylon bags that are a perfect replacement for the use-and-throw-away plastic bag.  They come in ten different colors and cost $5 each.  The money we raise on these bags will go toward additional recycling bins in our school, starting with the cafeteria.

• Try-outs for the girls’ soccer team this Friday at the field on E 96th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenue. We will meet in the lobby at 3:30 pm. The try-outs will be from 4:00pm to 5:30 pm.
