March 13 – 15 JOURNEY: A RETREAT FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Sponsored by Baptist General Association of Virginia

Theme: SENT (John 20:21)

Youth will explore what it means to live as “sent” people. As Christians, our calling is to live out God’s mission every day whether it’s in our own neighborhood or another country. We have been sent, but what does that look like? This interactive weekend will be a time for youth to learn about what God’s mission is and what that looks like in the community of faith. They will be introduced to other cultures, listen to the experiences of churches on mission in Virginia, and begin to develop their own stories of faith within the larger church community. Barriers will be torn down. Differences and commonalities will be celebrated. We have been sent as one church with one mission. Where are we going?

For registration, more information, criminal background check information for your leaders, and other forms that must be completed prior to the event, please contact Karen Rackett at karen.rackett@ or by phone at 800-255-2428, Ext. 2243.

Rise Against Hunger – We sincerely thank the churches and groups who have recently given generously to Rise Against Hunger. All of us as individuals and churches are challenged to set aside money daily or weekly for this mission and turn in all your gifts to the JRBA by Monday, May 13. Let us strive to have $9,500.00 available for supplies for our packaging project at Maysville Baptist on Sunday, June 7, 2020.

A very fine Spanish Langauge Worship Service was led by Rev. Michael Khol at First Baptist Dillwyn on Sunday, February 9, with 27 people present. These Spanish language services will be held on the first Sunday of each month at FBC with the next one scheduled for March 1, at 3:00 PM. Please invite Spanish-speaking people of our area to atttend these services.

Hope for Appalachia – Please package as many Hope Boxes for Appalachia as possible and turn them into the JRBA Office, Mt. Zion, or Tar Wallet by Wednesday, March 18. These boxes will bless many lives. They

are being collected for Bell Elementary, the school adopted by JRBA for this school year.

Our JRBA will be sending a mission team to the Bland Ministry Center May 17 – 23, 2020. Let Gwynn or Phyllis Tyler know if you want to volunteer to be a member of this team by April 1. Let us all pray for this mission and donate the items needed.

The Blue Ridge Food Distribution continues to take place at Crystal Cathedral on the second and fourth

Fridays of each month. Volunteers are needed, beginning at 9:30 AM. Your help is needed and appreciated.

In Christ’s Love,

JRBA HISPANIC WORSHIP SERVICES

[pic]

Dear JRBA,

I want to take a moment to update you on a very exciting movement. If you noticed this section of the February newsletter you saw that we held a Spanish Worship Service on February 9. There were 27 in attendance! Let me just say that it was a huge blessing to be a part of.

I want to share a couple of points with you. First and foremost, I really want to highlight the partnership of the JRBA in getting this put together. First Baptist Dillwyn, specifically, has made their church available for this group to meet – THANK YOU.

The second point involves a couple of testimonies that really play well into how you and your church can get involved! The first is from a mother who had three grown children – all present at the service. In tears, she mentioned how she had been praying for something like this for years, and never imagined that God would give her the chance to worship in her native language with all of her sons together. What a blessing to be a part of answering a prayer. The second testimony is an example of what each of you and your churches can do to get plugged in. Someone in my church heard my announcement about the February service so he happened to mention it to a man he works with that speaks Spanish. Not only did that man come, but he brought his wife, three kids and his mother-in-law. I had never met the man before he walked into the sanctuary that day. Many of you come in contact with people who primarily speak Spanish. Please feel free (even emboldened) to share that a new Spanish service has begun and all are welcome to attend. Moving forward it will always be on the first Sunday of the month at 3:00 PM at First Baptist Dillwyn.

I wanted to share this exciting news! Please let your churches know to pray and invite Spanish speaking folks to our next gathering on March 1, a

3:00 PM. Again, the service is 100% in Spanish with no real time for translating into English.

Thank you all for your continued support and love.

In Jesus Christ,

Michael

CHURCH OUTREACH

On January 22, some of the Cedar church family visited Heritage Hall Nursing Home and enjoyed a time of singing and fellowship with the residents there. The Women on Mission packed 60 Hope for Appalachia boxes.

Chestnut Grove is working on Hope for Appalachia boxes.

Fitzgerald Memorial is working on Hope for Appalachia boxes. On Wednesday, January 15, Fitzgerald held a Senior Fun Day with lunch, music and games for 21 senior adults. They had another Senior Fun Day on February 19.

Mt. Zion’s WMU donated $500 to Pure Water Pure Love.

Mulberry Grove’s major focus for February was the Hope Boxes for Appalachia. This project will continue into March. Mulberry Grove’s Kids’ Bible Club made valentines for the residents at Heritage Hall. Members continue to volunteer at the bi-monthly food distribution at the Crystal Cathedral, and the outreach ministry is ongoing. Rev. Khol and others are involved in the newly started Hispanic Worship Services. Gwynn Tyler served on a construction crew with the Liberty Baptist (Appomattox) Mission Team to Honduras from January 23 – February 7. The emphasis for March will be completing the Hope boxes and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering.

The congregation of Sharon is contributing Boxes of Hope for Appalachia and growing a special fund for Rise Against Hunger. Rose of Sharon made 78 quarts of Hearty Chicken Noodle Soup to meet local needs, and to sell as a fundraiser for the newly-constructed Fellowship Hall. They also supplied food items for two school children through the Backpack Ministry and continue to provide meals and visits to those who are sick or homebound.

Tar Wallet will be providing lunch for one of the Lenten Services to be held on Wednesdays during Lent. They have collected 40 backpacks for the Bland Ministry Center’s School Supply Drive in honor of Bland’s 40th Anniversary. Laura Higgins is assisting the Hope for Appalachia Team by working with and packing Boxes of Hope for transport. Tar Wallet has completed 135 boxes, 104 stuffed animals, 1 coat, 6 t-shirts, 77 hats, 33 scarves, 65 pairs of gloves, 3 crocheted headbands, 12 three-piece sets (hats, gloves, & scarves), 16 two-piece sets (hats & gloves) – they have an early start on next fall’s distribution! Tar Wallet is collecting food for a family in need. They are providing meals for an individual for a couple of weeks. They are collecting donations for Cumberland Christmas Mother and Rise Against Hunger.

LOCAL HYGIENCE RESOURCE PROGRAM

Britney Richardson, Buckingham County Schools’ Resource Worker, recently sent out a request to local churches for their assistance. She is trying to get a hygiene resource program up and running at the primary, elementary, and middle school locations with the availability to take items to the pre-school as needed also. Her goal is to motivate the children to” feel their best” so that they can “do their best”. She is enlisting community support to jump start and maintain this resource to reach the children and their families.

Britany would like donations for the following items for a variety of ethnically diverse needs: shampoo/conditioner, toothbrushes/toothpaste, hair brushes/combs, hair ties/ponytail holders/hair clips, hair products such as gel, mousse, hairspray, leave-in conditioner, body lotion, feminine products, deodorant, and body wash/soap.

All donations would be greatly appreciated. Britney can be reached at 434-960-6100, Extension 22112, or by email at

brichardson@.

VIRGINIA BAPTIST DISASTER RESPONSE

For more than 50 years, the Virginia Baptist Disaster Response Team has been assisting those affected by natural disasters. “We respond all over the country, we’ve actually been to Puerto Rico,” said volunteer Jeff Kinder. “Our primary goal is to get the homeowner back in the home as quickly as possible and as safe as possible.”

Volunteers traveled more than 5 hours from Richmond to Tazewell County to assist flood victims after heavy rains caused serious damage across part of the area recently. Approximately 450 people in 100 homes were evacuated in the town of Richlands due to significant flooding from storms during the first week of February. Because the damage was not widespread enough to qualify for FEMA assistance, BGAV is committing $50,000 to the effort of rebuilding.

Join this effort by giving and helping BGAV to double that amount so everyone whose home was damaged by the storm can be served. The goal is to ensure the residents that Virginia Baptists will be by their side in the long term with funding and hands-on help as they face the challenges in the weeks and months ahead.

This storm has not been in the news, so many supporters are not yet aware of this need. In the next few weeks, the community will rely heavily on Virginia Baptist Disaster Response for recovery and rebuild. Assessors and Cleanup Teams are being sent to work alongside the many local Disaster Response volunteers who are already on the ground helping their neighbors.

You can support the work in Tazewell county with funds to help make these critical repairs possible – to restore hope to people in that community. You can donate online at with Visa or Mastercard. If you wish to mail a check, make it payable to BGAV with “Disaster Response” on the memo line. Mail it to: BGAV, C/O Virginia Baptist Disaster Response, 2828 Emerywood Parkway, Henrico, VA 23294.

To stay up-to-date on Disaster Response, go to and click on “Sending Volunteers” and “Disaster Relief and Response”. You can donate online, sign up to volunteer, and even get online training through the website.

JRBA LEARNS AND GROWS>>>

Several members from Buckingham attended The King Players on February 22, at Concord Baptist Church. It was a powerful presentation of the Gospel entitled, “Which Way?”

Mt. Zion Holds Children’s Missions Day

[pic] [pic]

Mt. Zion had six children who participated in Children’s Missions Day on February 15, along with thousands of children across the country. The theme this year was “Reach Out”. The day started with breakfast followed by a game that went with the theme. They painted rocks with messages of God’s love. The children colored pictures and played together while the rocks dried. They enjoyed a wonderful lunch prepared by Marilyn Snoddy. Afterwards they gathered all the rocks and took them out into the community and hid them. The children had so much fun painting the rocks and coming up with places to put them. The girls and their leaders are praying the rocks will be a blessing to those that find them. They are looking forward to next year’s Missions Day! During February, Mt. Zion’s GAS have been learning that God pursues them because He loves them and they can trust God to take care of them. They’ve been studying Matthew 6:26. They have made Birds’ Nest cookies, been on a scavenger hunt for items to use to serve others and pursue God, made cereal bird feeders, and made floating paper flowers (amazing!). They learned about missionaries to Cambodia and played a game called “Monkey Steals the Seat” that Cambodian children like to play. The girls have also memorized their motto, “Go Forward” and their GA pledge. They are currently working on their Lifestyle verse, Micah 6:8.

OTHER EVENTS>>>

On January 31, six from Buckingham joined the members of Arvon for a spaghetti dinner prepared and served by the pastor and his family for Game Night. Everyone enjoyed the time fellowshipping together.

On Sunday, February 16, the Cedar Youth Committee prepared and served a Valentine’s Spaghetti Dinner for the church family. Many thanks to the leaders of the Youth Committee and, especially, to the Youth who did a great job of serving the delicious meal of salad, spaghetti, beverages and desserts.

Chestnut Grove’s WMU Annual Enlistment/Enlargement Banquet was held on Sunday, February 16. It was attended by 18 ladies. Food was delicious and all were challenged by a True/False Bible game. Gifts were then exchanged and a fun time was had by all.

8

Sunday, February 16 was the Valentines Luncheon at Fitzgerald with 46 in attendance. A chocolate auction was held raising over $200.00 for the Women on Mission group.

[pic]

On February 2, Jones Chapel had a chili cook-off lunch as a fundraiser for 2020 mission trips. The Youth are working hard to raise funds for their upcoming trips. On Valentine’s Day evening, the Youth hosted a dinner that they helped prepare, serve, and clean up. The donations went into the Youth Fund for their activities.

IN APPRECIATION>>>

JRBA,

The family of Mary Kelly* thanks you all so very much for your donation of money. It was so sweet to reach out to us. We have a long road ahead of us, but the faith of the Lord is always with us! Again, thank you from the hearts of Mary Kelly’s family: Scott and Lori Kelly, Keith and Heather Kelly (Sons & Wives) and Suzanne Blankenship (Sister).

God Bless with Love,

Suzanne

*Mary Kelly lost her home and everything in it to a fire. The Benevolence Fund assisted.

Greetings,

Go. Make Disciples. Teach. Jesus commissioned His followers for a purpose: to teach His ways to the whole world so others can know and grow in relationship with Him. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes responds to this commission with “Let’s Go”! This rally cry sounded in our 2019 camps and echoed throughout the FCA ministry as we made and discipled more coaches and athletes to influence the world. FCA engaged millions with the Gospel, equipped them with God’s Word, and empowered disciples to make disciples.

Your investment in coaches and athletes make you an important part of God’s movement to influence the world with the Gospel. In 2019, we reached over 2 million coaches and athletes, discipling them into growing relationships with Jesus Christ. You can celebrate with us that 50,577 faith decisions were made through FCA last year with your help. This happened through 805 camps, Huddles worldwide, the distribution of 190,832 Bibles, and 500 Fields of Faith events.

…Thank you for your support. Through your generosity, coaches and athletes are being transformed by Jesus Christ around the world.

Peace and Blessings,

Shane Willliamson

President & CEO

JRBA,

Thank you for your continued partnership with the Pregnancy Support Center of Southside Virginia. Through your faithful generosity, God continues to grow this ministry, meeting the needs of many more pregnant women, parenting women and men, and their children.

Warmly,

Kathleen Holsopple

Executive Director

Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Pregnancy Support Center of Southside Virginia received $100 each through the JRBA Regular Budget for 2019-2020.

9

James River Baptist Association,

I want to thank the Association for the $100 contribution for my recent mission trip to Honduras. Besides helping with some expenses, I was able to use some of it to help a family that was traveling home to Nicaragua. The man and his wife and two children had been in Guatemala and were robbed. They showed up at Hermon Baptist Church in Siguatepeque where we attended church on Sunday morning. They needed money for food and bus tickets home. We were able to collect enough money to send them on their way.

Our team worked on two building projects. The project at Iglesia Bautista Nuevo Pacto (New Covenant Baptist Church) involved building three Sunday School classrooms on the second floor. This is a church we built in the past. At Betania Baptist Church we constructed partitions for rooms in the medical clinic there. Part of the team conducted Bible School for children. Attendance varied from 135 to 180 children.

We had a very successful trip. Besides doing the work, we were able to renew old friendships and meet new people both at the churches and in the community. Thanks again for your prayers and financial support.

In Christ,

Gwynn Tyler

FROM YOUR MODERATOR>>>

I hope everyone is well with the flu running rampant! “Wash your hands!” – that’s what’s being drilled into our heads, but please do so!

We are hopeful that many of you are considering the upcoming opportunity to attend the Revitalize Conference on March 21. In a time when churches often struggle, we need to focus on ways to effectively reach the lost. Sign up by March 11, to participate!

The clock is ticking down for the Hope for Appalachia trip. Please pray for the team and for the children whose lives will be touched. The floods have really hit Kentucky and other places. Please pray for all who have been affected.

Sallie Mowbray called February the “LOVE” month. We miss Sallie! There has been a lot of loss this year and much sickness as well. Remember, “Love the Lord your God with al your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind.” “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

In Christ,

Marilyn Snoddy
