Full circle will give a slightly larger finished tree and a more useful napkin. If you plan to having them just for decorating or have limited amount of fabric then the semi-circle would be better. I used the “Cut A Round” ruler. This ruler goes from 6” to 19” by 1-inch intervals. If you do not have a ruler to cut circles, you can make your own paper pattern. My samples are 15” in diameter for both the semi-circle and full circle. This makes a nice cocktail size napkin. For a dinner size napkin 18”to 20” would work the best. How to cut and sew the Christmas Tree Napkins:Press and starch (or use Best Press) both fabrics. If you are using a paper pattern you could layer both fabrics together right sides together. If you are using a circle ruler fold each fabric in half [quarters] placing the long edges along the fold and bottom edge [both edges will be on folds], cut.For each napkin, match one piece of the print and one piece of the contrast fabric right sides together. Pin the edges and sew ?” around leaving a 3-4” section open for turning. For the semi-circle start on the straight edge. On the semi-circle clip the corners, turn right side out, gently push out around the edges and corners.Press the napkins flat with a steam iron rolling the seams between your fingers to get the seams as sharp as possible. At the opening press the raw edges inside and press to stay neat and in stitch all the way around the napkins as desired. The topstitching will close and secure the opening used to turn the work. Press flat.Folding the napkin:[Full circle: fold down about a little under a 1/3 – my 15” circle I folded down 4 ?”, continue to follow the rest of the fan folding instructions.]From the straight edge measure about a 1/3 of the way across (mine was 5” for my 15” circle) Fold from the top along the 45-degree angle indicated on the pattern back towards the right side. Make another fold from the larger side matching the first fold. Basically, it is just a fan fold off center. Once the shape s adjusted, iron and steam the folds in place. If desired stitch in matching threads along the first fold so it will be easier in the future to the starting point. In the picture at the top of the instructions, the ones with the red are cut using a full circle. When folding you can either fold with 2 or 3 folding lines to give a different look. The ones with the green are cut from the semi-circle, these will have the 3 folding lines.Different ideas for finishing your napkins.Use a decorative stitch for your topstitching.Use a decorative stitch, ribbon or rick rack ?” to 1” above the cutting line before you sew your 2 pieces of fabric together. You will need to have stabilizer underneath the stitching so it will not pucker. Use your serger to finish the edge with either a rolled edge or wide stitch depending on the look you want. This way you will have your fabric right sides together (on semi-circle you will want to stitch the straight edge 1st with right sides together, press the seam open then serger the rounded edge.) ................
