RESPECT LIFE CORNER

Prompted by the Holy Spirit- Forty days have passed since we celebrated the joyful feast of the Nativity of the Lord.  Today is the blessed day when Jesus was presented in the Temple by Mary and Joseph.  Outwardly he was fulfilling the Law, but in reality He was coming to meet his believers.  Simeon and Anna, prompted by the Holy Spirit, came to the Temple and recognized the Lord and praised Him with exultation.  Each time we gather for Mass, we come together through the Holy Spirit to encounter Christ.  In the Eucharist, we recognize Him in the breaking of the bread, until He comes again, revealed to us in glory. Learn, Act, Connect, Pray: Mary and Joseph present their newborn son in the Temple, even though Jesus, the Son of God, is already “consecrated to the Lord,” and Mary has no need for purification.  Yet their humble and obedient ways fulfill the Law enabling us to see our salvation in Jesus.  Just as Mary carries her baby son to the Temple, she presents us to the Lord through her intercessions.  In prayer, review times you were prompted by the Holy Spirit in your life? What was your response? Let’s work for joyful openness to what Christ calls us to say and do in the sorrows and joys of our lives; always remembering that Mary, the mother of the Christ child, is also our mother as we place our trust in her Son.

Purchase SPPCS “Scrip Cards” for your shopping and gift giving needs!

Scrip cards make great gifts and in addition, consider purchasing “scrip cards” to use in place of cash, checks or credit cards for purchases you make.

How does that help St. Augustine families? Each SPPS student family is required to earn $250 each year in fund raising. Plus, each student must pay $400 registration and book fees. Then the tuition begins. At the end of each month the rebates from scrip sales are tabulated and applied to the family’s account. You may designate a particular family or St. Augustine students as a group in which case it will be equally divided.   Order forms are located in magazine rack in front vestibule of church.    Please consider trying this program and perhaps add an item each month to help our parish support the SPPS/St Aug. families with absolutely no cost to you.  Order forms may be returned in collection basket with check or given to Betty or Annette Schreder or any SPPS student family.  Any questions may be directed to same people.

The Third Commandment: Remember to Keep Holy the Lord’s Day

Let’s see what is taught in the Catechism of the Catholic Church about the Third Commandment: Remember to Keep Holy the Lord’s Day. Let’s now look at Sunday as a day of grace and rest from work.

2184 Just as God "rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done," (Genesis 2:2) human life has a rhythm of work and rest. The institution of the Lord's Day helps everyone enjoy adequate rest and leisure to cultivate their familial, cultural, social, and religious lives.

2185 On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord's Day, the performance of the works of mercy, and the appropriate relaxation of mind and body. Family needs or important social service can legitimately excuse from the obligation of Sunday rest. The faithful should see to it that legitimate excuses do not lead to habits prejudicial to religion, family life, and health.

“The charity of truth seeks holy leisure - the necessity of charity accepts just work.” (Saint Augustine of Hippo – died AD 430)

2186 Those Christians who have leisure should be mindful of their brethren who have the same needs and the same rights, yet cannot rest from work because of poverty and misery. Sunday is traditionally consecrated by Christian piety to good works and humble service of the sick, the infirm, and the elderly. Christians will also sanctify Sunday by devoting time and care to their families and relatives, often difficult to do on other days of the week. Sunday is a time for reflection, silence, cultivation of the mind, and meditation which furthers the growth of the Christian interior life.

So, we see that not only is Sunday a day for worship of God, but also a day for families to enjoy the day together and for all of us to rest and to care for those in need.
