November/December Newsletter 2016 Dear members,September and October have been warm and sunny generally so we have been able to garden and have outdoor games and we were very lucky in having good weather for our trips. We have been making lots of pictures about Brazil and Japan, along with making music, designing clothes and learning about the customs of these countries. We had a week of cooking Brazilian lunches and a week of cooking Japanese influenced lunches, I think we all ate very well! Our trip to Country life was eventful (see Cathy’s notes) and we enjoyed the trips to Exeter Museum. Members are getting used to travelling by public bus in small groups, along with quite a bit of walking! We finished October with a bump and scream – our Halloween party! - where members were suitably ‘scarily’ dressed, strung up marshmallows were consumed and some strange and wonderful costumes and dances were to be seen. We have had lots of birthdays in September and October, so we are getting very good at making and consuming lots of cakes. We have a new volunteer called Sandra, who helps on a Wednesday, we hope she will enjoy working with us.Cathy’s notes:We had an outing to Country life, we all went on the bus and when we got to Exmouth we missed the connecting bus by one minute so we had to get 7 taxis to get us all to County life! We saw lots of farm animals and watched a falconry display with a big Bald Eagle. At the museum we had things to find in the displays, we all liked the stuffed animals especially the giraffe. This month I cooked a special meal for Jamie and Brian, I cooked meatballs and spaghetti. I had to buy all the ingredients and with a bit of help made all the food myself.Rachael’s Festive jokes:What did Father Christmas say to his wife? – “Is that snow?” she replied “No it’s rein…dear!”What does a snowman have to drink at parties? – A snowball! What did one snowman say to the other snowman whose carrot nose dropped off? – “That’s snow joke!”The suitably predictable theme for November/ December is festive in nature and in keeping with our exploration of other countries we will focus on: ‘Lapland, land of snow, home of reindeer and a certain red suited cheery fellow and his helpers, so I’m told!As the pumpkins and bats come down, up will go the robins, sleighs and baubles. We will be making a range of Christmas things to be given as gifts and to develop new skills in artworks, printing, objects and in cooking. We will be doing the following:Finding out all about the culture and customs of Lapland in Finland.Exploring how snow occurs, looking at traditional snow scenes, ice crystals and our weather over the next two months.Finding out about our Christmas traditions and popular customs along with making music and singing along to old and new Christmas songs.Making a range of festive cards and gifts, and yes, we will be making Christmas cakes again!Learning how to make a deliciously healthy and freshly made Christmas lunch.Generally we are getting gradually more festive as the weeks head towards Christmas and practicing to perform Debbie’s Christmas play.
