Let the librarian know if you have to leave the room. The bathrooms + water fountain are just outside the roomClass InfoDescribe activities / objectives Do Ink: paid app (not pre-installed on your iPad (purchase from App Store)We are not experts, but we know the basics. Feel free to share what you know / learn as we goWe are all learning so feel free to ask questions of the librarian and fellow studentsHands-on class, learn by doing, some things will be easy, some will be harder; if you find something easy and see another group struggling, offer to help; if you’re finding something challenging or have a question, please ask so we can work through itWe’ll showcase some projects at the end; there is no pressure to share with the groupQuestions are welcome, but may sometimes need to be “parked” so we can get through activities. Will be addressed at end[Click here to enter any other points to cover in the Intro.]Talking Points, Topics, and Activities (112 mins)As participants are arriving have a green screen how to video from YouTube playing on mute on the big screenIntro to Green Screen(5-8mins)What is green screen?Ask for examples of green screen:Stunts in moviesWeather reports on TV Also called chroma keySoftware analyzes the pixels and makes all pixels of a certain colour transparentMore detailed explanation available from )Can also be blue screen Ask: Why these colours? Why couldn’t we use a red screen or a brown screen?Human skin doesn’t contain blue or green tones so people don’t vanish when the effect is applied. Ask: What happens if you’re wearing green clothes?Answer (they will become transparent) or play clip: (from Anchorman 2) In this example, the foreground image (Steven Carrell) and the background image (the weather map are combined to form a single image. This is called compositingAsk: What kinds of visual tricks can you play using compositing? (Note: Do not skip this step; some participants may find the concept of compositing tricky.)Example answers: You can pretend to be in a different part of the world; you can pretend to be flying or doing other stuntsOptional: show clip from Tatiana Subbotina’s YouTube channel (Grandma with a Green Screen) channel and ask participants what two images are being composited. OPTIONAL:Ask: When doing green screening, we want to minimize shadows. Why do you think this is important? With shadows, the green screen takes on two colours: the original colour and the shadow colour and the chroma key software might not remove both if the contrast between them is too highNote: If the lights are too bright, the green will “spill” onto the subject in the foreground or create washed out areas on the screen. Diffuse light works well. Roll down the green screen and ask participants if they think we need to adjust the lighting in the room. (We shouldn’t need to.)Steps to filming a project, Part 1 (demo’ed live)We are going to film a video of a knock knock joke. We have two people on our team and both want to be videographers; we also both want to be in the film. What can we do? Let’s break it down:1: Knock knock2: Who’s there?1: Canoe.2: Canoe who?1: Canoe help me make this movie? Use transparencies to explain layers and compositingGet participants to help work out how to organize the shoot:Where should each participant stand? What happens if both stand in the centre of the shot? Possible suggestion: One person should stand on the left of the screen, the other on the right. Each should stand as though they are facing each other. How can we make the timing of the joke work? Elicit suggestions. You can mentally say the other person’s part in your head slowly to make sure you leave enough space for their speaking parts. One staff member videos the second (foreground)Have the first staff member video the second staff member (middle layer)Either film video of a suitable background image in The Lab or demonstrate how to legally download video footage that can be repurposed (Try ) (background) Plan your projectThe challenge today is to create a short (1-2 minute, this can be flexible, just be mindful that all groups need to use the green screen individually to shoot their footage) video Project ideas (I recommend having everyone in the class work on the same idea)Be your own twinsMovie with a ghostWinter scene video Christmas cardTime travelUnderwater (bring bubbles!)Invisibility (need to use the Chroma Key blanket)The app we’re using is called Do Ink Ask: Has anyone here used Do Ink before? This app allows you to shoot video footage on an iPad or iPhone via the camera app for use in your project. So we don’t need to have a separate camera for today’s projects. Each group will be given an iPad to work withDo Ink can accommodate up to three layers of imagesYou’ll need to plan Your project components: foreground action, background scene, photo still (optional) Give participants whiteboard markers so they can draw out their compositing and plan their shot. For example (Display this image on the monitors):(Image source: )Who in your group will do what jobHow you’ll create your effects (ex. Identical twins)If you want your video to have a story, what that story isProps? When you’re ready to shoot your video, let us know; when we change the lightboard lights to BLUE it means someone is filming and you’ll need to use quiet voices (whispers) so they can get good sound with their footageShoot video Groups take turns shooting their video footage using the Camera appEdit video DemoOpen Do Ink app+ button in right corner to start working on a new project; tap Create a New ProjectThe program will need access to the Microphone, Camera, and PhotosThe bottom three lines represent the three channels of the Timeline. The top channel is the foreground of your image; the bottom channel is the background. Order is important when putting your project components on the timeline. The video taken against the green screen must be higher up the timeline than the background.Walk participants through the rest of the interface:Source Selector: Choose video (moving) or image (still) to access your camera rollPreview View: Allows you to see what your project will look likeSource View: Allows you to see what a single image / video contributes to the whole of the projectSettings Panel: Allows you to adjust the chroma key, if neededToolbar: Use for cropping and maskingDemo masking on a still imageGroups work together to edit their projectsWrap Up/ClosingAsk groups if they’d like to share their projects with the whole groupAsk groups one thing they liked/learned todayAsk groups a project they’d like to do next time they use the green screen ................
