Narrative Writing Notes and Spooky Story

What is a narrative?

• Telling a personal story.

• May be a favorite memory, time you learned an important lesson, etc.

• Told in chronological order: there is a beginning, middle, and end to the story.

What are the parts of a narrative?

• You must include the following in your personal narrative:

– Plot: Beginning, middle, end to your story

– 1st Person: Told in first person point of view (I, we, my, us)

– Characters

– Conflict: need to have rising action events building suspense to the climax.

– Resolution/Conclusion: How does the story end? Did you learn something?

– Dialogue: Characters speaking to one another.

– Descriptions: sights, sounds, tastes, smells, feelings. Show don’t tell!

– Sentence Structure: vary sentence lengths and use advanced vocabulary.

What is dialogue?

A conversation between two or more people in a drama or narrative. When quoting dialogue, put the words of each speaker inside quotation marks, and indicate changes in speaker by starting a new paragraph.

I touched his face. "Look, I love you more than anything else in the world combined. Isn't that enough?"

"Yes, it is enough," he answered, smiling. "Enough for forever."

And he leaned down to press his cold lips once more to my throat.

How do you show and not tell?

• Don’t tell the reader your character is scared. Show it! Describe what the character looks like, describe their actions. Show their fear!

• Ex: She was as white as a ghost. Her hands trembling.

• Don’t tell me the house is creepy. Show me! Describe the house. What does it look like? What does it sound like? What does it smell like? What does it feel like?

• Ex: The old house sat on the top of lookout hill covered in shadows. There was a large iron clad gate covered in tree branches and vines. The gate creaked loudly as we entered.
