Mission director assesses UM aid as 2013 tornado recovery continues

By JEREMY BASSET Director, Office of Mission

The first anniversary of the May 2013 tornadoes in central Oklahoma gives us an opportunity to reflect on the recovery work that has begun and what still lies ahead. Twelve months ago saw an immediate and significant response from aid agencies around the nation. More than 50 organizations responded to the rescue, recovery, and rebuild tasks. Today, nine agencies remain involved in the construction and volunteer efforts; United Methodists count among those continuing to serve. Government officials have stated that full recovery will take at least two years.

Donations of $1.25 million

The Oklahoma Conference (OKUMC) and the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference (OIMC) have worked together on recovery efforts. They report receiving a total of $1,246,353 in direct donations over the past year.

A joint committee was established to authorize expenditures of this money. That committee has representatives from both conferences, under the leadership of Bishop Robert Hayes Jr.

This total represents $1,028,523 from churches, $171,265 from individuals, $35,131 from businesses, and $11,434 from church organizations such as youth and women's groups. The amount does not include contributions made through UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief.

As of April 29, almost $100,000 had been

spent, with the balance to be spent as outlined in this story.

The value of collaboration

Oklahoma United Methodists are part of a highly unusual cooperative effort by five major religious and secular aid agencies. Formed because of the May 2013 storm disasters, this collaboration is called the Oklahoma Disaster Recovery Project.

The Project unites, but is not limited to, the work of the American Red Cross, the Oklahoma United Methodist Church, Catholic Charities, the Salvation Army, and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

The Project oversees case management, volunteer management, and construction project management for the repair and rebuild needs spawned by the storms in central Oklahoma.

The OKUMC and OIMC have received very generous grants from the Red Cross and the United Way of Central Oklahoma to fund our overhead costs in this collaboration.

? We received a two-year Red Cross grant of $1,168,285 for the case-management work. The process of case management seeks to connect various sources of help for affected families and individuals in a one-on-one approach. The United Methodist Church is recognized nationally for exceptional success in this field.

? The Red Cross also awarded us a grant of $1,864,970 for volunteer and construction project management. Rebuilding is most helpful when deployment of the work is organized. When volunteers can go where they are most needed, their skills and efforts have the greatest impact for good. The UM

? 30,000 volunteer hours

? Valuable partnerships

Volunteers In Mission ministry is highly regarded for such work.

? United Way gave us a grant of $766,000 for purchases of tools and construction supplies and for warehousing.

These financial resources in hand are managed through the OKUMC Treasurer's Office and subject to fiscal accountability and auditing processes. The grantors also receive audited reports on the use of their monies.

Tracking the numbers

As of April 29, through our shared work in case management, we have helped meet needs in 3,258 cases for families/individuals impacted by the storms. Of that total, 1,589 cases were completed, 1,107 were open, and 562 were pending as of that date.

In the area of volunteer management, we report approximately 2,300 volunteers have deployed through three volunteer reception centers. Those volunteers have given in excess of 30,000 volunteer hours to the recovery work. The centers are in Moore, El Reno, and Shawnee, and are staffed by United Methodist coordinators.

These statistics are from Federal Emergency Management Agency and Red Cross reports.

Adding these numbers to those reported by six other agencies involved in the volunteer management, the Oklahoma Disaster

SPECIAL INTEREST STUDY

The Church and People with Disabilities

The Women's Home Missionary Society could not have imagined how its plan to offer a school of Christian mission in the early 1900s would blossom into the premier mission education event for the denomination. Many people associate Mission u, formerly the Cooperative School of Christian Mission, with United Methodist Women. Dean Derrek Belase declares its value is much broader. "Mission u is for everyone. It is not limited to members of UMW. It is a great place to interact with others who have their eyes on the missional outreach of the Church," said Rev. Belase. In the Oklahoma Conference, Mission U is cosponsored by the United Methodist Women and the Mission & Service Ministry Team.

RELEVANT ISSUES

Participants grow in understanding the mission of the Church in the current world context.

Earl Mitchell became involved in the early 1970s, "when the issue of South Africa was high on everyone's agenda. In 1968 the UMW removed its funds from Chase Manhattan Bank because of the U.S. and its banks supporting South Africa and its apartheid system."

Just a few years later, a timely mission study covered this important topic. Dr. Mitchell was tapped to lead it.

He recalled many church members were unaware of the need for the Church to become involved in this issue.

"This was quite an eye-opener," he said. "After studying `Nations of Southern Africa,' the students in my course were ready to get to work and support the Church's involvement."

This cutting-edge relevance continues. One year after an earthquake devastated Haiti, students were learning about that country. When immigration topped daily news, a course was developed about immigration in the Bible.

Trina Bose-North, also a longtime Oklahoma study leader, said, "Mission u has a long history of offering quality courses to deepen our spirituality and our understanding of ourselves in God's world."

When you come to Mission u, be prepared to engage in challenging topics. According to Rev. Bose-North, "It is a pleasure to teach at Mission

Hands-on mission projects are a part of the Mission u experience. See page 7 for this year's project.

u because the people who attend come ready to learn and be pushed. The level of openness and engagement is so refreshing."

This year, studies focus on the Church and people with disabilities, the Roma people of Europe, and a question: How is it with your soul?

LIVES CHANGED

Mission u participants find their lives changed in many ways.

In a 2011 Contact interview, Anne Marie Boyce reflected on her time as a student before her twoyear stint as school dean. "God has used the School of Mission to feed my interest in missions and to prepare me as a VIM Team Leader. I have been attending for 20-some years and wouldn't miss it!"

Bose-North said, "In 2005, I first taught the India/Pakistan study. I jumped at the opportunity because my family is from India. I learned so much from the study and people in the classes that I have said yes to teaching on the Sudan, Haiti, and the Roma of Europe." She returns this year as study leader for the geographic topic.

Jeanne Hathcock, a member of Good Shepherd UMC, Yukon, enrolls in the geographic studies.

"Learning and sharing in a nonjudgmental way gives me the freedom and desire to share more with others. Understanding the issues and human needs that span our globe empowers me to make choices that will make a positive difference in the world," Hathcock said.

Worship is an important part of the Mission u experience.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Mission u is for all people. There are classes for youth and children. Scholarships are available for them, and for adults attending the first time.

Full participation in the weekend session counts as advanced lay speaker training. Pastors can earn Continuing Education Units.

The word "school" has been dropped from the name, but education for mission remains at the heart of Mission u. Participants engage via classroom study, enrichment sessions, plenary speakers, and beautiful worship.

HOW IS IT WITH YOUR SOUL?

This year's spiritual growth study is for anyone interested in deepening their spirituality and engagement in mission. Framed within four verbs ? "pray," "learn," "mentor" and "transform" ? the study gives an overview of the setting for the main question, "How is it with your soul?" This question was a prime one in Methodist class and band meetings, and moves in a trajectory from the individual to the church to the world. Within this framework, the study seeks to discuss biblical texts, Wesley and the early Methodists, faithful women past and present, and spiritual practices.

REV. CHARLA GWARTNEY

In 16 years of vocational ministry, Charla has served five congregations. Three have been distinctly urban and two have been in suburban settings. Different settings have helped her develop a passion for relationships, spiritual growth and leadership development. Currently, she is serving as the pastor for Memorial Drive UMC in Tulsa, Okla. Charla has been in spiritual direction for thirteen years. This

experience has taught her the importance of intentionally asking the question, "How is it with your soul?" Charla believes that nothing could strengthen the church more than teaching believers how to become disciples through spiritual formation. Teaching at Mission u has been a long-time dream of hers and she is excited to drink from the well of living water with each of the participants.

DEACONESS JERRIE LINDSEY

Jerrie, a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, has been a member of UM Women since age 19 while in college at the University of Oklahoma. After completing her degree in Medical Technology she worked in the laboratory of the hospital in Broken Arrow for five years before she and her husband began their family. During the years of raising her family she was a UMW member in Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico and served in several offices including president, treasurer, and district president. In 2010 Jerrie helped to start a Christian club in her town's high school. The SWAM (Students With A Mission) Club, is open to all high school students and emphasizes the

possibility of the students choosing "missionary" as their vocation as well as being missionaries as they live their daily lives in high school.

Jerrie responded to a renewed feeling of a calling to service as a Deaconess in 2011 and was recently consecrated at the UMW Assembly in Louisville, Kentucky.

REV. SUSAN SOUTHALL

Susan is an Elder in the Oklahoma Annual Conference and is currently serving as the Minister of Discipleship at EnidFirst UMC. Susan worked 19 years for Shell Oil Company before answering the call into ministry. Her first appointment was in Oklahoma City where she was the Minister of Care for Church of the Servant. Throughout her ministry she has led a number of retreats as well as teaching on the Bible and Spiritual Disciplines. She is currently attending the Two Year Academy for Spiritual Formation. Susan states, "I am very excited about this study's focus on the work of the soul. It is at the very heart of a devoted Christian life. I look forward to growing in faith with each participant in this summer's Mission u!"

THE CHURCH AND PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

The new issue study is designed to increase awareness of issues around disability awareness by discussing attitudinal and architectural barriers encountered by individuals with disabilities. The study covers ways to enhance full participation of persons with vision and hearing loss as well as people with mobility loss as well as helping participants engage in advocacy to help the church become more welcoming and accessible to those with disabilities. The church is incomplete unless the gifts of all are nurtured and put to use.

REV. ROSE MARIE LEROY

Rose Marie is an ordained minister in the Oklahoma Conference. She feels that God has blessed her call to the ministry for many years, and she has worn many hats. After undergraduate school at the University of Pittsburgh, she experienced a "hit you over the head" call to the hospital chaplaincy. Saying "yes" reluctantly, she began a journey which took her from Pennsylvania to Oklahoma.

After working as a hospital chaplain for five years, and Rose Marie attended Oklahoma State University, where she completed her master's degree in marriage and family therapy.

While in part-time practice, she also worked for the local hospice as chaplain and various other roles. In 2000, her husband says she had a "millennial" crisis and accepted a call to pastoral ministry in the United Methodist Church.

ANNETTE LOOS

Annette Loos has been a member of the UM Women since 2000 and has served as an officer at the local, district, and conference levels. She is currently working on her Doctorate of Education in Leadership from Creighton University and will graduate December 2014. Annette has worked with people with disabilities for the last 20 years. Her daughter Katie is mildly intellectually disabled and her future son-in-law Nick has cerebral palsy. Annette has been an advocate for the rights of adults with disabilities to obtain employment, housing, and the opportunity to have as normal a life as possible. Annette currently is working with the Ms. Abilities America program to promote the leadership and confidence of women with disabilities.

THE ROMA OF EUROPE

The Roma are often called "gypsies" by others. Many people who live in the U.S. know little or nothing about the Roma. In Europe, and especially in Eastern Europe, it is a different story; the Roma are the single largest minority group. They deserve our attention. This study will introduce us to the Roma, with an emphasis on Eastern Europe.

REV. TRINA BOSE NORTH

Trina is a lifelong United Methodist, growing up in San Diego First UMC. She came to Oklahoma to attend Oklahoma City University, as a religion major with a minor in women's studies. Trina went to Candler School of Theology for seminary. Since returning to Oklahoma, she has served two churches (Leonard UMC and Cashion UMC) and worked for the Volunteers In Mission office. Trina was ordained an elder in 2008 and is currently on personal leave. She is married to Dr. Justin North and the proud mother of two young children, Carter and Maya. This is Trina's fourth time teaching the geography study at the Cooperative School of Christian Mission.

Children's Leader LUISA MEDINA

Luisa is a graduate of Oklahoma City University. She works as the Associate Children's Director and Mission Coordinator for New Hope UMC in OKC. Luisa enjoys and has a passion for working with children and helping them to develop and grow in their

faith. Luisa also has a passion for mission. She started doing mission work at the age of 12 and has not stopped since. In her opinion, teaching children at a young age that there is always a way to be a "good neighbor" to everyone is the best job ever! Luisa taught the children's class at Mission U last summer, 2013, and is so excited to have the opportunity to teach again this summer!
