The Fourth Sunday after Pentecost

God is the source of our nourishment. Our Lord’s invitation to “take and eat . . . take and drink” is a repeated one. In the holy eucharist, in the word read and proclaimed, in the assembly of the people of God, the dominion of God has come near. Rejoice! Your name is written in heaven.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Please stand as you are able.

Confession and Forgiveness

All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

P Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God,

who forgives all our sin,

whose mercy endures forever.

C Amen.

P Seeking reconciliation with God and neighbor,

let us remember the gift of baptism and confess our sin.

Silence is kept for reflection and self-examination.

P God of mercy,

C we confess that we have sinned against you,

against one another,

and against the earth entrusted to our care.

We are worried and distracted by many things,

and we fail to love you above all else.

We store up treasures for ourselves

and turn away from our neighbors in need.

Forgive us, that we may live in the freedom of your Son,

Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

P When we were laid low by sin and guilt,

God made us alive with Christ,

forgiving us ☩ all our trespasses

by taking our sins onto the cross.

For freedom Christ has set us free:

Rejoice in this good news!

C Amen.

Written as a meditation on Lamentations 3:22– 23, this text is one of the few hymns among the

1200 poems by this Methodist writer and pastor that has gained much currency. The tune that appears here was composed especially for these words, and the pairing has proved enduring.

CHILDREN’S SERMON

WORD – “God speaks to us in Scripture reading, preaching and song.”

Those who returned from the exile found that the hopes for the glorious restoration of Judah

were not completely fulfilled. For these disappointed people, the prophet envisions salvation

in the image of a nursing woman. Mother Jerusalem and a mothering God remind the community

how they are sustained and supported.

FIRST READING: Isaiah 66:10-14

10Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her,

 all you who love her;

rejoice with her in joy,

 all you who mourn over her— >

11that you may nurse and be satisfied

 from her consoling breast;

that you may drink deeply with delight

 from her glorious bosom.

12For thus says the Lord:

I will extend prosperity to her like a river,

 and the wealth of the nations like an overflowing stream;

and you shall nurse and be carried on her arm,

 and dandled on her knees.

13As a mother comforts her child,

 so I will comfort you;

 you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.

14You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice;

 your bodies shall flourish like the grass;

and it shall be known that the hand of the Lord is with his servants,

 and his indignation is against his enemies.

L The word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

PSALM: Psalm 66:1-9

Refrain: (Sung once by the soloist, then repeated by the congregation and sung where indicated by R.)

1Be joyful in God, all you lands;

be joyful, all the earth.

2Sing the glory of God’s name;

sing the glory of God’s praise.

3Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!

Because of your great strength your enemies cringe before you.

4All the earth bows down before you,

sings to you, sings out your name.”  R

5Come now and see the works of God,

how awesome are God’s deeds toward all people.

6God turned the sea into dry land, so that they went through the water on foot,

and there we rejoiced in God.

7Ruling forever in might, God keeps watch over the nations;

let no rebels exalt themselves.

8Bless our God, you peoples;

let the sound of praise be heard.

9Our God has kept us among the living

and has not allowed our feet to slip.  R

In the close of his letter to the Galatians, Paul encourages them to live as people made right with God through faith in Jesus Christ. Here Paul offers practical advice about how believers exercise

common concern for one other in “the family of faith.”

SECOND READING: Galatians 6:[1-6] 7-16

[1My friends, if anyone is detected in a transgression, you who have received the Spirit should restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness. Take care that you yourselves are not tempted. 2Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3For if those who are nothing think they are something, they deceive themselves. 4All must test their own work; then that work, rather than their neighbor’s work, will become a cause for pride. 5For all must carry their own loads.

  6Those who are taught the word must share in all good things with their teacher.]

  7Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. 8If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. 9So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up. 10So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith.

  11See what large letters I make when I am writing in my own hand! 12It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that try to compel you to be circumcised—only that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. 13Even the circumcised do not themselves obey the law, but they want you to be circumcised so that they may boast about your flesh. 14May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15For neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is anything; but a new creation is everything! 16As for those who will follow this rule—peace be upon them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.

L The word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

Please stand as you are able.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the tenth chapter.

C Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus commissions harvesters and laborers to go where he would go and do what he would do.

Risking hardship and danger in exchange for the experience of great joy,

they offer peace and healing as signs that the reign of God is near.

GOSPEL: Luke 10:1-11, 16-20

1After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs into every town and place where he himself intended going. 2Jesus said, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 3Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. 4Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. 5Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house!’ 6And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. 7Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the laborer deserves being paid. Do not move about from house to house. 8Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; 9cure the sick who are there, and say, ‘The kingdom of God has come near.’ 10But whenever you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, 11‘Even the dust of your town that clings onto our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near.’ ”

  16“Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”

  17The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!” 18He said, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. 19See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. 20Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

SERMON Pastor Coleman

Please stand as you are able.

Text for this hymn is the work of a prolific Silesian cleric who suffered much during the Thirty Years War, both from his own ill health and from the dangers of surrounding enemies.

The hymn tune, whose source is uncertain, has long been associated with the present text.

HYMN OF THE DAY LBW 380

>

Luther Memorial’s children are invited forward to witness the baptism.

SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM

P In Holy Baptism our gracious heavenly Father liberates us from sin and death by joining us into the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen humanity; in the waters of Baptism we are reborn children of God and inheritors of eternal life. By water and the Holy Spirit we are made members of the Church which is the body of Christ. As we live with him and with his people, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God.

A sponsor presents the candidate with these words:

R We present Adam José Duran to receive the Sacrament of Holy Baptism.

P In Christian love you have presented Adam for Holy Baptism. You should, therefore, faithfully bring him into the services of God's house, and teach him the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments. As he grows in years, you should place in his hands the Holy Scriptures and provide for his instruction in the Christian faith, that, living in the promise of his Baptism and in communion with the Church, he may lead a godly life until the day of Jesus Christ.

Do you promise to fulfill these obligations?

R We do.

THE PRAYERS 1 Timothy 2:1

A Joining our voices with God’s people around the world, let us offer our prayers for those in need.

A brief silence.

A For the church and its ministries; for pastors and musicians; for teachers and leaders, that their joyful noise clearly announce your reign of peace come near, let us pray.

C Have mercy, O God.

A For peace and justice in the world; for this nation and for the freedom we have to worship our Lord today; for all levels of government; for areas affected by strife, that those in authority always work for the good of all, bringing your justice to all people, let us pray.

C Have mercy, O God.

A For the sick and those who console them; for prisoners and those who show them mercy; for the downtrodden and those who help them flourish; for those suffering from mental illness; and for all in need of care, especially family members that suffer, those names on our prayer list, and those names we offer to you now…… that you comfort them as a mother comforts her child, let us pray.

C Have mercy, O God.

A For those spending time with friends and family this summer; for those making employment decisions; for those uncertain what the future holds, that they set their minds on Christ who has called us to himself, let us pray.

C Have mercy, O God.

A Come, Holy Spirit. Send those looking for a faith community into this congregation and when they come, move us to walk with them. Allow us to preach your Gospel and share your sacraments of bread and wine and the water of baptism, let us pray.

C Have mercy, O God.

Here other intercessions may be offered.

A In thanksgiving for the faithful departed who have inspired us by their witness to the gospel, especially John D. Mumford, III, and that with them we will know the confidence of being held in your embrace. We also hold in memory and love this day the Shaner, Hirt and McAfee families as they have and continue to put their trust in you, let us pray.

C Have mercy, O God.

P Holy God, mighty Lord, gracious Father: We give you thanks, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and you created heaven and earth. By the gift of water you nourish and sustain us and all living things.

By the waters of the flood you judged the wicked and saved those whom you had chosen, Noah and his family. You led Israel by the pillar of cloud and fire through the sea, out of slavery into the freedom of the promised land. In the waters of the Jordan your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Spirit. By the baptism of his own death and resurrection your beloved Son has set us free from the bondage of sin and death, and has opened the way into the joy and freedom of everlasting life. He made water a sign of the kingdom and of cleansing and rebirth. In obedience, we make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Pour out your Holy Spirit, so that she who is here baptized may be given new life. Wash away the sin of Adam who is cleansed by this water and bring him forth as an inheritor of your glorious kingdom. >

To you be given praise and honor and worship through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever.

C Amen.

The minister addresses the baptismal group and the congregation.

P I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the Church, the faith in which we baptize.

P Do you renounce all the forces of evil, the devil, and all his empty promises?

C I do.

C I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

and born of the virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

P Adam José, I baptize you in the name of the Father,

and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

P God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we give you thanks for freeing your sons and daughters from the power of sin and for raising them up into a new life through this holy sacrament. Pour your Holy Spirit upon Adam José: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence.

C Amen.

The minister marks the sign of the cross on the forehead of the baptized.

P Adam José, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever.

The sponsor responds: "Amen." A lighted candle is given to the sponsor of the baptized.

P Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. >

P O God, the giver of all life, look with kindness upon the father and mother of this child. Let them ever rejoice in the gift you have given them. Make them teachers and examples of righteousness for their child. Strengthen them in their own Baptism so they may share eternally with their child the salvation you have given them, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

C Amen.

Please Stand as you are able.

P Through Baptism God has made this child a member of the priesthood we all share in Christ Jesus, that we may proclaim the praise of God and bear his creative and redeeming Word for all the world.

C We welcome you into the Lord's family. We receive you as a fellow member of the body of Christ, a child of the same heavenly Father, and a worker with us in the kingdom of God.

P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C And also with you. Romans 16:16

GREAT THANKSGIVING Matthew 21:9

P It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and ever living God; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so with the Church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

>

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

P Holy, living, and loving God,

we praise you for creating the heavens and the earth.

We bless you for bringing Noah and his family through the waters of the flood,

for freeing your people Israel from the bonds of slavery,

and for sending your Son as our Redeemer.

We give you thanks for Jesus

who, living among us, healed the sick,

fed the hungry, and with a love stronger than death,

gave his life for others.

In the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;

broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,

and gave it for all to drink, saying:

This cup is the new covenant in my blood,

shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

Remembering, therefore,

his life-giving death and glorious resurrection,

we await your promised life for all this dying world.

Breathe your Spirit on us and on this bread and cup:

carry us in your arms from death into life,

that we may live as your chosen ones,

clothed in the righteousness of Christ.

Through him all glory and honor is yours,

Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit,

in your holy Church,

both now and forever.

C Amen. >

C Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,

forever and ever. Amen. Matthew 6:9

AGNUS DEI

Invitation to Communion

P Those who follow Jesus know him in the breaking of the bread.

Approach his table where you are known and loved.

C Amen.

The congregation is seated.

Today's service is a celebration of Holy Communion.  We believe that Jesus Christ

is truly present in the gifts of bread and wine, bringing forgiveness of sins and new life

to all who receive this sacrament.  All baptized Christians who come at our

Lord's invitation are welcome at His table of grace.

Please come forward by the center aisle. The distribution of the elements is by

the method of intinction (dipping). Receive the bread and dip it into the chalice (cup).

Wine is in the metal chalice. Grape juice, for those who prefer it, is in the earthenware

chalice. Return to your place by the side aisle.

If you are not going to receive Holy Communion, but would like to receive a blessing,

please come forward with your arms crossed over your chest.

COMMUNION John 1:29

Originally called Harvest Hymn, this text is much more comprehensive than that title implies.

It also deals with stewardship, thanksgiving, and God’s endless gifts that continue to astound us.

It is set to a familiar Welsh tune whose name means "throughout the night.”

BLESSING

P The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace.

C Amen.

Care Ministers please come forward to the altar during the singing of the Post-Communion Canticle.

Text for this hymn originated in a German hymn of the early 19th century. The text we sing is the work

of two different Harvard Divinity School students. The tune is set to patriotic texts in Great Britain

(where it is the national anthem), the United States, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, France and Russia.

It has also been taken as a theme by many classical composers.

POST-COMMUNION CANTICLE LBW 569

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

A O God, in this holy communion

you have welcomed us into your presence,

nourished us with words of mercy, and fed us at your table.

Amid the cares of this life,

strengthen us to love you with all our heart,

serve our neighbors with a willing spirit,

and honor the earth you have made;

through Christ our Lord.

C Amen.

SENDING – “God blesses us and sends us in mission to the world.”

SENDING OF COMMUNION CARE MINISTERS

P O God of tender compassion,

as you healed the sick and welcomed the stranger,

bless those who leave this assembly and share the gifts

of this table with our sisters and brothers who are sick and homebound.

May they be sustained by the love and prayers of this faith community,

and by the Bread of life that satisfies all hunger, Jesus Christ our Lord.

C Amen.

Blessing Numbers 6:24-26

P Live your lives in Christ, rooted and built up in him,

and abound in thanksgiving;

and the blessing of the holy Trinity, ☩ one God,

be upon you and remain with you forever.

C Amen.

This celebrated text was inspired by the author's trip to Pike's Peak. She was a decorated member

of the Wellesley College faculty. The tune was written for a different text but later paired

with the present one, both becoming quite popular during World War I.

Go to the SERVERIE website to register ASAP. This is one of the best organizations to help in Erie. Registration is easy by going to . It's well planned and all the equipment you need is provided.

So the 2019 School Initiative event will be held at JoAnna Connell Elementary School from July 25-27 to paint, clean, and more! You can register for full day, all the days, or just a morning and an afternoon.

Let's step up LM.

National Night Out will be held Tuesday, August 6 at Gridley Park from 5:00-8:00pm. Over one thousand community members gather to enjoy live music, free food, children’s games, activities, and information provided by community agencies. Bring your neighbors and friends and join us.

Pastor Coleman is looking for volunteers to participate in the West Bayfront Summer Event on Wednesday, August 14 from 6:00 – 8:00pm at Bayview Park (2nd and Cherry).  The volunteers would help 30 to 40 kids make crafts.  The craft idea would come from the volunteers.  Please talk to Pastor Coleman if you are interested and he will give you more details, or indicate on the Sunday Insert forms that you are interested in helping.

Opportunities to Give and Help

Donations will be accepted through Sunday, August 25 and mailed in September.
