English Language and English Literature IGCSE CIE

All pupils entering the 4th Form begin a two year course in IGCSE English Language and Literature. The Cambridge IGCSE enables us to personalise a course according to our students’ individualised needs; as such, the Department’s approach varies from student to student, and set to set, year on year.

Characteristics Common Across the Sets

• Examinations: All students will be entered to sit the English Language and Literature IGCSE at the end of their 5th form, put forward, in the first instance, at the Higher Tier (A*-E). Candidates in need of greater support can, at the discretion of the Department, be entered for solely the English Language IGCSE or be entered at the Foundation Tier (C-G).

• Coursework: Coursework is a key element, endowing the students with writing and working skills befitting future study at A-Level, as well as targeting core skills such as independent working, time management, and personal organisation.

• English Language: The Language course covers Summary and Directed Writing; Composition Skills; Evaluation of Literary Devices; Argumentative, Discursive, and Descriptive Writing.

• English Literature: Students will learn how to appreciate how writers achieve their effects, and be able to place Literature within its contexts, creating and sustaining informed personal arguments.

Programme of Study: Approach

As close to a 50:50 combination of exam and CWK assessment is generically used to spread assessment over the two years of study. Alterations to this proportion are at the discretion of the teacher of the set.
