Bernard J. Lachner ScholarshipRecipient: Esther A. Olsen Esther grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, and she graduated from Brigham Young University in Middle East Studies/Arabic in 2012. After graduation, Esther moved to Cairo, Egypt for a year and worked in a pediatric clinic there. While working in the clinic, Esther developed a passion for public health and health administration. As a dual MHA/MPH student at Ohio State, Esther is interested in health policy, population health, and international health. She completed her summer residency at Leavitt Partners in Salt Lake City. Mr. Cleverley consults with hospital and healthcare organizations to identify financial and operating opportunities, as well as related strategies for performance improvement. Prior to joining the firm, he directed a statewide health services program.Mr. Cleverley has authored over fifty books and articles dealing with healthcare financial analysis and application, including the annual Community Value Index? hospital survey, The State of the Hospital Industry, and The Essentials of Health Care Finance. He is a two‐time recipient of the Healthcare Financial Management Association’s Yerger/Seawell Best Article award.Mr. Cleverley received his Masters in Health Administration from The Ohio State University in 2004. He then attended West Virginia University School of Pharmacy and graduated in 1969. After graduation, he worked for Revco as a store manager and pharmacist for eight years.Jim then attended The Ohio State University and graduated from the MHA program in 1979. Jim has served as the President of the Rehab Center since 2004. His prior healthcare roles include Chief Operating Officer of Medical Center in Chillicothe, Ohio; President of Jamestown General Hospital, Jamestown, New York; President of Allen Memorial Hospital in Oberlin, Ohio; and President of Emergicare in Erie, Pennsylvania.Jim has received numerous awards including Jaycee of the Year (1983), Chillicothe, Ohio, Ross County Citizen of the Year (1986), Oberlin School Board Association Award of Achievement and the HSMP Alumni Society Service Award (2017). Jim has been active in his community for more than 40 years. He served as the Jayce Treasurer (1974-1984), president of the Y Board in Chillicothe, Rotarian (1985-present) Oberlin Civil Service member (1989-2000), Oberlin Economic Development Committee (1990-2000) and president (1992-1996), Oberlin School Board (1993-2000), Ohio Hospital Association Board of Directors (1996 – 2000), Leadership Unlimited (2006), VNA Board of Directors (2007 to present), President of Alliance of Ohio Work Centers (2006-2008) and HSMP Alumni Society Treasurer (2014-2017).His accomplishments also include presenting at a national press conference with AHA on lab unbundling and testifying before Congress on Hospital Lab unbundlingHSMHJim and his wife currently reside in Mansfield, Ohio and have been married for 47 years. Prior to this role, he was an assistant professor at Clemson University - Department of Public Health Sciences and a Research Assistant Professor at Tulane University - Department of International Health and Development, School of Public Health.Dr. Seiber graduated from Eckerd College with a Bachelor of Science degree and a PhD in Economics from Tulane University. His honors and awards include: Fulbright Fellowship – Universidad Nacional - Bogotá, Colombia, The Ohio State University College of Public Health Excellence in Teaching Award, Clemson National Scholars Program Award of Distinction for Mentoring, Clemson University College of HEHD Award of Excellence in Teaching. Phil Harrop ’04, PhD, FACHEPhil Harrop has served as President of Saint Alphonsus Medical Center in Baker City, Oregon since January 2017. His prior healthcare roles include Executive Director of Operations at Saint Alphonsus Medical Center in Nampa, Idaho; Interim CEO of Walter Knox Memorial Hospital in Emmett, Idaho; Executive Director of John Stoddard Cancer Center in Des Moines, Iowa; and Director of Indiana University Health Goshen Center for Cancer Care in Goshen, Indiana. Phil earned a bachelor of science in business management—finance from Brigham Young University and four advanced degrees from The Ohio State University: a Master of Health Administration, a Master of Business Administration, a Master of Science, and a PhD in health services management and policy. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and was elected ACHE's Regent for Idaho for 2015-2018. He has published numerous articles on a variety of healthcare topics and has lectured on healthcare and leadership in several universities across the country. Phil currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Baker County Chamber of Commerce, the Idaho Healthcare Executive Forum Board of Directors, and the American College of Healthcare Executives Regent Assessment Committee. He is a Leadership Nampa graduate, was named to the Idaho Business Review's Accomplished Under 40 list for 2014, and served on the Nampa Mayor's Blue Ribbon Advisory Committee. Her efforts have taken the Medical Center from a $700 million organization to a $3.4 billion enterprise, adding significant central Ohio job growth (10,000+) and economic impact. She serves as President of affiliated entities that build health care relationships across Ohio and the Midwest.Improving the health of the citizens of Ohio and creating the future of medicine to improve people’s lives is central to her purpose. Gail brings a strategic, operational, and financial skill set to her work with balanced attention to strategic growth and return on investment all while advancing the critical missions of research and education. During her tenure she has spearheaded the growth of these entities including the development of the Biomedical Research Tower, Heart and Lung Research Institute, Ross Heart Hospital, James Cancer Hospital, Brain & Spine Hospital, and significant outpatient growth including Upper Arlington, Gahanna, neighborhood health clinics, and the OSU Sports Medicine Institute. She has grown the network of regional hospital partnerships to over 40 hospitals and 30 telehealth partners.Gail is widely recognized for identifying talent and advancing the careers of many individuals. She founded the Women’s Leadership Connection at OSU Wexner Medical Center which aligns professional growth opportunities with the values of the university. She was instrumental in the development of the Spirit of Women Park on the OSU campus and she is involved in the OSU Fisher College of Business MBA mentor program. In 2017 she was recognized as an Ohio State Glassbreaker and received a Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Public Health. In 2014 she joined a bi-partisan congressional Women’s Fly-in to The White House to discuss issues impacting women and minorities. In 2012 she was named a YWCA Woman of Achievement for her work in eliminating racism and empowering women. Later that same year she was named one of Ohio’s Most Powerful and Influential Women by the National Diversity Council.Gail also works with the YWCA on the Women at the Table (WATT) initiative to increase the number of women of all races serving on Ohio corporate boards. In addition, she is an active corporate member of Women for Economic and Leadership Development (WELD). Gail’s memberships have included The United Way Women’s Leadership Council, and Flying Horse Farms Magic Makers. Gail devotes time to serve on numerous boards including the board of governors for Medflight of Ohio, The Ohio State Health Network Board, and MedCare Medical headquartered in Michigan. Since 2003 she has been a member of Columbus Rotary and joined the BioMedical Steering Board of TechColumbus/Rev1 as well as the Governor’s Choose Ohio initiative.Ms. Marsh is married to Clay B. Marsh, MD, Vice President and Executive Dean of Health Sciences at West Virginia University. They have 3 children, Rachel, 24 (Ohio State College of Medicine – Med II), Cameron, 22 (Swarthmore College, PA) and Matthew, 18 (Upper Arlington High School). The family resides in Upper Arlington. Stephen F. Loebs Outstanding Leadership AwardRecipient: Christopher Coloian ‘90 Chris Coloian, is a seasoned executive with more than twenty-five years of healthcare industry experience. He has led the growth and development of new businesses, leveraging his expertise in strategy, executive management, operations, and product development. He currently is the SVP of Revenue and Growth for Verscend Technologies where he is responsible for commercialization, sales, sales operations and growth strategy.Prior to Verscend he served as Chief Solutions Officer for Welltok, a fast growth Health Technology company and was the CEO and founder of Predilytics an innovative Health Information Technology company focused on analytics and data management to inform consumer behaviors in healthcare, Predilytics was purchased by Welltok.? Prior to launching Predilytics, Mr. Coloian was a member of the leadership teams of insurer, provider, and healthcare services companies, including Health Dialog, Cigna Healthcare, and Matria Healthcare (now Alere Health).? He participated in the early stages and founding of 4 companies, the first while he was at Ohio State, the Patient Satisfaction Monitoring System.He graduated from Ohio State University with a Master’s in Health Administration, and received his Bachelor’s degree in Zoology from Miami University.
