GENERAL NEWS:

1. Mrs. Kaiser met with graduating seniors on May 5 to collect info on future plans, employment, job interviews, scholarships, etc. The meeting agenda is posted on the guidance webpage.

2. Seniors: Mrs. Kaiser needs to know the names and amounts of all scholarships you have received no later than May 8, so they can appear in the newspaper.

3. All underclassmen (grades 9-11) will update their activity sheets and should receive tentative 2015-2016 class schedules this month. Requests for changes are due to Mrs. Kaiser by June 1.

4. FRHS will be offering COLLEGE CREDIT for several courses next year (AP Lit, Eng 12, AP Bio, AP Calc, and Computer Apps)! All students (grades 8-12) were given an informational letter about applying for College Credit Plus. Interested students must submit their forms to Mrs. Kaiser ASAP.

5. If you are interested in competing in The Miss Lake Festival Scholarship Pageant (ladies age 17-24) or the Outstanding Teen Pageant (ladies age 13-17), contact Melissa Hoying at jmhoying@ or 419-733-0814.

6. Need Summer School credits? The Mercer County ESC will offer classes in Celina (in June) for students who need to make up high school credits. Cost is approximately $150 per credit.

7. Fort Recovery State Museum’s Grand Re-Opening will be Sunday, May 3 from 12-3 p.m. Some activities include:

9. Cooper Farms Fort Recovery is looking for an individual to work part time in our dispatch office.  The hours will be in the evening from 330pm-1030pm 2-3 nights/week.  This position is perfect for someone going to college locally.  We encourage those in this position to complete their homework while they have down time on the job.  Candidates must be 18 years old.  Please apply at Cooper Farms or online.

10. Pax Machine has an immediate need for additional full time employees who have a good work ethic and a desire to grow with our company. 12. FRES will be offering a “Laffalot Summer Camp” July 20-24 (9 a.m.-2 p.m.). They are still in need of 1 HS boy to help with the camp. This is a paid position ($190/week). Contact Mrs. Hein-Evers ASAP if interested.

14. Summer babysitting: Several families are looking for summer sitters. Let Mrs. Kaiser know if you are interested.

15. The Mercer County One Stop Office is offering a youth employment program (TANF) for 16-24 year olds for the purpose of preparing for a career that is rewarding and meets personal goals. Applicants must meet income eligibility guidelines (students on an IEP may also be eligible). Call 419/586-7059 (Kelly Hoying) for more information.

16. Job Corps is a federal program that provides career-technical training for your people looking for an alternative to college, or who may be at risk for not completing high school. For more information, see recruiting. or call 800-733-JOBS.

17. Students participating in Co-Op Programs at college can do their Co-Ops here at home! Just contact a local business or the Mercer County Community Development Department for more information. (The same is true for internships and Journeyman’s training.)

• Request Career Exploration is a great feature for HS students who wish to job shadow in the area. There are so many benefits to job shadowing—experience in a career field, opportunities to explore several careers in one day, and making connections for future job opportunities/references. Every HS student is encouraged to job shadow. See Mrs. Kaiser for the necessary forms to request a job shadowing day.

o Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church needs volunteers to maintain flower beds (trimming, weeding). The flower beds are very small and won’t require much time. Call Mary Weigel for more information: 419-375-4541.

There’s a lot you can do to earn service hours. Just ask!

20. Fort Recovery is celebrating its 225th year anniversary in June 2016. The committee is looking for students and community members to help make the celebration memorable and fun! Please attend the planning meetings on the 3rd Thursday (note the new meeting dates) of each month at 7 p.m. Meetings will be held in the Community Room of the new Athletic Complex. 26. The University of Akron has several summer engineering camps. Fliers with more information are in the hallway at school.

27. Rhodes State: Rhodesology 101 has some of your favorites; Raspberry Pi, Rocket Propulsion, Robotics, Art FUNdamentals, Just Dance, Write on Track, and Sports and Fitness. This year’s camps will be June 3, 4 and 5.  Once again, campers will get a free T-Shirt and lunch will be provided each day.  You can even bring Mom and Dad along on the last day to see all the neat things you’ve been doing. 29. All students who plan to go to college should take a college entrance exam. An ACT (or SAT) test score is a requirement for admission to many colleges and universities. Stop by the guidance office for more information.

36. State of the Heart Hospice offers several bereavement services:

• Remembrance Gathering

• Camp Harmony (weekend retreat for families)

39. Students interested in job shadowing at Mercer Health should contact the Education Coordinator at 419-678-5119 to request a job-shadowing packet. Be specific about the area(s) you are interested in (you can list more than one). Students are required to get a Tb test prior to shadowing.

40. The Mercer County Sherriff’s Office sponsors an “explorers program” for students interested in careers in law enforcement. Call Captain Mark Heinll at 419-586-7724 for more information.

42. Prospective College Athletes who plan to play Division I or II sports must register with the appropriate clearinghouse. Both eligibility centers require that test scores (i.e. ACT) be sent directly from the testing agency. See Mrs. Kaiser if you need to register with either of these athletic clearinghouses because I need to mail your transcript to them! Cost is approximately $65.

Vocational:

43. There is a need for skilled labor positions (construction, pipe fitting, sheet metal, electricians, ironworkers, HVAC, heavy equipment operators/engineers, cement and masonry, etc.). See Mrs. Kaiser for more information on Apprenticeship Programs and how to earn a Journeyman’s Card.

44. Manufacturing Careers are in high demand in our area. An increasing number of high-tech jobs are unfilled because the demand is so great. Electricians, Welders, Engineers, etc. are needed. Twenty-five percent of the workforce in West Central Ohio is in manufacturing. The median wage for skilled trades/manufacturing is $50,000 per year.

45. Interested in earning a CDL? Clark State Community College offers several programs for CDL drivers (as well as other specialty areas). Call 866.CDL.4185 or visit clarkstate.edu/truck_driving.php.

46. Apollo Career Center (Lima) offers many adult-education classes and certification programs in skilled trades. Call Doug Durliat at 419.995.8353 if you would like more information.

College:

47. Attn: Students looking for housing in Dayton (near WSU/Sinclair): A local family owns a house in Dayton that is set up for student housing. A few rooms are available now and possibly more available this fall.  The house is located approximately 10 minutes from Wright State, and 10 minutes from Sinclair.  Call 419-852-9267 if interested.

48. Articulated Credit: We currently have articulation agreements with some area colleges (WSU Lake, UNOH, for example) for FRHS courses in Accounting, Ag, Tri-Star, etc. You need to ASK your college advisor if you can articulate any of your HS credits to college! This can SAVE you TIME and MONEY.

49. Rhodes State students who would like to be considered for 2015 Occupational Therapy Assisting, Physical Therapy Assisting, and Radiographic Imaging clinical entry should begin the selective admissions process this fall.  The deadline will be in February.  Information can be found at rhodesstate.edu/pta rhodesstate.edu/ota and rhodesstate.edu/rad    Students can certainly be admitted next fall, complete their general education and basic related courses and apply for 2016 clinical entry

51. John Jay Center for Learning (affiliated with Ivy Tech State College and Indiana Wesleyan) in Portland, IN offers beginning-level college courses at a very reasonable cost Call 260-729-5525.

Military:

52. Attention students in grades 9-11: If you are interested in applying for admission to a US Military Academy, start planning NOW. Academy Nomination Applications (US Air Force, Military, Naval and Merchant Marine Academies) are due in September or October of your senior year. It is a very prestigious honor to attend a military academy, and admission is highly competitive.

• Junior year is when the Academy application process truly begins. Students will start by filling out the Pre-Candidate Questionnaire, which becomes available online March 1 every year.

• Between March 1 of their junior year and December 31 of their senior year, students must also request nominations from a designated nomination category.

• Freshmen, Sophomores and Middle School students who will be graduating from high school between 2017 and 2021 may register for our Future Falcons Program (Air Force Academy). This program is designed for students in 6th grade through their first semester of their junior year. Once they register, we will place their name in a database and send them periodic mailings. The mailings are designed to keep them informed about the Academy and updated on what they need to be doing to be competitive for an appointment to the Academy.

53. Interested in joining the military after graduation?

• There is information in the guidance office on all branches of the military and each service academy.

• You need to take the ASVAB test to be considered for enlistment.

• Military recruiters visit FRHS (and homes) throughout the year. For additional information about a career in the military, visit .

• NROTC (full-tuition) scholarships are available.

• The Army ROTC offers many incentives for students who wish to go to college and enlist in the military. Full-ride scholarships are available. Inquire at your desired college to see if an opportunity exists with the ROTC that might be right for you.

• Juniors: You might want to attend a Summer Seminar to see what life as a cadet is all about. Go to the website of the academy of your choice and look under “Admissions” for more information.

54. Imagine America Scholarship for 2015 graduates: FRHS can select up to three students to receive this $1000 scholarship—FRHS will award this to the first 3 eligible students who apply each year. Only recent high school graduates who are qualified applicants and who meet the following recommended guidelines should apply: Likelihood of successful completion of postsecondary education, high school grade point average of 2.5 or greater, financial need, and demonstrated voluntary community service during the senior year Students must plan to attend a “career college” (such as Lincoln Tech or Kaplan) to be eligible. 55. Specialized Carriers & Rigging Foundation is offering $1000-$5000 grants to individuals looking to take a continuing education course (such as welding or diesel mechanics) or attend vocational/technical college. Apply online at . Grants are awarded throughout the year.

56. Sussle Scholarship ($500): Sussle is an encyclopedia of the things YOU care about. This is not your usual scholarship. There is no application or essay, and it's actually fun. By participating, you will be posting your knowledge for the benefit of others, and in return, the best contributor will win the scholarship. Eligibility: HS seniors and college students. 62. Grandlake Volleyball Club Senior Scholarship ($500): Applicants must have played junior & senior season with Grandlake and be committed to a college/university for the 2015 volleyball season. Applications due June 1.

63. Trent Bates Memorial Scholarship: Applicants must be seniors from a Mercer County High School and a member of a Mercer County 4H club, FFA, or Boy/Girl Scouts. This scholarship is for students going into Equine Science, Veterinary Séance, or a Vet Tech program. Applications due June 1.

64. Aspiring Animation Professional Scholarship Program ($1000): Open to seniors who: intend to pursue an animation related field at an accredited post-secondary school or college. Visit the website for more information: , and search “scholarships”. Deadline to apply is June 1.

65. Aspiring Pharmacy Technician Scholarship Program ($1000): Open to high school seniors. Visit and click on Pharmacy Technician Review on the right side of the page. Deadline to apply will be June 1.

66. Aspiring Fashion Professional Scholarship ($1000): for students that are interested in pursuing a fashion degree at an accredited post-secondary school or college.  More info can be found at  (at the bottom of the page).  Deadline June 1.

67. Heidi Norris Fund Scholarship: One $850 scholarship is available for a student pursuing a career in the field of respiratory therapy that resides in Auglaize, Mercer, or Shelby County (Ohio). Students must have surpassed ‘freshman’ status in college, and have a GPA of not less than 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. This is available yearly. 68. Mercer County Agricultural Society Scholarship is for graduating seniors from a Mercer County HS and a member of a Mercer County 4-H Club, FFA, Boy/Girl Scouts. Minimum GPA is 2.0. Applications due June 1.

69. The Mercer County Civic Foundation has a small pool of student loan funds available to undergraduate students. These low-interest $900 college loans are renewable, and the 4% interest rate does not begin to accrue until 6 months after graduation from college, and are interest-free if repaid within that time. Interested students should call Glenn Hux at 419/586-9950 for an application. Applications are due by June 1.

70. Abbott & Fenner Business Consultants Scholarship: To apply for this $1,000 scholarship you will need to write an essay on the topic found on the website. The A&F Scholarships are available to all high school juniors and seniors as well as all students currently registered in any accredited post secondary institution who are between the ages of 16 and 30. 71. BigSun Scholarship: The BigSun Organization is offering a $500 scholarship to a student athlete. The successful applicant will be a high school senior participating in a sport OR be attending a post secondary institute and currently involved in some sport at that institution. 72. Wright State University offers FREE TUITION to all graduating valedictorians and salutatorians in the state of Ohio. Visit scholarships@wright.edu for more information.

73. 4-H Scholarships: Ohio 4-H offers a variety of scholarships to its members—most of these being for current year graduates and a few for members already attending college. 74. Catholic Order of Foresters offers a $5000 fraternal scholarship to HS juniors. Applications will be accepted January 1 – August 31 of each year. Applicants must be individually insured COF members in good standing for at least two years prior to applying See for more information.

75. The Ohio Gamma Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity is offering six Balanced Man Scholarships totaling $5,000 to the outstanding freshman males entering the following Ohio colleges: Ohio State, Miami, Univ. of Cincinnati, Bowling Green and Toledo next year. Applicants are in no way obligated to join the fraternity. Application deadlines vary by school (May 30-September 5). See   or Mrs. Kaiser for details.

76. US Bank Scholarships: U.S. Bank will again award many $1000-$5000 scholarships to high school seniors planning to enroll next fall at an eligible four-year college participating in the U.S. Bank No Fee Education Loan Program. 77. AES Engineers Scholarship ($500-open to all majors): Applicants must answer one of the essay questions from the website at . Their belief is that achieving a high grade point average should not be the only criteria for determining who deserves to be helped. For that reason they are offering a scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by evaluating the essays that are submitted. Deadline is October 7, 2015.

78. Loans for Future Medical Students: The Medical Educational Foundation Academy of Medicine of Lima and Allen County usually offers no-interest loans to assist with tuition while students are in medical school. If interested, call Susan L. Hubbell, M.D. at (419) 226-9810.
