TITLE: Jr. Network Engineer

DEPARTMENT: Technical Services

REPORTS TO: Director of Networking

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for supporting the engineering, configuration, installation, maintenance, and upgrade of networking systems consisting of routers, switches, firewalls, and intrusion detection and prevention devices. The environment is heavily concentration on virtualization. The engineer will act as a liaison with vendors and other third-party providers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Performs engineering, implementation, and maintenance tasks on systems.

• Assists in on-going assessment and upgrade of systems as needed.

• May research, evaluate, and recommend hardware and software.

• Provides support to user management and provisioning platforms and processes.

• Assist in creating logical and physical designs of new environments.

• Serves as troubleshooter on system problems

• May evaluate vendor cost and quality of equipment and services.

• Coordinates with vendors on the installation of hardware and software and training where applicable.

• Proactively assess potential items of risk and vulnerability in the network and systems

• Provides technical support to the escalation group as needed.

• Performs configuration, debugging and support for multiple infrastructure platforms.

• Performs root cause analysis for service interruption recovery

• Works with other technical staff members, sharing information and collaborating on all applicable projects and/or escalated issues and resolution.

• Combines experience and knowledge to assess issues, research and evaluates options, and provide solid solutions.

• Stay abreast of the latest technology trends

• May travel to customer sites to provide additional support and troubleshooting.

• Must participate in on-call service schedule and respond to customer technical problems as required.

• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, Skills and abilities)

• Bachelor’s degree in information systems, computer science, computer engineering or equivalent job related experience

• Must possess a minimum of 2 to 3 years of experience in the following subject areas: Wide Area Network topologies such as MPLS, IP/VPN, OSPF, Frame Relay, Point-to-Point, VPN Tunnels, Cisco Routers, Switches and Firewalls.

• Minimum of 2 years of experience in at least 1 of the following subject areas: Juniper Routers & Firewalls, Checkpoint NG Firewall, Voice Architecture to include ShoreTel PBX or Similar Phone System.

• Previous experience working with network operating systems, troubleshooting hardware and software issues.

• Computer Networking Skills consisting of:

o Knowledge of protocols, security, capacity management concepts and performance tuning.

o Experience with system maintenance including security, load monitoring, and backup.

o Knowledge of network terminology and standards of deployment.

o Experience troubleshooting network clients and servers.

o Experienced in the evaluation, design and implementation of network clients and servers in a Wide Area Network and Local area Network installation.

o Understanding of data center operations and procedures.

• Operating Systems

o Cisco / Juniper – Internetwork Operating Systems (IOS).

o Working knowledge of operating systems and platforms including networks, programming techniques, and database technologies.

o Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7,

• Experience in Windows Server 2000/2003/2008 R1/R2 system administration including system maintenance, workstation support, Internet connectivity, security, and back-up procedures.

• Skilled at analyzing complex functions, procedures, and problems to find creative, logical, solutions.

• Strong knowledge of computer hardware and network operating systems and expertise troubleshooting hardware and software issues in a variety of software environments.

• Exceptional customer service skills with expertise in troubleshooting, diagnosing and solving complex computer related problems

• Relevant and demonstrable technical support experience in a software environment

• The ability to work quickly and accurately in a shared community environment.

Technical Certifications

• Current certifications in the following: A+, Net+, Security+, Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT) or Juniper Networks Certified Internet Associate (JNCIA) with concentration in Routing and Switching strongly preferred.

• Must possess a minimum of one current IT certification in either of the following: (Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNA) with concentration in Routing and Switching, Juniper Networks Certified Internet Specialist (JNCIS) with concentration in Routing and Switching)

Work Environment

• The employee is exposed to various business environments with quiet noise levels.

• Position is administered in an extremely fluid, fast paced fashion with multiple high-priority demands.

Physical Demands

• While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.

• The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40-60 pounds.

• Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
