APA Format

HSP 3M How to Use APA Format

2 parts: (always go together)

1. Long form – contains all bibliographic information in a Reference List or Works Cited List at the end of the write-up. Listed alphabetically by author’s last name.

2. Short form – embedded citation in the write-up.

Format of Long Form

Printed Book

Last, I. (Year). Title of the book. City: Publisher.

Note: in titles, only proper nouns are capitalized, except of course for the first word of the title.

Hawkes, C., et al. (2001). Images of society: Introduction to anthropology, psychology

and sociology. Toronto: McGraw-Hill Ryerson.

Note: et al. Means “and others.” Technically it should only be used when there are six or more authors. Since you will be citing the textbook frequently we will allow you to use the short form.

Newspaper Article from Electronic Database

Last, I. (Year, Month Day). Title of the article. Original source. Retrieved Month Day

Year from database.

Siddiqui, T. (2009, Sept. 19). Carbon vs. celluloid; green screen Toronto aims to make

filming environmentally friendly. National Post. Retrieved Oct. 8, 2009 from E

Library Canada Database.

Scholarly Journal Article from Electronic Database

Last, I. (Year, Month Day). Title of the article. Original Source, issue #, page numbers.

Retrieved Month Day Year from database.

Brown, J. and Orange, K. (2009, April). Referencing scholarly journls. American

Psychology, 33, 73-75. Retrieved February 22, 2011 from E Library Database.

Note: the most recent edition of the APA style manual does not require retrieval date, however, we will continue to use it in case of any confusion with the green booklet you once received from the library.

Website

Author or organization. (Date). Title of page. Retrieved Month Day, Year from URL.

American Psychological Association. (2011). APA style. Retrieved Feb. 21, 2011 from

Note: if there is no date given, use (n.d.). If there is no author given, use the organization. If there is no organization, start the reference with the title, never the date.

APA's website has an incredible amount of information about how to cite properly.

Newspaper Article from Newspaper's Website

Author, I. (Year, Month Day). Title of the article. Retrieved Month Day Year from

newspaper URL

Doolittle, R. (2011, Feb. 21). Looking for the gravy. Retrieved Feb. 21, 2011 from

Note: you do not need to name the original source separately after the title of the article if the URL is the original source.

Format of Short Form

These author/date/page citations go in the body of your write-up. They go before the period at the end of the sentence.

(Last, Year, p. ___).

(Hawkes, et al., 2001, p. 53). Note: et al. is a short form and requires a period.

(Siddiqui, 2009).

(Brown and Orange, 2009).

(Doolittle, 2011).

This is Ms. Gluskin citing APA style website in this document (American Psychological Association, 2011). Note: webpages do not have page numbers when cited.
