Citing Abstracts

[pic]

The following statement appears in the instructions for your second writing assignment:

I expect you to have read every reference that appears in your reference list. That means that you have obtained (through the ECU library, other library, or online) the original source, not just an abstract or summary that appeared elsewhere. You may include references to abstracts in your reference list, but they will not count towards the minimum of ten references. For an example of how to cite an abstract, see my document Citing Abstracts.

When I grade your paper, I shall select one of the references (excluding references to abstracts) and ask you to provide me with a copy of it, on paper or in an electronic medium, within 48 hours of the time of my email request. If you are unable to provide the requested copy, I shall deduct five points from your score on the second writing assignment.

As as example of how to get in trouble here, consider the following entry from the reference list of a previous student:

Aunola K., Jari, E., Onatsu, T., Pulkkinen, L. (1999). The role of parents self-esteem, mastery-orientation and social background in their parenting styles. Scandinavian Journal of Psychology. 40. 307-317 .

When I asked her for a copy of the article, what she delivered was an abstract taken from the EBSCO Psychological and Behavioral Sciences Collection, an online resource. The catalog at Joyner Library indicates that we no longer take this journal, that we have available only the first 20 volumes (1960 – 1979).

Sometimes one cannot find the original source and must use only an abstract, but I specifically specified that abstracts would not be counted towards the minimum of ten references for this assignment. If you must cite an abstract, here is an example of how to do it – notice the appearance of the word “Abstract” in the citation and the provision of the details for retrieving it online:

Aunola K., Jari, E., Onatsu, T., Pulkkinen, L. (1999). The role of parents’ self-esteem, mastery-orientation and social background in their parenting styles. Scandinavian Journal of Psychology, 40, 307-317. Abstract retrieved on the 4th of July, 2003, from the EBSCO Psychological and Behavioral Sciences Collection (accession number 4335909).
