HEB Set to Make Big Impact in Lubbockby Estroberto MaldonadoHEB recently announced to open their very first grocery store in Lubbock as part of the company’s west Texas expansion during late 2020. The store has owned a large plot of land for several years at 114th and Quaker. Current residents from the city and surrounding areas are excited to know the San Antonio based grocery store will be in their neighborhood soon. This expansion is predicted to boost the economy in the area and allow for larger opportunities for other companies to look at Lubbock differently.Grocery stores in the city have already taken notice of the competing store being built down the street from regional markets. United Supermarkets, owned by Albertsons LLC, and their sister stores Market Street and Amigos are gearing up for the competition.“There’s some positive and negative to this.” said store director Eugene Ford of United Supermarkets. “Competition is always great for business because it brings out the best in the company”. Businesses tend to thrive on competition because of the need to be the best business on the block. Employees with experience in both HEB and United Supermarkets can agree with their respective target audiences. “It’s like a Target and Walmart thing. HEB has some really good prices on stuff, United kind of tends to overprice certain stuff” said StreetSide employee Tony Culp. “We go out of our way to make sure the customer feels good, we want to make sure they’re in and out clean”. Mia Lopez of StreetSide, former HEB employee from Corpus Christi said “HEB will most likely appeal to those of younger audiences like high school to mid-thirties while other grocery stores like United will keep their older target audience”. Other key factors may decide which store a customer will go to shop. “It’s all just the mindset. Honestly, it could come down to what’s closest and what’s cheapest” said Eugene Ford.HEB is known for their signature meats and cuts. As a special consideration to the region, it will contain the look and feel of the Lubbock community which the company expects to drive in more customers. The store will offer officially licensed Texas Tech merchandise. Other key components to the future store will include True Texas BBQ containing a drive-thru, indoor and outdoor dining, and catering options. Curbside pick-up will be an option which will be competing with StreetSide and Walmart store pick-up. A new department will be added called Texas Backyard which include plants widely known and native to Texas.“Other companies see this happening in Lubbock and think if the city can support another grocery store, they’ll build their business in Lubbock as well” said Eugene Ford. “Lubbock is growing, and people are noticing. It’s a great place to invest and expand businesses.” HEB’s west Texas expansion paves the way for other companies to look into growing cities like Lubbock and expand at their own expense. According to newsroom., HEB plans to add over 400 jobs to the Lubbock economy. It’s also donated $25,000 to South Plains Food Bank and pledged to deliver a trailer of food to the food bank’s Lubbock location.Word count: 518 ................
