Station Outreach Initiatives

Internship Program:

WNEP has an internship program with area Universities and Colleges. Journalism/communication class students intern in the news, programming and production departments to acquire hands-on media skills. Students work the number of hours required for credit by the school…usually 15 hours per credit hour. Other departments also participate in the internship program.

Employee Training:

WNEP had five employees train in a management development program during 2003 and continuing through September 2004. The “LEAP” (Leadership, Excellence, Achievement, Purpose) Program is a management-training program designed to recruit and develop employees. The program provides participants with an overview of management practices, including the performance management system, specialized training in various areas, and other aspects of people management.

Job Fairs:

NYT Broadcast Group station WREG-TV participated in the NAHJ Job Fair in June 2003 and the NABJ Job Fair in August 2003. These two job fairs were journalist recruiting conventions and resumes collected were sent to all news directors in the Broadcast Group.

Two WNEP employees attended the 10th Annual Career & Internship Expo held at Bloomsburg University in October 2003. Resumes were collected and many business cards were distributed for future contact regarding our opportunities and internships.

September 14, 2003, Meteorologist was a celebrity announcer for special events at the Harvest Moon Balloon Festival in Sugarloaf.

September 16, 2003, Meteorologist was a Guest Speaker at the West Pittston Women’s Club meeting held at the Methodist Church in West Pittston.

October 9, 2003, News Director spoke to students at Penn State University about “how to get their first job in television.”

October 9, 2003, News Director attended a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new “Community Arts” major at Lackawanna College.

November 5, 2003, Anchor emceed the Unico pageant at the Woodlands Inn in Wilkes-Barre.

November 7, 2003, Meteorologist met with cub scouts working on a weather badge at Christ UCC Church in Conyngham.

November 9, 2003, Meteorologist participated in the “celebrity” reading program at Pine Grove Area Elementary School in Schuylkill County.

November 20, 2003, Meteorologist was part of Rice Elementary’s “Career Day.”

February 4, 2004, Meteorologist participated in Penn Kidder Elementary School’s reading challenge.

February 4, 2004, Meteorologist attended a reading program for the Jim Thorpe School District at the elementary school in Albrightville.

February 9, 2004, PA Outdoor Life Co-Host gave a tour to Boy Scout Pack 375 from Duryea.

 

March 2, 2004, Meteorologist was the key note speaker at Bloomsburg University’s Dress for Success night held for the Business College.

 

March 6, 2004, Meteorologist gave a tour of the station to Boy Scout Pack 160.

 

March 18, 2004, Meteorologist attended Career Day at Lackawanna Trail Elementary School.

 

March 19-21, 2004, The majority of WNEP Employees participated in Home & Backyard Expo 2004 at the Wyoming Valley Mall.

 

March 27, 2004, Meteorologist gave a tour of the station for Cub Scout Pack 7 from Mifflinville.
