“The new state-of-the-art wing and major upgrades at Quinebaug Valley Community College offer valuable resources for Northeast Corner students as well as for the community at large. The speakers at the QVCC ribbon-cutting ceremony will include DPW Commissioner Fleming; Dianne E. Williams, president, QVCC; Dr. Louise S. Berry, chair, the Board of Trustees of the Community Colleges; Chancellor Marc S. Herzog, Connecticut Community Colleges; and State Sen. Donald E. Williams, Jr., 29th District.

QVCC’s President Williams, speaking about the recently completed project, said, “This expansion and renovation has been long awaited and the college and communities we serve are excited with the results.”

The QVCC addition and renovations project consisted of 30,000 square feet of new space and 9,000 square feet of renovations to the existing facility. The scope included ten new classrooms with Internet technology, expansion of the library and study space, additional computer rooms, a plastics laboratory, administrative and faculty offices, a new bookstore, art gallery, career center, student lounge, space for community activities and meetings, and new parking.

The official groundbreaking ceremony marking the start of this project was held on Mar. 15, 2005.

Quinebaug Valley Community College is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. The college first opened its doors for classes in leased space on Sept. 27, 1971 with 215 students. In 1983 the college moved into the present-day campus. The college currently has a population of 1,800 students.

NVCC President Richard L. Sanders will serve as master of ceremonies for The Technology Building groundbreaking ceremony planned for the college’s Leever Atrium. The speakers will include DPW Commissioner Fleming; Mayor Michael Jarjura, City of Waterbury; Dr. Louise S. Berry, chair, the Board of Trustees of the Community Colleges; Chancellor Marc S. Herzog, Connecticut Community Colleges; State Sen. Joan V. Hartley, 15th District; and State Sen. Louis C. DeLuca, 32nd District.

Commenting on the much-needed project, NVCC President Sanders said, “Most of the careers in the 21st century require a working knowledge of technology, and this new state-of-the-art building will help us better prepare students for careers in those areas.”

The Technology Building is being built on the east side of the campus next to Ekstrom Hall, replacing several wooden modular buildings which have been removed.

The new facility will consolidate NVCC’s technology program under one roof; the college currently leases space off-campus for its automotive technology curriculum.

The new Technology Building will consist of a three-floor, 100,000 square-foot state-of-the-art facility. It will contain ten computer classrooms, ten general classrooms, four Computer Aided Design laboratories, and several engineering technology labs. It will also include the Automotive Technology Center, kitchen and dining facilities for the Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts programs, and a greenhouse laboratory for the Horticulture program.

The architect for the NVCC Technology Building is Amenta/Emma Architects, P.C., of Hartford, and the contractor is Lawrence Brunoli, Inc. of Farmington. Completion of this project is scheduled for February 2008.

The present NVCC campus was built in four phases: Founders Hall was constructed on the original site in 1963; Kinney Hall was built in 1977; Ekstrom Hall in 1980; and the Fine Arts Center, Student Center and Learning Resources Center in 1990. Today the college offers more than 100 associate degree and credit certificates and hundreds of non-credit courses. NVCC serves 35 communities in western Connecticut and currently has a student population of 5,600.

The state Department of Public Works is responsible for the design and construction of major capital building projects (except highways and bridges) for most state agencies, leasing and acquisitions statewide, and facility management, maintenance and security of state buildings in the greater Hartford area.
