Project Description:
Project Objectives:
1. Minority group isolation will be reduced at 4 minority group isolated magnet schools. Minority group isolation will be reduced by a specific number of percentage points each year. By project year 3, minority group isolation of black or Hispanic students will be reduced from 8 to 13 percentage points at each of the 4 magnet schools. Each year, each magnet school will receive at least 100 applications.
2. Each year, each magnet school's School Improvement Plan will include objectives and activities that support the adoption of specific systemic reforms (e.g., Next Generation Science Standards, 5E Inquiry) and describe how they are coordinated with MSAP activities.
3. All students, in each magnet school program, will receive magnet theme instruction coordinated with systemic reforms for a specific number of hours per week.
4. Each year, each magnet school will achieve its SPI goal in reading, mathematics, writing and science. Each year, each magnet school will achieve its SPI goals for its total population and for each defined subgroup. By the end of each project year, the percentage of students from major racial and ethnic subgroups in magnet schools receiving assistance who score proficient or above on the CMT for reading, math, writing will increase compared to the previous year. By the end of the project period, magnet school students will develop mastery of the magnet curriculum.
5. Each year, magnet school teachers will receive at least 30 hours of professional development related to the implementation of systemic reforms and at least 30 hours of professional development related to the development and implementation of the magnet theme.
6. All students enrolled in magnet schools will have equitable access to high quality education. Each year, for each magnet school, specific percentages of classes will reflect their grade’s enrollment for each racial/ethnic group (and gender for STEM classes) by +15 percentage points. There will be an increase in parent participation at each magnet school. Each year, there will be an increase (compared with the previous year) in the numbers of parents who participate in school activities.
