It is your responsibility to ensure that you find ways to complete your service in the time allotted.The idea of community service, in general is not that one simply does something for free. The purpose is to contribute time and effort to a project where the entire community will benefit and the defendant will pay back society for the offense they have committed. Community service must be completed at a non-profit agency or government agency. Examples of services that ARE acceptable include, but are not limited to:Helping at a food pantry or homeless shelterStuffing envelopes for a fundraiser for a organization, such as a cancer societyParticipating in an established highway or park clean up program, Walking or clean after the animals at an animal shelterExamples of services that ARE NOT acceptable include, but are not limited to:Volunteering at school in a club you are a member of (cheerleader, debate, athletics)and receiving credit for bothProviding babysitting, yard work, and/or other services for a family friend for freeAttending religious services Doing things for parents or other individuals for freeWhatever service you decide to do, YOU MUST HAVE A SIGNATURE (INCLUDING A PHONE NUMBER AND NAME OF A CONTACT PERSON) FROM THE AGENCY OR PROGRAM TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THE HOURS. No Hand Written Essays will be accepted!APOLOGY NOTETo protect the privacy and security of victims you should not contact any victim directly. Your apology letter should be attached with your paper work ready to be submitted at your due date. There you will see a list of available Teen Court dates. Once you select a date and location which meets your needs you must send an email to TeenCourt@ with your name and the date you would like to serve. Your reservation will be confirmed via email. Please note that Teen Court is held in Frisco, McKinney, and Plano. Please ensure you realize which location you are reserving a spot for. Once you RSVP you are expected to attend. PARK BLVD.Each night you serve in Teen Court counts as one jury term.Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat happens if I don’t complete Teen Court?Your case will be referred back to the original court where you first appeared. That court will impose the full fine (and any other conditions of your sentence) and a conviction will appear on your record. If you fail to pay the fine in the time allotted your driver’s license or ability to get a driver’s license may be suspended. If you are 17 or older, or once you are 17, a warrant may be issued for your arrest. Can I do more than the minimum amount of community service at the Animal Shelter?Yes, you may do all of your community service at the animal shelter. All that is required is that you complete the minimum amount. The Animal Shelter looks closed when I go to volunteer. Why?The Animal Shelter is often closed to the public, but is open to volunteers 2-5 p.m. Monday – Friday, and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. If you go and the doors are locked, knock on the door and windows until someone comes out to help you. Do not call. Staff is limited and are unable to answer the phone.I signed up for jury duty, but when I arrived no one was there. Why?Teen Court is held in multiple locations around the county. You must be sure that you are at the right location. This is a part of your sentencing. You are responsible for having accurate times and locations.What do I do if I need an extension?Extensions are not granted. I’ve left messages, but my call hasn’t been returned. Thank you!Can I do Community Service with Teen Court?If your sentencing ranges 28-48 hours of community service, Teen Court allows you to do no more than 2 extra jury terms. After completing your assigned jury terms, 5 hours of community service will be awarded for each jury term. As a Parent, what can I do to help my Teen learn from their mistake?Hold them accountable for their actions. We understand school is in session, but have your Teen do all the needed communication required for their sentencing. Misdemeanors are usually minor crimes, but they can be the start of serious legal problems if it continues. Laws are enforced to protect people. Stress this at home. You have the most important job in society– raising a child. Know when to seek help.
