DID YOU KNOW ?

– More than 140,000 tonnes of electronic equipment accumulate in Canadian landfills each year.

– In 2002, Canadians disposed of 157,000 metric tonnes of electronic waste and only 9,000 tonnes were recycled.

– Some major electronic manufacturers, such as HP Canada, offer recycling programs to divert old computer and printing equipment from landfills and reduce e-waste (see web site above).

– Some items cannot be recycled, so steer clear. Examples are:

• shiny plastic gift wrap (consider using fabric bags instead: you can buy these cheaply at a dollar store and use them for years);

• the clamshell containers used to package strawberries, baked goods, etc.

• styrofoam packaging in general.
