Statement and Statistics
York College, a senior college of The City University of New York (CUNY), was founded in 1966 and calls a 50-acre campus in the heart of Jamaica, Queens its permanent home for the past 30 years.
York College is a place where more than 8,500 students from approximately 125 nations of origin and diverse cultures come together to pursue the promise of a better future through higher education. Reflective of New York City, one of the most diverse cities in the world, the York College campus buzzes with conversations in these myriad languages as students and faculty assume their roles as engaged participants in the college's vision to be "a transformative urban institution and a cultural hub."
More than 82% of the student population represent various minority groups (Black, Latino/Hispanic, Asian /Pacific Islander, Native American, Jewish, Eastern Europeans and others). A large percentage of the students are the first in their families to attend college.
The college offers baccalaureate degrees in nearly 50 fields of study, including the liberal arts and sciences, accounting and business, journalism, communications technology, computer science, social work, teacher education, aviation management and various health professions including nursing and a BS/MS in Occupational Therapy, the only one of its kind within CUNY.
York recently launched four Master's programs in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physician Assistant Studies, Clinical Trial Management and Social Work. Since its first commencement exercises in 1971, York has graduated more than 27,000 students and counts among its proud graduates hundreds of physicians, research scientists, educators, attorneys and business executives in media, finance, technology and more.
York College's new Academic Village and Conference Center (AVCC), included in CUNY's five-year capital budget plan request, will be a vibrant, state-of-the-art 162,988 square-foot facility and will be a beacon of Southeast Queens and downtown Jamaica. The nine-floor AVCC will house York's School of Business and Information Systems. Some of its features include a sustainable roof garden, a bookstore, a caf?, an art gallery featuring exhibits focusing on the Tuskegee Airmen, and York's Small Business Development Center. Its conference center will be available to the Greater Jamaica community.
The addition of the AVCC will also benefit the community by creating employment opportunities. It will address the need for additional space fueled by York College's record enrollment growth. Current enrollment stands at 8,511, an increase of 57% from the 5,357 students enrolled in 2000.
Through the Division of Workforce and Economic Development (continuing education), the college also offers more than 200 courses ? including paralegal studies, the health professions, fitness, design and construction ? developed to meet the needs of working adults.

Project Descriptions
Academic Village/Conference Center This project will create an Academic Village/Conference Center on the site of the Classroom Building as recommended by the 2011 Master Plan Amendment. The 165,000-square-foot facility will be the new home of the School of Business with modern classrooms, computer labs and conference rooms that will be available for use by the community. It also will serve as the student center. The new building will transform the west side of the campus and add a vibrant new presence to the Jamaica, Queens, community. The project is in design.

Academic Core Dewatering Recent increases in the Queens water table have brought water levels to 3 feet above the basement floor of the Academic Core Building, the largest of the college's facilities. This has created a hazardous situation, necessitating the relocation of the electric distribution system and a permanent solution for the infiltration. This project will waterproof the interior of the basement using the latest methods. To fully insulate the basement space, equipment will be mounted on platforms, ensuring further protection of York's central plant. This project also will replace damaged electrical panels and distribution-system equipment.

Campus Building Envelope Repairs The Academic Core Building and other major buildings on campus are over 30 years old and exhibit signs of exterior wear. Leaks and water infiltration have continued over time. The result is ongoing decline of fa?ade and roof conditions across multiple buildings. This project addresses cracked and spalled brick masonry and copings, shelf angle deterioration, cavity wall defects, deteriorated mortar joints, window and skylight deterioration, inoperable roof and gutter drains, flashing and membrane deterioration. The Academic Core represents the majority of academic space on campus and prioritizing envelope repairs in this building maximizes benefits to the campus community. Work to this and other campus building envelopes will be phased.

ADA Restroom Upgrades in Academic Core and HPEC To provide accessibility to restrooms and address a deficit of gender-neutral single occupant toilet rooms, this project will retrofit the existing restrooms in the Academic Core and HPEC Buildings for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, NYC building code and NYC Local Law 79. The project requires modifications to all toilet rooms and expansion to some toilet rooms in order to introduce adequate maneuverability and ADA-compliant plumbing fixtures. The work will impact a number of adjacent spaces requiring reconfiguration and swing space during construction. Phasing of work will be coordinated to manage disruption to college operations with many areas of the building affected in this project.

Instructional Space Upgrade Many classrooms on campuses are outdated and reflect aging technology, fittings and furnishings. This project will upgrade campus classrooms with interactive whiteboard displays, projectors and screens, lecterns, ceiling-mounted speakers, dimmable energy-efficient lighting, new furniture and networked equipment. Current instructional delivery models rely heavily on technology-integrated learning spaces. This project will help bring the college's classrooms up to a standard commensurate with CUNY's other senior colleges and schools.
