Meant to protect African Americans from black codes (laws that kept AA from holding jobs, decreased property rights, & limited other rights). All states also had to give all citizens equal protection of the law. Amendment 153rd of Civil War Amendments. Ratified in 1870. Last of Civil War Amendments. State can’t deny right to vote b/c of race – suffrage for AA men.
