Course Structure

Chemistry-I meets 4 days a week in McGowan room M21 (M,Tu,Th,F) and meets in the Chemistry Lab (McGowan room M23) on Wednesday. Many new concepts are introduced rapidly, and a large number of concepts learned early on are critical elements of the more advanced lessons later. It is important for you to come to me if you are having difficulties with the material, don't understand things or need additional help. This course is designed as an introductory survey course for students who intend to pursue a post-secondary education. Key concepts in Chemistry are covered so as to prepare students for success in college, and to provide an overview of the most important principals in basic Chemistry. We will explore the theories of matter, its interaction, and how everything you see in the known universe boils down to three common building blocks of all matter: Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons, the building blocks of the Universe!!!

Grading

• I grade on a points system with the following typical value approximations for each type:

1. Homework & Worksheets 10-30 Points Each (often just completion/attempt checks)

2. Quizzes 30 Points Each

3. Lab reports 30 Points Each

4. Tests 100-200 Points Each

*5. Mid Term & Final Weighted to Roughly 1/4 of 2nd & 4th Quarter Grades

• Grades can be accessed by all students on PowerSchool:

Letter grades are based on the percentage of total points earned by the student out of the total number of points possible in a given marking period and scaled according to the districts letter grade scale found in your handbook. See Student Handbook for further explanation letter grade assignment.

• Chemistry can be a challenging subject with many new concepts, but each student is fully capable of receiving an A in this class, if you really want it and are willing to work for it.

Homework and worksheet assignments (10-30 points)

Expect frequent short homework assignments and problem worksheets; most assignments will be due the following day in class. To receive credit, problem sets must be completed by their due date. If you are absent, you are responsible for seeking help mastering the material missed. After they covered in class, worksheets are not accepted and will receive a grade of zero if not otherwise excused.

Lab reports:

Chem I & Chem I Honors (30 pts):

For each lab, you and a lab partner will be responsible for handing in a lab assignment. Though data will be collected with a partner, each student is responsible for writing their own report. It is encouraged that lab partners share ideas, and help each other understand key concepts, but each partners answers and phrasing should be expressed in their personal words. Don't try to impress me with vast amounts of vocabulary words, if I see you are restating key concepts in your own words, that proves you are grasping the material. Stating observations, explanations, hypothesis, and ideas clearly in your own words is better than copying definitions or explanations from a book or website. Chem I Honors student will receive further instructions on their lab report requirements.

Quizzes (30 points):

A few quizzes per chapter should be expected. Most quizzes will be scheduled, and I try to make it very clear exactly which key concepts I expect you to know for the quizzes and tests.

Tests (100-200 points):

Tests will cover material from one or two chapters, depending on the length and complexity of the material in the chapter.

Classroom Expectations

• Bring your imagination, creativity, and unique perspective to every class!!!

• Participate with class discussions, and expression of pertinent ideas, and questions....THINK!!!

• Arrive on time, be in your seat and ready to begin when the bell rings, eager to explore!

• There will be many handouts in this class, periodic tables, equations sheets and other references, you are responsible to bring these to class every day, how you store them, and how you take notes is up to you, but I do recommend a 3-Ring Binder, or Document Folder to hold all your reference materials. If we have a quiz and you don't have these items, your resulting grade is the consequence.

• Come to class prepared - bring your notebook, pencil (or pen), scientific calculator, and a highlighter every day. (Some inexpensive scientific calculators with scientific notation are the TI-30XIIs:$14.99, HP-9S: $11.99, HP-30S: $14.95, Casio FX-260: $8.79, or any graphing calculator should be fine. Check Wal-Mart, Department stores, office supply stores, Radio Shack or online. We will use supplied TI-30X IIs' in class only, these can not be used for study halls, so have one handy with you at school. I will teach the key punch procedures for this model)

• Pencil is recommended for all grades assignments, tests, and quizes. Always write equation first, and show each step in your work if you are interested in partial credit. In real labs scientists often make miscalculations that frustrate their research, but frequently colleagues can spot simple mistakes if the persons' calculation and logic is clearly depicted. (Plus this lets you show me what concepts you do understand, even if you don't get every detail perfect)

• ASK QUESTIONS…if you don’t, I will assume you understand all the material covered.

• Be respectful of your classmates and teacher. Ask permission before leaving the classroom and raise your hand before speaking.

• Maturity: as upperclassmen some of you may even be able to vote right now, the rest of you will be voting citizens soon too! I expect you to have fun, and enjoy class, and to study industriously and conduct yourselves with pride. This is especially important in the labratory where immaturity can be extremely hazardous.

• ABSOLUTLY NO FOOD OR DRINK IN THE LAB!

• All rules and standards of conduct listed in the Carlisle Student Handbook will be enforced, but you should know these things by now in this stage of your student careers!
