Course Introduction:

Welcome to Science 10 at Halifax West High School! This semester we will be continuing the study of many science topics introduced to you in grade 9 science along with a few new ones.  Science Education in Nova Scotia focuses on the development of scientific literacy. Scientific literacy is an evolving combination of the science-related attitudes, skills, and knowledge students need to develop inquiry, problem solving and decision-making abilities; to become life-long learners; and to maintain a sense of wonder about the world around them. To develop scientific literacy, students will be provided with diverse learning experiences that provide opportunities to explore, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, appreciate, and understand the interrelationships among science, technology, and the environment that will affect their personal lives, their careers, and their future. The course consists of four units and includes topics on sustainability of ecosystems, chemical reactions, weather dynamics and motion.

|Unit 1:  Introduction & Weather Dynamics |Unit 2:  Chemical Reactions |

| |Investigating Chemical Reactions |

|Weather: Observations and Measurements |Formula Writing |

|Water’s Role in Our World |Chemical Reactions |

|Energy Transfer |STSE Connections |

|Weather Forecasting | |

|Unit 3:  Motion |Unit 4:  Sustainability of Ecosystems |

|Motion:  Position, Distance and Displacement |Sustainability |

|Graphs of Speed and Velocity |Sustainability of an Ecosystem |

|Motion:  Graphs and Formulas |STSE and Sustainable Development |

|Research in Science and Technology | |

Please Note: If you would like to view the specific curriculum outcomes for Grade 10 Science please go to the following website:

Science Textbook and Binder:

Each student will be provided with a copy of the SciencePower 10 textbook.  You will be notified when to bring this to class with you. It is recommended that each student have a separate binder for Science 10. You will also need a separate duotang that will be passed in at the end of each unit. It is your responsibility to keep neat, up-to-date notes.  If you miss class time it is your responsibility to catch up on missed work and any lab data.

Science 10 Supplies:

This semester you will need a basic calculator, paper, graph paper, colored pencils and a ruler. Calculators will not be provided for you during class, tests, or exams so if you do not bring one you will have to go without. Cell phones may not be used in class as a calculator for any assessments.

Course Assessment and Evaluation:

The following assessment information on student learning will be collected throughout the semester and evaluated periodically. PowerSchool will be updated at the end of each unit, as well as once a month.

|The course is divided into the following four units of study: |

|Unit One    Weather Dynamics    |Formal Assessment:  12% |Final Mark: |

|(25%) |Informal Assessment: 13% |Term 1&2        80% |

| | |Final assessment    20% |

| | |Total             100% |

|Unit Two    Chemical Reactions      (25%) |Formal Assessment:  12% | |

| |Informal Assessment: 13% | |

|Unit Three    Motion                              (25%) |Formal Assessment:  12% | |

| |Informal Assessment: 13% | |

|Unit Four    Sustainability                  (25%) |Formal Assessment:  12% | |

| |Informal Assessment: 13% | |

Science 10 Investigations:

Throughout the semester you will be participating in a variety of investigations or practical lab activities. If you miss a lab you are required to get the lab data and information from a classmate. Make up labs will not be an option.

Science 10 Test, Quizzes and Assignments:

There will be numerous tests, quizzes and assignments throughout the semester.  You will be notified well in advance of an upcoming test and extra help will be provided for those who are in need of help.  If you miss a test, quiz or in class assignment due to an unexcused absence you will receive a failing grade.  If a test or quiz is missed due to a valid, excused absence it will be written the next day you return to class.

Extra Help:

Extra help will be available upon request. Please come prepared with specific questions.

Some final thoughts...............

• Come each day prepared and ready to learn.

• Ask questions as often as you have them!

• Be respectful of others and they will be respectful of you.

• Attend extra help sessions right away if you are having difficulty.

• Actively participate in class each day and have fun!

• Your cell phone needs to be away during class!

• “I wasn’t here” will not be an acceptable excuse.
