MathsMaster Your Maths: Week 30Tables: Week 30Planet Maths: Topic 17 Percentages 2 and Topic 29 VariablesBook P.107/ Strand: Number/ Strand Unit: Percentages. Book P.179/ Strand: Algebra/ Strand Unit: Variables & Equations. Topic 17:There are at least 2 ways to calculate a percentage of a number: The fraction method (on which the earlier percentages unit concentrated) and the decimal method (on which this unit concentrates). For example, to calculate 25% of 48: Fraction method: 25% = 1 4 1 4 of 48 = 48 ÷ 4 =12 Decimal method: 25% = 0.25 0.25 x 48 = 12.00 It is suggested that if the percentage converts to a convenient fraction, use the fraction method. Chn have a list of such percentages on an orange handout (pic below) and the children might be asked to commit the most common of these to memory. If the percentage does not convert to a convenient fraction, the decimal method is used. When using a calculator, the decimal method is usually best. One of the most common mistakes made by children is to forget to insert the decimal point at the end of the calculation, as follows: 36% of 48 36% = 0.36 0.36 x 48 = 1,728 For this reason, estimating is an important skill. The child will realise that 36% (=1/3) of 48 can’t possibly be a number in the thousands. To estimate answers, convert the percentage to the nearest convenient fraction and obtain an approx. answer using the fraction method. So 9% = 1/10, 18% = 1/5, 53% = ?, Children should have the following notes in their folders (If not let me know and I will send you a copy) Before you begin you could look at the following warm up activities from Planet Maths 6th class online. your own log in and enter ‘Percentages and Decimals’ in the folens online search bar. Explain to them that they have been working with variables for years! In 1st class, they were presented with questions such as: 4 + = 9 What number goes in the box? Which is exactly the same as: 4 + x = 9 What is the value of x?Maths at home/parental involvement Look for gadgets and appliances that have microchips: games consoles, fridge, mobile phones, clock radio, TV, DVD player, electronic musical instruments, calculators, digital cameras, electronic book readers, measuring instruments, central heating thermometers and timers, burglar alarms, scanners, printers, etc.Rem. you do not have to do all the qtns.
