Tutorial day: TBA

I. Welcome to Chemistry! We will spend the semester learning more about the matter

and energy in the things all around you. I expect everyone to be respectful of

everyone else in the classroom. We will do labs whenever possible and actively learn

the concepts required by the Georgia Performance Standards.

The chemistry curriculum includes more abstract concepts such as the structure of

atoms, structure and properties of matter, and the conservation and interaction of

energy and matter. Students investigate chemistry concepts through experience in

laboratories and field work using the processes of inquiry.

II. Materials

It is required for you to have the following items for class every day:

(1) 1½ - 2 inch 3-ring binder with paper to keep all work

(2) Scientific Calculator - must have scientific notation ability

(3) Pens and pencils

The textbook is World of Chemistry.Zumdahl, Zumdahl, DeCoste (McDougal Littell)

2007. You may take it home and use it there for assignments. The cost of replacing

the textbook (if lost or destroyed) is $69.90

III. Grading

Grading is aligned with the Georgia Performance Standards outlined by the Georgia Department of Education.

Grade Weights

SCSh1-9 Habits of Mind & Nature of Science 5%

SC1 Matter (Chapters 2 & 4) 10%

SC2 Chemical Composition (Chapters 6-9) 15%

SC3&SC4 Atomic Theory and Periodic Table (Chapters 3 & 11) 15%

SC5&SC6 Reaction Rates & Kinetics (Chapters 10, 13, 14, & 17) 20%

SC7 Acids, Bases, & Solutions (Chapters 15 & 16) 10%

Common Assessments 5%

Comprehensive Final 20%

Assignment Values

Tests 100 points each

Quizzes/ Projects 50 points

Homework 50 points per unit

Classwork 50 points per unit

Laboratory Reports 100 points

Formal Lab Reports 100 points (2 lab grades)

Reading/Writing 50 points

Homework and classwork will be handed out in packets with assignment sheets and will be due the class immediately after the test date. No late packets will be accepted unless you are absent and have a valid excuse note turned in to attendance.

IV. Make-Up Work

The policy for makeup work is in accordance with those in the student handbook. You

are responsible for arranging to get assignments and notes and making up all

assignments, labs and tests missed due to excused absence. Please see me before

or after class upon your return (don’t wait until I start class!) Labs that can be made up

must be completed within one week. Labs that cannot be made up will require an alternate

assignment. Make-up tests must be scheduled according to the student handbook. The

last day to turn in any unit work is the first day of the following unit. For example: the

last day to turn in the chapter 2 packet is the day we begin chapter 3. After this date

a zero will be entered in the gradebook and parents may be notified.

V. Classroom Expectations

I expect you to follow the rules in the student handbook. Appropriate lab behavior is

mandatory, unacceptable behaviors will result in warnings, parent contact, removal from

lab, and/or administrative referral.

A few other expectations are as follows:

1. Ask questions if you don't understand! Keep in mind if all you say is "I don't

understand" it does not help me identify where you got lost. Be specific! Try

questions like "I didn't understand where this number came from."

2. Get extra help if you need it. See above for tutorial days.

3. Be an active part of the class. Participate in group activities and labs. Be ready to

answer questions and work problems.

4. Remain in your desk and working until the bell. Gathering at the door is not

acceptable behavior.

5. Copying any work that is turned in for a grade is cheating. Working together

means having the same data and general information. Word-for-word identical

answers means someone copied. This will result in a zero for the grade, parent

contact, and administrative referral (second offense or test).

VI. Discipline

Follow the rules. Failure to do so will result in teacher warning (1st) and possible time out

to another classroom, parent contact (2nd), detentions (2nd), and administrative referrals

if necessary. Repeated or severe misbehavior in the lab may result in permanent removal

from the lab.

VII. Tardies

Tardies will be addressed in accordance with the school policy.

SAFETY CONTRACT:

A science laboratory can be a safe place to work if you, the student, plan ahead and are alert and cautious. The following practices will be followed.

1. Read lab procedures before starting the lab.

2 Do not start the lab without your teacher's permission.

3. Only teacher is allowed in the storeroom or preparation area.

4. Know the locations of the fire extinguishers, eye wash and shower stations

5. Wear goggles and gloves when instructed to do so by your teacher.

6. Do not carry hot equipment or dangerous chemicals.

7. Pull back long hair while in the laboratory. Long sleeves should also be rolled up.

8. Handle all organisms with caution and be careful not to harm them in any way.

9. Handle chemical bottles with extreme care.

10. Be careful when using any sharp instruments such as razor blades or scalpels.

11. Keep hands away from the face and wash them immediately after the lab activity is completed.

12. Notify your teacher when you suspect a dangerous lab situation (such as injury, broken glassware, or spilled chemicals.)

13. Clean up your work area at the end of each laboratory activity.

14. Return all materials to the location indicted by your teacher.

15. Dispose of chemicals as instructed by your teacher.

16. Dispose of all garbage properly.

17. Appropriate behavior is expected in the lab!
