Health Course Description:
This course is designed to promote student learning with regard to health issues that affects their immediate and long-term health. Maintaining a healthy way of living requires a balance of physical, mental-emotional, and social well-being.
Health education provides students with knowledge of skills necessary to confront health related issues and make a smooth transition from puberty to adolescence.
Physical Education Philosophy:
Physical Education is an important part of the total educational program. Students participate in physical activities that allow them to develop an understanding of the physical abilities of themselves and others. Students become aware of the social benefits of physical activity through participation. The mental and emotional benefits of physical activity become evident when an active role in physical activity is encouraged.
The total development of students is the goal of the educational system. Physical Education is a vital part in reaching this goal. A variety of activities are incorporated into the physical education program. Activities vary from creative movement to lifetime sports. The age level of the individuals is a factor determining what activity is to be provided, but the outcome at any level should be the same.
All students have the need and right to enjoy the benefits of physical activity. Through a creative and well-rounded physical education program, students will benefit.
Class Expectations:
1. Be in your assigned squad and ready to work when the tardy bell rings.
2. Participate in class: Students are expected to participate during the entire class period.
- Students who put forth the effort will develop the skills needed to do well in class.
- Class time consists of 30 minutes of health and 1 hour of agilities, stretching, conditioning, skills, and play. Students are required to participate in all to receive full credit.
3. Turn in any assignments on time.
4. Positive Attitude/Behavior: Students must exhibit a positive attitude and good behavior every day.
- Respect for teacher, classmates, and self is required.
- Students will be introduced to new games and skills. Everyone is on different levels. Bullying and humiliation, abuse or harassment will NOT be tolerated!
- Students must show good character and act appropriately at all times to receive full credit. If needed, students will be redirected to the safe seat, buddy room, focus room, and office. If students have to leave class they will be required to write a paper.
5. If a student is absent it is their responsibility to find out what was missed and make it up.
6. Bring binder with paper and pen/pencil to every class.
7. Dress out: Students are expected to dress out with the appropriate clothing every class period.
- Appropriate clothing: tennis shoes (must tie), socks, t-shirt (w/ school appropriate logo).
- Approximately 5 minutes will be given at the beginning to dress out, and 10 minutes is given to dress back in.
Health Units:
- Health units vary depending on the class. All classes focus on making healthy choices and preventive measures to take to stay healthy.
Physical Education Units:
- Soccer, Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Team Handball, Floor Hockey, Table Tennis, Badminton, Tennis, Softball, Dance Team Building activities, Current Event activities, and games.
- Students will also participate in the Presidential Physical Fitness Testing each quarter. Skills for this include the mile run, shuttle run, pull ups, push ups, sit ups, and sit and reach.
Lockers:
1. Lockers will be given out during the first week of school.
2. The will be shared with one or two classmates.
3. Lockers are to be used to store gym clothes and accessories only.
4. A lock will be provided by the P.E. department. The students are responsible for keeping this lock on at all times. If it is lost, a fee of $4.50 will be assessed.
5. In the past locks disappear and stuff is stolen because students do not lock the locker. It is very important that lockers are locked at all times. It is also important that you do not give out your combination to anyone.
Grading:
1. Daily points: 10 points are earned every day.
- Students must be present and meet all expectations to earn points for the day.
• Absent: See “Make up Work” below
• No Dress/Buddy room/Focus Room/Team Focus/ISS
> 1st offense: Can make up for 100% credit.
> 2nd offense: Can make up for a maximum of 75% credit.
> 3rd offense: Can make up for a maximum of 50% credit.
AFTER 3 NO DRESSES IT WILL BE A ZERO.
2. Health Points:
- Will be issued for assignments and quizzes.
- Notebooks: notebook checks will be done randomly throughout the year for 25 points.
3. Health Quizzes: Will be given normally on a two week basis. Quizzes will cover recent material being discussed in class.
Make-up work:
1. Tests: Students who are absent the day of the test.
- The student must make and appointment with the teacher to make up the missed test. (Before school, after school, or during seminar).
2. Daily Points: Students who are absent for daily activities.
- The student has the option of making up the daily points (unless prohibited by the district or principal) with paper make up, physical activity make up, or free day.
Paper: One page hand written over any sport or physical activity established in the middle school physical education curriculum. It does not have to be researched.
Physical make up: The student must make an appointment with teacher outside of class time and complete either a 7 minute jog or 15 minute walk.
Free day: One free day will be given per quarter to use for absences. These will not carry over form quarter to quarter.
