Spanish Springs Hot in February

Cruise in Always Popular, but this was the biggest in memory

The Villages welcomes classic car owners on the third Saturday of every month.

Weather permitting, the winter months will draw the full capacity of over 350 cars along with big crowds of onlookers. This February was no exception. In my 5 years of attending just about every show at Spanish Springs, this was - by far - the best attended. My “Perfect Storm” theory is that everyone was cooped up at home with the recent poor weather, and they were all eager to finally take in some beautiful weather. Maybe call it the “Cabain Fever Syndrome.” The Square was at capacity wirh show cars, and crowds were overwhelming! [pic]

Among all of those chrome-plated hot rods was our lone Model T, John’s 1922 Huckster. Bill Holzmann accompanied John. Howard Holmes was across the street in his Model A. Bobb Partridge dropped by, as did Carol Storms.

At 7:15 PM trophies were given, followed by the Cruise-out at 7:30 PM. Bill and I gave the huge crowd a treat as we paraded back through the Square. (more pictures on website) ([pic]

INGA HOLZMANN BILL HOLZMANN

Put this one on your calendar! An “Over the top” fund raiser at Market of Marion.

On Saturday, February 27 there will be a major car show at the Market of Marion. Over 400 cars are expected. There are 70 trophies and $6,000 in prizes to be awarded.

If you want to sell a car, bring it to the Car Corral, where you can let all know that it is for sale. There is no extra charge for the corral.

Spend some time shopping and checking out the cars. You could even bring your classic car and join in the fun ($15 advance, $20 at the gate).

Yours truly will be on parking detail and later selling raffle tickets. Proceeds will go to The Villages Vintage Car Club and Villagers for Hospice. (

TLC Cruisers see the sights

February 6 was a very pleasant Saturday; cool in the low sixties with some clouds. A perfect day for a ride through the Florida Countryside!

Ken and Sue Waller met John Farr at Cracker Barrel. After a nice lunch, we started north on US441. One of the purposes of this tour was to do a “dry run” to see how to get to some upcoming events. We turned east on SR42, then north on US 25 around beautiful Lake Weir. The first stop was Lake Weir HS, followed by Leeward Air Ranch.

We called Ted and Helen Harder, but they were out (I did not call ahead (. We did stop by Chuck and Gloria Ufkes’ place. Chuck was flying a plane and was grounded in Oklahoma by weather, but Gloria proved to be a most gracious hostess. We visited on her beautiful lanai. After that she escorted our Model Ts around the 6,000+ foot runway. We were so impressed with the homes and hangars (many designed by Chuck), and the variety of aircraft peeking out of open hangars.

After that we stopped for some delicious soft-serve ice cream at Steve’s Ice Cream in Belleview. From there we went south on US441, passing the Markets of Marion and Orange Blossom Hills. We ended the tour at Spanish Springs Town Square.

Overall time for the cruise, including lunch, was 3.5 hours and we travelled about 25 miles.

So the “Cruise to Nowhere” was actually to somewhere. The next Cruise to Nowhere may go somewhere – or maybe nowhere. Only the Shadow knows… (

Orange Blossom Hills

HUGE Villages Vintage Car Club Show

Today is the last day!

Last Friday, February 19, Bruce Mensinga, John Farr, along with John’s friends Harold Grobe and Ralph DePalma had breakfast at Perkins and then carpooled to Zephyrhills to check out the show.

And were we impressed! [pic]

Speedsters among 80+ race cars

Vintage races all day long

Hundreds of cars for sale in corral area; and more cars in auction area. Hundreds of old car part booths food vendors, etc.

Smith & Jones was there with

Model T parts. Coker Tire had a big display. Many smaller vendors had old car parts, too.

Weather was the best in a long time, with temperatures around 70 degrees and no wind. We took our time, moseying throughout the rows and rows of eye candy.

We spent a long time sitting and relaxing in the bleachers, basking in the sun and waiting for the races to begin. We met a character named Monroe, who maintained the dirt track. He confided that cow droppings are included in the dirt surface, since the area is used for grazing when not in use as a race track.

We were permitted into the infield to examine the race cars and talk to the drivers. Our collective knowledge is impressive. Bruce befriended a Model T speedster owner from Sarasota who said he learned more from Bruce in that conversation than he knew in the 15 years he owned the car. Below is the owner discussing things with John: [pic]

Three of us cancelled our golf games to go to Zephyrhills – and we were glad we did!

The next Z-Hills 4 day event will be in the Fall and I hope we can get a larger contingent of TLC’ers to join us.

The Holzmanns are Back!

Bill and Ingeborg Holzmann returned last week from a visit with daughter Iris in frigid IL. “It feels so good to be back,” said Inga.

Bill celebrated by immediately going on a ride in his 1914 open huckster with his son-in-law, Jose at the wheel. While in IL Bill touched base with some old Model T friends from the MTFCI Midwest Chapter, and bought a few add-ons for his “T.”

A day of prizes, trophies, camaraderie

I attended this event last year and had a great time. This year it was held on Saturday, February 13. OBH is a senior community on the west side of US441 about a mile north of SR42. The show is a once-a-year fund raiser for the Community Patrol volunteers of OBH, created years ago after some crimes were committed against residents.

Cars are right on US441 and attract a lot of passers-by.

The OBH Community Center is the focal point, with food, beverages, and a small flea market, a bake sale – all for us.

For $20 you will receive a trophy, a door prize, 50/50, make new friends and have a great time while supporting a worthy local fundraiser.

Unfortunately, you’ll have a year to wait before you can enjoy their day. (

Reporters Wanted

Let’s cover all events

We need your help! There are so many collector car venues in this area, it is impossible for one or two people to cover all of them. If you attend a show, bring a digital camera and take a few shots that capture the moment. Then forward the pictures with some comments to me and we’ll share with members who could not be there.

This information may well encourage readers to try (or not try) a particular event in the future. (

Cruise to Nowhere

Sumter Swap Meet

There are two!

There is the three day Annual Swap Meet and Car Show Extravaganza (this year it was February 12-14. 60-70,000 people attend and it is always a lot of fun! Jim Collop sets up a tent and table to sell car parts, cars, etc. Next year he’ll make sure John gives better advance notice.

The smaller monthly Swap Meet and Car Show takes place every month on the first Sunday of every month. This is also a lot of fun.

LET’S GO!

Let’s get those cars on the road!

We started this Club to give us a way to enjoy each other’s company, while sharing our common interest in classic cars. Our cars should not be hidden in a garage, but shared with the world!

This newsletter will cover some of many upcoming events available to collector car hobbyists. Think about bringing your car to one or more in the next month.

If you go to any of these events, make it a habit to RSVP me to let me know whether or not we have a presence at an event.

And bring a camera, take some pictures and share the fun with fellow Club Members! (

At February’s TLC meeting Bobb Partridge submitted several nametag designs. Members selected one which included the Club’s Logo and member’s first name. They will be in a durable plastic sleeve with a clip-type fastener, which was preferred over the magnet-type. (
