Classification of Living Things

Part I

Refer to Figure 18-12 on page 459 in your dragonfly classroom text to answer the following questions.

1. Assume you are a biologist and that you have just discovered an unclassified species. The organism makes its own food, has no nucleus, and has peptidoglycan in its cell walls.

In which domain would you classify this species?

In which kingdom does it belong?

2. Archaea are the most ancient organisms on Earth and they exist in extreme environments.

What explains the ability of Archaea to live in extreme environments?

3. What characteristics distinguish members of the domain Bacteria from members of the domain Archaea?

4. How many cells do Archaea have?

5. What makes Fungi different from Protists?

6. What sets Animalia apart from all other kingdoms of organisms?

7. Which kingdom contains some species that share characteristics with Plantae? Explain.

Part II

Refer to Figure 18-13 Page 460 – 461 in your classroom text to create your own diagram of the Domains and Kingdoms. Be sure to include:

• Labels for the Domains

• A key for the Kingdoms

• Pictures of the various organisms just like in the text

You may use this paper or another for your diagram. If you need more space you can tape two pieces of paper together, but you can create a different scale so you can fit it on one sheet of paper. Also, answer the following question.

1. Which domain includes organisms from more than one kingdom?
