LITERACY AND LANGUAGE FOCUS

SUGGESTED PROCEDURE

Car ads

• Set the context of small ads. Elicit where we find them e.g. online, local newspapers, national classified ads papers, shop windows, supermarket notice boards etc.

• Find out who has bought or sold anything using small ads and get more information about this e.g. what they bought/ sold, whether it was a straightforward process, whether they were happy with their purchase or happy with the price they got for the item etc.

• Give each pair/ group a copy of Buying and running a car: Unit 1 Activity 3a Car ads.

• Ask learners to compare the four ads and answer the following questions:

1. Where is each ad from?

2. What are the similarities between the ads?

3. What are main differences between the ads?

4. Which abbreviations do you understand?

5. Which ad did you prefer in terms of style and content and why?

6. Which one would you feel most confidence buying from and why?

• Whole group discussion comparing answers and other issues relevant to car adverts. Make sure you cover the following:

– How much information is given about each car

– The order of information

– The length of the ad

– Whether or not a photo was included

– What the abbreviations mean and how much they were used

– What you would do next now you have seen the ad (e.g. check price in a buyer’s guide before phoning seller etc.)

– The fact that ‘one careful owner’ can actually mean that it’s an ex-rental car. While none of the examples in this activity use this particular phrase, it is useful to have a discussion around the kind of language car adverts use and why.

Car ad abbreviations

• Explain to learners that there are a lot of frequently used car ad abbreviations. Give each pair a copy of either Buying and running a car: Unit 1 Activity 3a Car ad abbreviations A or B.

• Ask each pair/ group to work together to try and guess/ find out/ answer the correct meaning for each abbreviation on their sheet. Learners can use a variety of reference sources including, for example, buyer’s guides and the internet. Alternatively this can be undertaken as a quiz with no reference sources provided and learners have to guess the meanings.

• At this stage it is important that learners do not compare answers with pairs/ groups with the other lettered sheet.

• When learners are ready, regroup into pairs with one A and one B working together. Learners now take it in turns to tell each other their answers for each abbreviation and confirm/ correct as appropriate.

• Depending on the level of the learners and the time available, give learners a copy of Buying and running a car: Unit 1 Activity 3c Car ad abbreviations answers.

Ideas for Level 2 and/ or extension activities

Learners use pictures of cars from the internet, magazines etc and write their own small ad for the car. Display the ads and learners can all

choose one to buy giving their reasons for their choice.
