Lesson Topic and Text: David Becomes King II Samuel 2-5

1. David was anointed by Samuel while Saul was King

2. David would be 2nd King over the Israelites

3. David was a man after God’s own heart, listened & obeyed God

4. Men of Judah anointed David as King, later the rest of Israel anointed him

5. Abner wanted Saul’s son, Ishbosheth to be King, made him one over Israel, but this was not what God wanted. Abner tried to fight against David, but David’s army led by Joab, won

6. There was a long war between David’s family and the family of Saul, but David became stronger and Saul’s family became weaker

7. Abner finally sees David as King and tries to get the rest of Israel to anoint David. Abner is killed by Joab.

II Samuel 6:1-15 & II Samuel 7

1. David decides to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem

2. God gave certain instructions on how to move the Ark

3. David and others had not read the instructions and he planned to put the Ark on a wagon pulled by oxen

4. Uzza touches the Ark as the oxen stumble and Uzza dies immediately

5. David becomes afraid and leaves the Ark with Obed-Edom

6. David prays and reads the scriptures and found out how God wanted the Ark to be moved

7. David again tries to bring the Ark to Jerusalem and places it in the Tabernacle

8. David and others praise God and celebrate

9. God tells David of His promise to bless David and his family

Lesson Topic and Text: Solomon builds the Temple I Kings 5-8

1. King David wanted to build a beautiful new “house” for the Lord.

2. God did not want David to build it, but his son, Solomon

3. King David gathered materials and made plans for the new Temple and gave them to Solomon

4. When Solomon became king, he began work on the Temple

5. He asked King Hiram, of Tyre, for wood

6. King Solomon also had men dig great stones out of the ground and cut them for the foundation of the temple

7. It took thousands of men to build the Temple and it took 7 years to build it

8. When it was finished Solomon called all the men of Israel to come and they placed the Ark of the Covenant and other furniture in the Temple.

9. God’s presence filled the temple with a cloud and all the people knew God was pleased with the house Solomon built

6. Elijah told Ahab there would be no rain or dew on the ground until he said.

7. God told Elijah to leave from there and go to a brook where he would have water to drink.

10. God sent ravens morning and night to feed Elijah bread and meat.

1. The brook God sent Elijah to dried up

2. God instructed Elijah to go to Zarephath, where he would find a widow who would give him food.

3. Elijah did as God instructed and traveled to Zarephath.

4. At the gate he found a woman gathering sticks and he asked the woman for water and for bread.

6. The widow stated she only had enough flour and oil to make her and her son one more cake.

7. Elijah instructed her to go and make him a small piece of bread first, and then she would have enough to make bread for her and her son until the famine was over.

8. The widow did as she was told and the Lord gave her just enough flour and oil each time she needed to make bread.

9. One day the widow’s son became ill and died.

10. Elijah took the boy and prayed three times to the Lord to bring the boy back to life.

11. God heard Elijah’s prayers and Elijah picked up the boy and told the woman her boy was alive.

12. The widow truly believed that Elijah was a man of God and that the words he spoke were true.

Lesson Topic and Text: God Answers Elijah’s Prayers I Kings 18

1. God instructed Elijah to go and tell King Ahab that it was going to rain.

2. On his journey, Elijah was reminded of the wicked ways of the people, worshiping idols

3. Elijah knew the importance of trying to get the people to turn back to God

4. Elijah was met by King Ahab’s servant, Obadiah, who was a man of God

6. Elijah told Obadiah to get King Ahab

7. King Ahab blamed all the trouble in the land on Elijah, but Elijah told him that it was their evil ways that had caused the trouble

8. Elijah told King Ahab to get the prophets of Baal and the people and go to Mt. Carmel

9. At Mt. Carmel, Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to call on their god to bring fire to their sacrifice, then Elijah would prepare a sacrifice and call on the Lord to bring fire, which ever God sent fire would be the true Lord and God

10. The prophets of Baal called out to Baal and danced around their altar all day and no fire came

11. Elijah prepared his sacrifice, even having water poured on it. He prayed to God and God sent fire from heaven which burnt up the sacrifice.

12. The people knew the Lord God of Israel was the one true God.

13. Elijah told Ahab to go to the top of the mountain and eat and drink because the rain was coming.

14. Elijah went and prayed to God seven times to bring the rain. After the seventh prayer, a rain cloud formed over the seas. Elijah knew God had heard his prayers.

15. God gave Elijah the strength and speed to run a head of King Ahab’s chariot all the way in to town.

1. Elisha was now the prophet in Israel.

2. The people of Israel would go to Elisha when they had problems.

3. A widow woman was very poor and did not have enough money to care for herself or her sons.

4. The woman went to Elisha and asked for help.

5. The woman believed in God, and trusted Elisha and God to help her.

6. Elisha told the woman to go and borrow as many pots as she could and fill them with her oil.

7. The woman did as Elisha said, and even though she only had one pot of oil, she was able to fill all the pots she had borrowed.

8. Elisha told the woman to sell all the extra pots of oil and use the money to pay her bills. She would also have money left over to take care of herself and her sons.

Lesson Topic and Text: God Heals Naaman II Kings 5:1-19

A. Lesson Content (the facts/stories that will be covered in this lesson)

1. The Syrians worshiped an idol, Rimmon.

2. A slave girl from Israel, worked for the captain of the Syrian army, Naaman.

3. Captain Naaman had a disease, leprosy.

4. The slave girl told them of the prophet Elisha, who could help heal Naaman.

5. The King of Syria sent Naaman to the King of Israel, to be healed.

6. The King of Israel could not heal Naaman, he sent him to Elisha.

7. Elisha sent his servant out to tell Naaman to go wash in the Jordan River, seven times.

8. Naaman was angry because he didn’t want to go and wash in the muddy Jordan River so he started back to Syria.

9. Naaman’s servants talked to him and told him he should obey Elisha and do this simple thing.

10. Naaman went back and washed seven times in the river and he was healed.

11. Naaman now believed in the one true God and tried to pay Elisha for healing him.

12. Elisha would not take the payment because it was God who healed Naaman. He asked Naaman to go and tell everyone in Syria about the one true God.

Lesson Topic and Text: God Protects Elisha II Kings 6:8-23

NOTE: Please keep in mind the “Old Testament objectives” as you prepare your lesson plan.

A. Lesson Content (the facts/stories that will be covered in this lesson)

1. The king of Syria wanted to capture all of Israel.

2. The king of Syria tried to capture different cities, but each time, the king of Israel had the cities guarded and drove the Syrians away.

3. The king of Syria accused his men of telling King Jehoram, his secrets.

4. One soldier told the king that it was not any of them, but the prophet Elisha was telling King Jehoram where they were going to attack.

5. The king of Syria told his men to find where Elisha was, so he could take Elisha as a prisoner.

6. The men found Elisha in Dothan, so the king sent a large army to capture Elisha.

7. Elisha’s servant was scared when he saw the soldiers from Syria. Elisha told him to not be afraid because there were more of them than the Syrian army.

8. His servant could not understand, Elisha prayed to God to let his servant see, and the servant then saw many horses and chariots of fire to protect Elisha. The servant knew God was caring for them.

9. When the Syrian army reached Elisha, they became blind. Elisha went down to them and told them to follow him, he would take them to the man they wanted.

10. Elisha led the army in Samaria, to King Jehoram, and prayed for God to open their eyes. The army saw that they were in Jehoram’s city and were afraid.

11. Elisha told King Jehoram to feed the men and then let them go back to Syria. The Syrians never tried to harm Elisha again.
