Algebra 1 Description from WCS High School Course Guide

COURSE ID: HS1601 / HS1602

This one-year college preparatory course will help students to view algebra not only as a theoretical tool for analyzing and describing mathematical relationships, but they will also experience the power of algebraic thinking in a context of applications by studying the mathematical modeling of real world problems. The course content will include a rigorous approach to solving, graphing, and writing linear quadratic, rational, and exponential functions.

Geometry Description from WCS High School Course Guide

COURSE ID: HS1611/HS1612

This is a one-year college preparatory geometry course studying geometric concepts from an algebraic perspective.

Included in this course is a study of both two and three dimensional shapes, congruence, similarity, transformations

and the relationships between geometric shapes. Recommendation: Satisfactory completion of Algebra 1

|WCS Grading Scale |

|The following grading policy has been developed based on newly adopted Warren Consolidated Schools Grading Policy changes. |

|Semester Grades |

|40 % of Quarter 1 + 40% of Quarter 2 + 20 % of Final Exam = Final Semester Course Grade |

|98-100% = A+ |87-89% = B+ |77-79% = C+ |67-69% = D+ |No credit earned: |

|93-97% = A |83-86% = B |73-76% = C |63-66% = D |50-59% = E |

|90-92% = A- |80-82% = B- |70-72% = C- |60-62% = D- |0- 49% = F |

|Quarter Grade Calculations |

|Quarterly Grades will be calculated using the following weighted categories. |

|45% | Tests and Quizzes are the primary method for determining the level of mastery within the Algebra1/Geometry course. This category is|

|Tests |considered a type of summative assessment and is the most heavily weighted category in the students overall grade determination. Students|

| |must earn a passing average on tests in order to guarantee a passing grade in the course. Stay current with the material being covered. |

| |Do not wait until the last minute to study. (Students must earn at least a passing average on tests in order to pass the quarter.) |

|Summative | |

|Assessments | |

|5 % | This category is considered a type of observational assessment. Participation will be given at the end of the card-making and will |

|Notes, Skills, & |demonstrate the extent to which students are involved in the classroom learning, Participation points will be deducted for students who |

|Participation |fail to follow the classroom expectations, such as not taking notes, not being prepared for class, tardiness, etc. |

|Assessments | |

|20% | Homework will be given every day. Homework and practice tasks are designed to help the student master new concepts in math. Failure|

|Homework |to turn in assignments will do great harm to your grades. |

| |Assignments are worth 10 points. |

| |No credit is given if your assignment contains answers only, work must be shown, |

| |Assignments must labeled with your name, date, class (Geometry/Algebra1), The assignment section, and problem numbers |

| |Assignments must be done in pencil, neatness counts |

| |Late assignment will not be accepted |

Dear parent/ guardian,

I would like to introduce myself as your son/daughter's mathematics teacher for at least the first semester of the 2013-2014 school year. I am looking forward to a great year with your child, should you have any questions or concerns throughout the semester please feel free to contact me by email forow@ or phone(586) 825-2700 Ext. 14511

Math is a challenging course that requires a strong work ethic from students. It is imperative that students continuously review and study material, and avoid cramming for tests. Please take a few moments to review the classroom guidelines and you will see the demand students must put into class assignments and especially preparing for tests.

Please take advantage of the Parent Portal online program, available at , to monitor your student’s progress throughout the semester. Also, be sure to check out the Sterling Heights Website for teacher lesson plans and school information. My class page may be found directly at: mrsorowclass.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Orow

I (the student) have received a copy of Mrs. Orow’s rules and expectations, and I have read, understood, and discussed these rules with my parent(s)/guardian(s).
