Classroom Rules and Layout

Rules and procedures are essential in our everyday life. We follow rules and procedures in our daily lives for things such as approaching a traffic light, starting a car and driving, or even getting ready in the morning. Just as there are rules and procedures in our everyday lives, there are rules and procedures in this classroom. These rules and procedures support a positive atmosphere in the classroom and contribute to a healthy and effective learning environment for everyone.

It is also important to have and establish a classroom routine that the students can follow to help not waste precious time for learning. As a teacher you have to plan on spending a lot of time teaching your classroom procedures, practicing them with your students, and reinforcing them during the first few weeks of school. In addition, it will be helpful to the students to post your procedures in a noticeable place. This is a good way to remind students of how things are done in your classroom.

Classroom procedures are as follow:

Before the tardy bell rings:

1. Place your homework and other assignments due in their designated pile on the “homework” desk next to the door.

When the tardy bell rings:

2. Be seated and ready to work quietly.

3. Begin the opening activity (directions are on the board/overhead projector each day) while the teacher takes attendance.

4. If finished with activity wait quietly for further instruction from the teacher's.

When the dismissal bell rings . . .

5. At the sound of the bell, close your books, stop working, and clean up your workspace.

6. Stay in your seat until you hear the teacher dismiss you.

7. Leave quietly and in an orderly manner.
