Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to an exciting year of Tapp Chorus!

I can hardly wait to get started! To my returning choristers, I hope you had a restful summer. To all new students, I am so pleased to have you as a part of the choral program, and I look forward to getting to know you all.

I know that we have a number of new outstanding singers joining us, and I hope that as we work together, the choral program at Tapp will continue to inspire exceptional young musicians. If you have one year left at Tapp or three years, I hope that you will have experiences in chorus that you will always remember.

Parents, please read through the Choral Handbook with your child and make note of this year’s various performance dates, classroom policies, and procedures, as they may have changed slightly since last year. You will find a form on the last page of your Handbook. Please complete and sign the form, and have your child bring it back by the designated due date. Keep the Handbook at home for your reference.

Chorus Syllabus and Guidelines

This syllabus is a guide and is subject to change to accommodate the class and the individual needs.

Purpose

The purpose of middle school chorus is to teach students music through vocal performance by learning the fundamentals of singing and music literacy. Each student can expect to gain a lifelong interest in singing and an appreciation of music as an art form. Singing in the chorus also helps improve mental discipline and enhance social interaction. A sense of teamwork and pride is developed through chorus.

Goals and Objectives

Each student’s skill, enjoyment and understanding of vocal music will be enhanced through active involvement in a singing ensemble. Each of the following elements is taught on a daily basis, and skills are built through continuous practice.

Performing Ensembles

o 8th Grade Chorus

This ensemble is open to all 8th grade students and focuses on more challenging repertoire and performance opportunities for vocal development, high school preparation, and music literacy.

o 7th Grade Chorus

This ensemble is open to all 7th grade students and focuses on intermediate repertoire and performance opportunities for vocal development and music literacy.

o 6th Grade Chorus

This ensemble is open to all 6th grade students and focuses on beginning repertoire and performance opportunities for vocal development and music literacy.

Information regarding Honor Chorus, Allstate, and the Spring Musical will be available shortly.

Grading Procedures

Please note the grade weights below. All “assignments” and skills practices are based on the Georgia Performance Standards for Choral Music. More information about the various forms of assessment can be found below. Students will be graded on a four point scale. This four point scale was adapted for the chorus class specifically, based on Robert Marzano’s research, but adapted to function within the CCSD grading scale.

Daily Practice of Skills

This grade is determined by the student’s ability to do the following:

o Perform skills designed for choral students in the GPS

o Be in the proper place at the proper time with all necessary materials.

o Follow all instructions given during the rehearsal.

o Follow all classroom and school-wide rules.

o Take care of assigned school-owned music, texts, and use correct pencil markings in rehearsal.

o Participate in all scheduled performances or complete a relevant make-up assignment.

o Most importantly, perform or demonstrate the choral standards to the best of their ability.

In-Class Written Assignments

o This includes any written in-class work that is not a test. This grade is mostly based on Chorus Workbooks and worksheets, and these will be kept in the student’s chorus folder. We will be spending five to ten minutes per class period doing written work in music theory, history, and vocal study. In related written assignments, students will also respond to specific thought provoking questions and listening examples that are relevant to our area of study. Chorus Workbooks and worksheets will be graded for completeness and effort in alignment with the ‘Georgia Performance Standards in Chorus’.

Homework

o Students will rarely be given homework in chorus, but all students must return all communication with parents by the appropriate due dates. This is essential for our program to run smoothly. In addition, any written assignments must be complete by the appropriate due date.

Tests

o Tests will include theory quizzes, dictation, and singing tests.

Behavior Expectations and Conduct

In order for chorus to be a worthwhile and productive experience for all students, we have to have the cooperation of all students. We will sing, dance, move about, learn and explore all kinds of music this year. However, this can certainly be done in an orderly fashion. If a student has a disagreement with someone, that student should speak to the teacher privately so that the whole class will not be disturbed.

Disrespect towards the teacher and/or other students will NOT be tolerated.

Class Rules:

o Arrive on time, and sit in your assigned seat.

o Have only your chorus folder, sight singing book, workbook and a pencil at your seat.

o Participate in the learning.

o NO food, gum, or drink. (H2O is acceptable)

o Restroom passes are for emergencies only.

o No sidebar conversations.

Discipline Plan (This is identical to the School-wide Behavior Plan):

o 1st Offense: Verbal Warning

o 2nd Offense: Parent Contact-Silent Lunch

o 3rd Offense: Parent Contact- Detention

o 4th Offense: Phone Contact- In-Pod Isolation

o 5th Offense: Office referral-student may be removed from Chorus

o 6th Offense: Parent Conference

Even teachers have planned restroom breaks; so emergency restroom passes should be very few. If a student has a medical condition that would require frequent trips to the restroom, please write a letter to the school nurse, and she will administer a special pass for your child.

Students in chorus must additionally follow all the rules of Tapp Middle School and Cobb County Public Schools at all times while participating in the ensembles. Tapp Middle School is on a school wide discipline plan and the same policies and procedures apply to field trips, off property performances, and before/after school activities.

So that I may keep all parents/guardians well informed, please make sure I have accurate phone numbers and email addresses. Thank you for your cooperation.

Attendance at Performances

The importance of your child attending each concert cannot be stressed enough. Each member is a vital part of the team, and if a student is missing, the whole group suffers. Your child has chosen to be a part of a performing organization. It is unfair for a child to work diligently for weeks or months to learn their music and then not be able to perform it at the concert. Only extreme illness or a death in the family is an excuse for missing a performance.

Make-up work will be allowed for students who miss concerts, but a written note from a parent/guardian is required. Please refer to the attached performance schedule when booking medical/dental appointments, vacations, etc. Should you have an emergency, please contact Ms. Hemmings as soon as possible.

Concert Make-Up Work

If a student must miss a concert, he/she may either:

o Accurately sing and record a track of all concert pieces solo, their assigned part, as a grade.

o Write a two-page, double-spaced report on a music-related topic, relevant to our concert repertoire, and have it pre-approved by Ms. Hemmings.

Make-Up Work and Tutoring

According to school policy, students may have a day for each absence plus one day to make up any work. Tutoring is available for students on Wednesday afternoons from 4:20-5pm.

Commitment

We are hoping that your child will make a three-year commitment to the chorus program. Success for the music student is dependant on repetition of skills and techniques over time. If and when a chorus student decides with his/her parents that he or she no longer wishes to continue in the choral program, a note from the guardian must be written to the choral director, and your request will be considered.

Uniforms

Concert attire is very important to the uniformity and image of any ensemble. Please make sure your student has the proper concert attire before our first concert (October 14th). Wearing perfume or cologne at a concert or dress rehearsal is strictly prohibited, because these can have adverse effects on those singers with allergies.

Transportation

Students participating in chorus will have performances and rehearsals that require them to have transportation outside of the standard school hours. The parent is responsible for getting the student to and from these rehearsals and performances. Those arrangements should be made before the day of the event, and students should not rely on using the choral office phone for these purposes. The schedule for any “extra” rehearsals or events will be published and sent home to the parent/guardian for signatures weeks before the events occur.

Except for the Spring Musical, the above listed events are sponsored by the Georgia Music Educator’s Association (GMEA) and are voluntary, requiring attendance at special, off-campus rehearsals and performances, auditioning, special fees, and transportation. Students who wish to participate must fill out registration forms and have all registration materials/fees turned in by specified dates. Letters outlining the dates, times, and other information will be sent home for interested students.

Additional Information

Fundraising

The Chorus will participate in fundraising for the betterment of our program. Fundraisers will be organized according to need. All monies will contribute to expenditures for field trips, additional equipment/music, Camp/Instructional Clinicians, Festival Fees, student recognition, and uniform accessories.

High School Registration

Tapp Middle School Chorus feeds into the McEachern High School Choral Program. All 8th grade students can register for chorus in high school. Students wishing to be placed in advanced high school ensembles should see Mr. Meyer for advisement, and he should be visiting Tapp periodically.

Pebblebrook High School Center for Excellence in Performing Arts

P.H.S is home to the Cobb County Center for Excellence in Performing Arts. This program includes studies in vocal music, dance and drama. Auditions take place in the 8th grade. Ms. Hemmings can request performance tickets for interested students and parents. See the CCCEPA website for shows, concerts, dates, and times. ()
