Teachers and parents work together in helping students to appreciate mathematics, to grow more proficient mathematically, and to realize that mathematical skills are stepping stones to success. Mathematics instruction must continue to grow to meet the changing demands of our society. Literacy in Mathematics requires understandings and habits of mind that enables citizens to make sense of our world, to think critically and independently, to recognize and weigh alternative explanations, and to deal reasonably with problems that involve numbers, patterns, and logical arguments.Course Description: Algebra I is the first course in a sequence of three required high school courses designed to ensure career and college readiness. The course represents a discrete study of algebra with correlated statistics applications. The standards in the three-course high school sequence specify the mathematics that all students should study in order to be college and career ready. Additional mathematics content is provided in fourth credit courses and advanced courses including pre-calculus, calculus, advanced statistics, discrete mathematics, and mathematics of finance courses. High school course content standards are listed by conceptual categories including Number and Quantity, Algebra, Functions, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Conceptual categories portray a coherent view of high school mathematics content; a student’s work with functions, for example, crosses a number of traditional course boundaries, potentially up through and including calculus. Standards for Mathematical Practice provide the foundation for instruction and assessment. Students must attend class on time and on a regular basis. 2. Students are expected to be seated on time and remain seated. 3. Students must follow directions, remain attentive, participate in class discussion, and complete assigned tasks on time. 4. Students must be respectful and courteous. 5. Students are required to bring their binder, composition book, calculator, and pencil to class every day. Students must maintain a binder consisting of the course syllabus, curriculum map, assignments, quizzes, projects and test by unit. Students must also maintain a composition book consisting of all math notes. Course Evaluation CategoriesGrades will be assigned based on the following percentages: Classwork/Participation- 25% Tests - 20%Quizzes - 10% Homework – 15%Projects – 10%Semester Final Exam/EOC – 20%Required Materials/Supplies (Material will be needed in class immediately, but no later than by 8/17)(1) 100 sheet pack of loose-leaf paperComposition Notebook(1) 3-inch binderBinder index dividers (a pack of at least 6 tabs)Pencils and ErasersCalculator TI-30XS (required) or either TI-83 or TI-84 (highly recommended)Calculators on phones will be prohibitedClassroom Rules 1. Respect teacher and classmates.3. Listen for and adhere to all directions the first time they are given.4. Respect the classroom and other school property.5. Do not ask to leave the classroom for any reason other than a true emergency.*Students must adhere to the student handbook at all timesBehavior Expectations1. Come prepared for class every day.2. Complete all work in a timely manner.3. Use the time I give you in class wisely. 4. Ask questions if you do not understand something.5. Maintain a positive and respectful attitude.Consequences1. Verbal warning2. Teacher/Student Conferences3. Call Parents4. Office referral* The teacher reserves the right to deviate from this protocol in extreme or unusual circumstances.Detention: Detention will be held from 4:10pm in Room T-417 on the assigned date(s). You should arrive promptly and have work to complete. Failure to report to detention will result in a referral to an administrator. If you have a conflict with the dates assigned, please see me prior to your assigned date(s).Class PoliciesLate Assignments: Each student is expected to complete all assignments in the allotted time. Late assignments are penalized, minus 10 points (a letter grade), each day the assignment is late, unless due to absence.Make-up Policy: IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO OBTAIN AND COMPLETE MAKE-UP WORK. If you have an excused absence, you will be allowed the same number of days as your absence in order to make up work missed. Missed assignments must be arranged for and made up/submitted or a grade of zero will be assigned for all the missing work. Discussions of and arrangements for make-up work must be coordinated with me before or after class, NOT during valuable class time. Additionally, make-up work must be completed before or after school, NOT during valuable class time. With regard to make-up work, the following procedures will be implemented:For make-up of tests or quizzes for which the student had prior knowledge of, the test or quiz will be taken in class on the day of return. For daily homework assignments that have not been graded and returned to all students, make-up work may be done at home and turned in for credit. If an assignment has been collected, graded, and returned to all students, missing daily homework assignments must be completed in my presence after school. Test FailuresAny student who fails a test will be given an opportunity for a re-test. Failing students must see me within THREE days of their test being returned. Then, we will work together during an after-school tutoring session where we will discuss the missed questions. Only after this tutoring session will the student be given an alternate test. I will then average the two test grades to find the replacement test grade. The highest replacement test grade a student can earn is an 80.Cheating PolicyBlatant cheating on assignments will not be tolerated. This includes copying other student’s work (including HW), having the exact content of another student’s work for multiple problems, possessing another student’s work, submitting another student’s work as your own, or assisting others in cheating. During tests and quiz situations, students should refrain from looking anywhere other than down at the test paper. A grade of zero will be assigned as a consequence for all cheating incidences and for both parties involved, when the case warrants.Student Assistance/TutorialEach student may seek individualized assistance on Monday or Wednesday afternoon from 4:00 – 4:30. If students are not in the room by 4:15 I will assume no one is coming and might not be in the classroom after that. If this tutorial day/time does not work, please come see me to schedule a different municationIf you wish to contact me, please e-mail me at any time. I will answer e-mails within 24-hours unless there are dire circumstances. If you desire a parent conference, you will need to schedule it through the school counseling office.Grades are accessible through Infinite Campus. It is recommended that you monitor Infinite Campus** () on a regular basis.**In Infinite Campus, parents can create their own username and password to access students in their household using the steps below. You will need the Student ID, Birthdate, and SSN?of one student in the household in order to get an Activation Key to create a profile.
