Installation / Configuration Instructions
Product: Symantec Ghost Solution Suite 2.5
Version: GhostCast Server 11.5
Subject: Cloning Windows 7 Machines
Materials
Required: Symantec Ghost Solution Suite 2.5, licenses for each client
that will receive the image, the Administrator’s password and a USB bootable device
Skill Level
Required: Advanced
General Theory:
This document contains step-by-step instructions to install the Ghostcast 11.5 server software, create a bootable USB device, create a Windows 7 image, and the process of using the Ghostcast 11.5 server to broadcast a Windows 7 image to multiple clients simultaneously. Note: A license must be assigned for each machine being imaged. To request a license, please access the Network Integration web site at: . Click on the “Ghost License Request” link in the “Forms and Downloads” section. Fill in the requested information, then click the “Print Form” button in the top right corner of the document, and send it to David Weaver, at ETS, via the pony system.
Ensure the target/client workstation(s) is fully functional including networking components. Make sure the target workstation is connected to the same network segment that the host server/workstation is connected.
Warning: You must use Ghost 11.5 to make a Windows 7 image. Ghost 8 will not work correctly with Windows 7. Also, “Ghostwalker” cannot be used on Windows 7 to reset the SID, because it will corrupt the registry. You must use “sysprep” to change the SID. It is strongly advised that you make a Windows 7 image before you run “sysprep”. If you run “sysprep” on Windows 7 before you make a backup image, you will only be able to run “sysprep” on that machine 2 more times, (a total of 3), before it permanently disables the “Authentication”, and it will run as a “Non-Licensed” copy from then on. Also, you should not install “DeepFreeze” on the Windows 7 machines. Instead, use “Group Policies” for security. Finally, Windows 7 cannot be added to an NT domain. It must be added to the “Browardschools.local” domain.
Detailed Instructions:
1. Pre-installation preparation. After you have filled out the request form and sent it to ETS, the username and password will be sent to you so you can download the software from the “Servicedesk” server. If Ghost 8 is on the server or workstation that you wish to put Ghost 11.5 on, you must uninstall Ghost 8 before you continue. Ghost 11.5 can be used to push out existing 8 images.
2. Installing the Symantec Ghostcast 11.5 Server. This must be performed on a Windows machine. You can use either an NT/2000/2003 server, or a Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7 workstation or laptop.
1. After you download the “Symantec_Ghost_Solution_Suite_2.5_AllWin_EN.exe” file, move it to the machine you wish to install Ghost 11.5 on.
2. Double click the file to start the installation of the Ghost 11.5 Server software.
3. Click “Install”.
4. Click “Next”.
5. Click “Next”.
6. Click “Install”.
7. Click “Finish”.
3. Create Ghostcast 11.5 Bootable USB drives.
1. Obtain the “Bootable USB” program from the Servicedesk server. Click the “Start” menu, and click “Run”. Type \\servicedesk\Windows and press Enter. If prompted for an account and password, type “browardschools\P########” as the username, (with P######## being your Personnel Number) and the password associated with it. Navigate to “Applications”, and then “Ghost”, and download the “HP BootableUSB” folder.
2. Insert a USB device to be made bootable.
3. In the folder you just downloaded, double click the “SP27608.exe” file. It will install an application called “HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”. Run the program.
4. Select the “Quick Format” and “Create a DOS Startup Disk” options.
5. Click the three dots “…” next to the empty box, and navigate to the “Floppy Boot Sys Files” folder you downloaded.
6. Click “Start”. NOTE: The device will be formatted, so if there is anything you wish to keep, copy it off before you proceed.
7. After it has finished, eject the disk.
8. Put the key back in and copy all files in the “Ghost 11_5 Files” folder to the key.
9. There will be three files that are already on the USB key, and you will be asked if you wish to overwrite with new files, select “No”.
10. To change the type of card to be booted to, double click the batch file on the key that matches the card type. NOTE: The batch files start with “GO” and then have the card type at the end. EX: GO57.bat for the Broadcom 57 card, GO1000.bat for the Intel E1000 card.)
4. Create a Ghost folder on the C: drive.
1. Double-click C:
2. Select File/New/Folder.
3. Name the folder “Ghost” or “Images”, or whatever you wish.
4. Close the C: window.
5. Install all the software on the workstation to be cloned. NOTE: This workstation must be set up exactly as you want all the workstations to appear.
1. If this machine is fresh out of the box, and has never been turned on, at the first prompt screen, press “Ctrl, Shift, F3”. This will place the computer in “Audit Mode”. If it has already been set up once, putting it in to Audit Mode now could cause problems, so just continue as is.
2. If a “Sysprep” window appears on startup, just close it.
3. Turn off “Force password on sleep”.
1. Click “Start”.
2. Click “Control Panel”.
3. Click “System & Security”.
4. Click “Power Options”.
5. Click “Require password on wakeup”.
6. Set to “Do Not Require Password”.
4. Set the TCP/IP and Client for Microsoft configurations to insure they are correctly configured.

2. Make sure you add the WINS addresses: (10.251.192.90, & 10.251.192.91).
5. Create a new user account for administrative access. This will be your only access to the computer after “Sysprep” is run. (Example: admin1234, where 1234 is your location number.)
6. Configure Browser (Internet Explorer and Firefox) with proxy configuration and set home page. (Use the MMC to create IE default settings.)
7. Install applicable print drivers and network options. This should include all printers that you wish to print to.
8. Install McAfee 8.8, and configure the scheduler and update the “DAT” files.[1]
9. Install all application and curriculum software. NOTE: Do not install Deepfreeze on the machine. You can use “Global Policies” for security in Windows 7.
10. Run all Windows updates, and software updates.
11. Clean up the desktop, start menu, and task bar.
12. Install “LANDesk”.
13. Download the “\\servicedesk\windows\Applications\Ghost\Windows 7” folder to a USB key.
14. Run the “Sysprep Hotfix” (Windows6.1-KB981542-x86.msu), located in the folder you just downloaded. Systems that have the update already will display a message stating that it is not needed.
15. If the computer is on the “Browardschools” domain, skip to step 5.16. If not, do so at this time so you can add the “Local Lan Admin” group to the local “Administrator” group.
