Your mercy is fresh every morning, O God; your ways are just and true. You cause the day to dawn with the promise of life everlasting; in Christ we learn of your will. Your Spirit surrounds us with wisdom and guidance; you do not forsake us when we seek your counsel. Be pleased as we praise you, and make haste to hear us, for we assemble to honor you, God of new life.

Call to Confession (8:55 a.m.)

Prayer of Confession - John 6

Holy Lord, you offer us the bread of heaven that provides eternal nourishment. Yet we seek a fast food diet of beliefs and practices that do not satisfy the hunger in our souls. Forgive us. Help us to rely on a feast that will last, a feast of justice, mercy, forgiveness, and love. Help us to walk away from meals of greed, comfort, convenience, and self reliance. Invite us, again and again, to feast at your abundant table, where there is room enough for all.

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

*Affirmation of Faith Darryl Baker

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,

And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. The Apostles’ Creed

*Passing of the Peace Darryl Baker

Minister: As Jesus offered himself to secure our peace with God, let us share that peace with one another. The peace of Christ be with you.

Pairs and Spares – The luncheon destination for the Pairs and Spares in August is the Olive Garden in Pigeon Forge. We leave the parking lot at noon on Thursday, August 23. Reservations, please by noon on the preceding Monday, 922-1522. Regulars will be contacted.

For the next few weeks we will be using the Common English Bible. It’s easier than any other Bible translation to read and understand. English words that were once readily understood by Bible readers even ten years ago, today may not carry the same meaning or context. Words such as “alas,” “alien,” and “ephod,” are more quickly grasped in the 21st century when they become “oh my!,” “immigrant,” and “priestly vest.” The Common English Bible is the only translation using terms you naturally speak—a common language.

It’s broader in its development than any other translation for greater trustworthiness. More than 700 people, including Bible scholars, pastors, and everyday readers, collaborated to make sure you can trust the CEB to accurately reflect the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek languages in which the Bible was originally written. The Common English Bible translation is academically rigorous and denominationally neutral because 120 translators from 24 denominations built it on common ground.
