Senior Citizen Council of Cobb County | KEEPING COBB ...

“Where Sharing Is Caring”Seniors are living longer requiring longer care. The senior population is expected to reach 98.2 million by 2060, doubling since 2015. (census) There are over 400 senior communities in Metro Atlanta area, with an average of about 100 – 300 seniors per community. Many (80%) are unable to independently shop for basic necessities, such as toiletries, cleaning supplies, water, basic and nutritional foods, and the like due to various barriers such as transportation, having someone to assist them, mobility problems, lack of disposable income, safety issues, and fear. The Deal Shack Foundation – “Where Sharing Is Caring”, brings the shopping to them where they reside, through unique partnerships at each community. With her own need to save money for her family, LaDonna Jones launched an idea to help others in 2011, especially those who are most vulnerable – the frail, low-income elderly, many disabled and unable to get out. Mrs. Jones uses her ongoing years of research on how to obtain the necessities of life at the lowest price possible, and, with the help of over 20 volunteers sets up Pop-Up Shops within each Senior Community. Residents arrive at the fellowship room in their facility and get the opportunity to purchase goods to meet their needs affording them the opportunity to remain as independent as possible in shopping for themselves. We have earned the name, A Little Bit of This, A Little Bit of That. The Pop-Up Shops are powerful providing great products at great prices. Not only do seniors save money at these shops, they save their facilities money in the long run as well in terms of the cost of transport for shopping outings, people to assist, gas, etc. It’s a strong and successful win for all. Currently the Deal Shack Foundation serves approximately 14 – 16 locations on a monthly basis. Service locations exist in the City of Atlanta, City of Decatur, Marietta and Smyrna. However, the Cobb locations have the advantage of being serviced bi-monthly. In the Cobb area our organization services over 300 residents. The Cobb service locations include The Retreat at Dorsey Manor (72 units), Towers at Dorsey Manor (81 units) and Smyrna Towers (150 units). The need for this programming to help seniors “age in place” and give them access to services infused into their communities, not only provides them with necessary goods and information, but enhances their sense of self-worth, dignity and independence. Deal Shack Foundation, - “Where Sharing Is Caring” is a 501c3 organization and welcomes any volunteers and donations.
