Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to second grade! It is always so exciting to come back to Franklin Park and we are looking forward to working together to make this a wonderful year!  Below are some important items that you need to be aware of.

Second grade is a big leap from first grade. Students will be building upon the strong foundation of skills they learned last year. To help you prepare for what’s being expected of your child as they start the new school year, below is a brief introduction to some of the different units of study we will cover in the first marking period.

❖ In math, your second grader will be learning addition and subtraction facts up to 20, place value, numbers in base-ten, comparing and ordering numbers, adding and subtracting with regrouping to 1,000, problem solving, and explaining their mathematical thinking.

❖ In writing, your child will use small moments to write. As you enjoy your summer, it would be helpful if your child journals the different experiences they have. They can also collect pictures, ticket stubs, postcards, and other items that may help them to recall specific places, trips, and moments they had. In September, we will add these into our Writer’s Notebooks and Writer’s Folder’s of ideas.

❖ Reading will focus on establishing the Reading Workshop model in the classroom. This involves listening to and discussing stories, selecting of just right books, and building a respectful reading community. Strategies include making connections, many ways to tackle tricky words and difficult parts of stories, and thinking about characters.

❖ Social Studies will introduce elements of geography skills including continents and oceans, direction, and map skills. Family and community are introduced as we explore structure, rules, routines, and collaboration.

❖ Science in the classroom collaborates with the Science Lab activities. Students will learn about weather, the water cycle, the Earth’s surface, and states of matter.

Homework reinforces skills taught in class. Although some days your child may need some help, for the most part it should be completed independently and then checked over by an adult. Your child is required to read every night in their just-right book for at least 15 minutes to begin the year. A reading log will be used to track this progress and is to be signed on a daily basis.  Establishing a daily homework routine and organizing a homework kit is extremely important. Your child should have the following materials organized and easily accessible at home:

• Pencils

• Erasers

• Crayons

• Scissors

• Glue

• Standard and metric ruler

School supplies are such an important part of ensuring that your child is prepared and organized each day. Each classroom has specific needed materials that will be addressed by your child’s classroom teacher. Here are some of the basic required items that you can pick up before school starts to be used throughout the year, regardless of whom your child’s teacher will be.
