Fisher Hill Cemetery As it was somewhat stated in the movie, “Miracle on 34th Street”, “Yes, Virginia (Barbara, Terry, and Maureen), there is a FISHER HILL CEMETERY!”It was questionably known that there was a small Fisher family cemetery located somewhere on the property located on the south west corner of Old River Road and Chagrin Blvd., now of Moreland Hills, Ohio. This property was originally of Orange Township, thus the Chagrin Falls address. It was originally owned by James Fisher. James Fisher was born 23 April 1792 in Stoughton, Massachusetts to his parents Abel Fisher and Deborah (White). His mother died 26 August 1802 in Canton, Mass. His father married Ruth Tilden in April 1803. On 19 August 1818, Abel moved his family to Newbury, Geauga County, Ohio, arriving 27 September 1818, 40 days later with two yoke of oxen and a covered wagon. He bought a 132-acre farm and built and ran a water powered sawmill on what was known as Punderson Pond.James married Mercy (Marcy) Litch of Orange, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio on 13 October 1822. He bought a large tract of land on 30 January 1823 and a smaller tract abutted his current acreage at the south end of his current property on 17 January 1826 (Ohio River Survey map T 14 R7). He was considered an Orange early pioneer. (US Indexed Early Land Ownership and Township Plats 1785 – 1898).James and Mercy had six children, all born on the farm in Orange Township, though had Chagrin Falls as listed address. Ebenezer White Fisher - 1823 – 1849Nathaniel Fisher – 1825 – 1826James Litch Fisher - 1827 – 1919Thomas Jefferson Fisher - 1832 – 1893Mary Fisher - 1832 – 1833Laura Fisher - 1833 – 1893James died 11 April 1834 at his farm in Orange. (If there was a will, it has not been located at this time.) The property was divided with his wife Mercy (Marcy) and some of their children, as shown on the 1852 map. James’ widow Mercy, married Nathan Blood Hobart 27 December 1837. They had two sons, Alonzo H. Hobart October 1838 – 6 April 1858, and Oliver Cromwell Hobart June 1843 – 1920. Mercy died in Chagrin Falls on 13 April 1849. Place of rest, unknown location. On the 1858 map, James L. Fisher had total ownership of the land. Between 1858 – 1860 James gave/sold Thomas Jefferson, his brother, the Fisher Homestead and property as James’ residence in 1860 was in Xenia, Clay Co., Illinois, then later moving to Missouri. The 1874 Historic Map shows Thomas Jefferson Fisher total ownership of 137+ acreage west of the Chagrin River. On the 1927 – 1937 Historic Map, B.L. Jenks owns the property, and the cemetery is marked on the map (just below the number 6).4429125-799465As Thomas Jefferson fought in the Civil War, he married Harriet Amelia Lovejoy on 13 May 1866, at the age of 35. They had two children, Ada May 1867 – 1930, and Willie James 10 December 1869 to 29 August 1870. Thomas Jefferson Fisher died 5 January 1893, leaving in his will the property divided between his wife Harriet and daughter Ada May. The T. J. Fisher family monument is in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, in Section 15, Lot 42, near the Civil War Monument. T. J. ‘s wife Harriet, and their two children’s names are on it, Ada Fisher Henderson and Willie J., and Ada’s two children, Mildred T. Henderson and Lloyd Fisher Henderson. Ada was divorced so no husband. He was buried elsewhere with 2nd wife. Other than Ada’s private headstone, no others are in the vicinity of the Monument. *(Under research currently.)As to the Fisher Hill Cemetery, it is not known of who of the Fisher family members may be at rest in the Fisher Hill Cemetery. It could be Nathaniel and Mary, the baby son and baby daughter of James and Mercy. It could be the resting place of James and Mercy Fisher Hobart. The just past owner of this part of the Fisher property, kept the small cemetery hidden and well protected, as it should have been. There are TWO graves that are now known of officially. As one comes upon this well-hidden treasure, the top of a gravestone peeks above the foliage that surrounds it. Upon close inspection (as it is in rough shape) and a comparison of the photo in Kathy Fant’s book, “History of Orange Village”, ‘the headstone at the Fisher Hill family cemetery’, it is the exact headstone in K. Fant’s book. On the stone of today, the ‘HOBART’ name is recognizable as well as the NZO of ALONZO’s name. If you view the Kathy Fant’s photo in her book, and enlarge it, most of the stone then was still readable. This is the missing son of Nathan and Mercy (Marcy) Hobart. He was born in 1838 and accounted for in the 1850 Census at age 12, then there was nothing. While searching newspapers, an obit was found. Name: Hobart, Alonzo H.Date: April 7, 1858Source: Cemetery record, Reel #38Notes: “Hobart – This morning, April 6, at his father’s near Chagrin Falls, of Neuralgia and inflammation of the brain, Alonzo H., son of Nathan and Marcy Hobart. Leader Massillon News and Canton papers please copy. 1858 Evergreen Hills Cemetery Chagrin Falls, Ohio.” Also, a smaller, well-hidden and protected headstone stands nearby. It is the headstone for baby Willie James Fisher, son of Thomas Jefferson and Harriet Amelia Fisher. “Willie J. Son of T. J. & H. A. Fisher died August 29, 1870 Aged 8 mos. 20 ds.” For the headstone’s age of 149 years, it is in beautiful condition, with a carving at the top face of the stone, within a circle, of three leaves and a hanging, broken flower bud (a picture representing a young life cut short.) Near Alonzo’s stone, there is a stone base where the headstone is missing. Alonzo was Willie’s half uncle.Find A Grave states James Fisher’s burial was at the Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Memorial ID 124444475 – View source.
