CHECKLIST OF WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR THE EXAM

THIS HANDOUT CONTAINS A LIST OF WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR EACH SECTION IN THE EXAM, YOU CAN ADD TO THIS LIST IF YOU WISH. IT IS A BASIC GUIDE TO PREPARE YOU BEFORE YOUR EXAM TO ENSURE YOU ARE ON THE RIGHT TRACK.

THE RED TEXT WILL TELL YOU WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR EACH PART.

THE BLUE TEXT WILL TELL YOU WHAT MARKS ARE GIVEN FOR EACH SECTION AND MODULE.

APART FROM SECTION ONE, ALL SECTIONS CONTAIN A THEORY AND PRACTICAL PART. SO IT IS BROKEN DOWN INTO THEORY AND PRACTICAL. THE THEORY IS WHAT YOU WILL WRITE IN EACH SECTION OF THE PAPER. THE PRACTICAL IS WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING ON THE COMPUTER IN THE EXAM.

You must do SECTION 1, 2 AND 3 ON THE PAPER. SECTION 3 HAS OPTIONS, EG THERE ARE 5 DIFFERENT MODULES IN SECTION 3 AND YOU CAN PICK ANY 3 OF THESE.

NOTE: Most of the Theory Questions that come up in this Word Processing Section are very straight forward and you will know how to perform most items on the list as you perform these functions everyday in class. However in all theory parts you are not actually carrying out the task of E.G. Changing the page Layout from Portrait to Landscape, you are actually ‘explaining in writing’ on paper to the examiner how you ‘would’ do it. Remember you can quickly check on your computer in front of you in the Exam, where the button is to help you explain it. But, as the exam is long and you want to save as much time as possible, it’s a good idea to go through this list and practise in your head, or on paper, how you would explain it. Go through the ‘Drop down Menus’ to check what they are.

PRACTICAL: 70M: Revise the following:

IN SUM: You will get a document and you will have to Change it by using the symbols drawn on the document. You will have to insert text also.

1. Revise the ‘Symbols’ Sheet Handout Given.

2. Know what the following Symbols mean :

3. Insert text, also insert date and page number

4. Transpose, delete, insert, new paragraph, upper case, lower case, underline, full stop, capitals, justify, change the size, Point, hash key, run on, etc….

THERE ARE 5 OPTIONS AND YOU ONLY PICK 3 OF THESE.

MODULE 3= DATABASE (80M)

MODULE 4 = DESK TOP PUBLISHING (80M)

MODULE 5= INTERNET (80M)

MODULE 6 = TEXT ENTRY (80M)

YOU ARE FREE TO PICK ANY OPTIONS YOU WANT. IF YOU FEEL MORE CONFIDENT WITH 3 MODULES IN PARTICULAR, THEN PREPARE THEM WELL. YOU MAY WANT TO DO E.G. MODULE 2,5, AND 6.

Module 2 = Spreadsheets

THEORY: 10M: Revise the Following:

Revise the ‘Excel Notes’ handout given.

1. What does a ‘Pie Chart’ look like, why use one?

2. What does a ‘Bar Chart’ look like?

3. What is a ‘Cell’, ‘Row’, ‘Column’?

4. What does text that’s ‘right aligned’, ‘centred’ or ‘left aligned’ look like in a ‘cell’ look like?

5. How would you get the date/ the currency or a % in a Cell?

6. Name 2 types of charts you can draw using a spreadsheet package?

7. What do these symbols mean = / * X + - ?

8. What do we mean when you have to get the sum, and the average?

PRACTICAL: 70 M: Revise the Following

In SUM: You will have to create and change a spreadsheet using formulas and functions, also you may be asked to create a chart.

1. How you Add, Multiply, Divide, Get the Average, Get the Percentage, The Sum, Round Off

2. Calculate VAT, discount, wages, profit and loss, commission

3. Putting Labels on Columns or Charts.

4. Know how to Copy a Formula Down

5. Know how to change decimal places, change to a different currency, to change to left or right align,

6. Create a Chart, e.g. Bar Chart.

7. When Printing, Know how to Print with ‘Gridlines’, practise using ‘page breaks’ and ‘fit to one page’ options for charts and Information.

8. Practise All Past Questions to get used to how they ask a Question so you know what they are looking for.

Module 3- DATABASE

PRACTICAL: (70m) : Revise the following:

IN SUM: you will be asked to Create, Edit and Change data in a Database

1. Open a database, edit or modify it

2. Add records, delete records

3. Add a Query on the Database

4. Sort the Database in ascending or descending order

5. Exit the data base using the proper procedure.

Module 4 – Desk Top Publishing

1. Name two ‘input devices’ that you could use to put a photo on a document?

2. What is ‘text orientation’?

3. What is a ‘text frame’ or a ‘text box’?

4. Name two ways that a ‘text frame’ can be ‘enhanced/changed’?

5. Why would you use a ‘border’?

6. What do we mean by a ‘fill colour’?

7. How would you go about ‘formatting a picture’ and then resizing a picture, making it easy to use?

8. How would you take a piece of ‘clip art’ from a file and ‘attach’ it to your document?

9. Where would you go to get an ‘object’ e.g. a circle or arrows (what toolbar)?

10. Where do you go to choose a ‘new toolbar’ that does not appear on your screen?

11. How would you create a ‘column’?

NOTE: AGAIN, LIKE ALL THEORY SECTIONS, YOU MAY KNOW WHAT THE QUESTION MEANS AND YOU MAY KNOW HOW TO GET CLIP ART, BUT YOU ARE BEING ASKED TO EXPLAIN IN WRITING HOW WOULD YOU GET THE WORD ART, OR CHANGE A PICTURE SIZE,SO YOU NEED TO PRACTISE HOW YOU WOULD EXPLAIN IT. YOU CAN CHECK HOW TO DO IT BY USING THE DROP DOWN MENUS IN THE EXAM. BUT PRACTISE BEFORE HAND WILL HELP YOU TO WRITE IT FASTER AND MORE CONFIDENTLY.

PRACTICAL: (70m) : Revise the following:

IN SUM: You will have to access Publisher and create a Publication. You will be asked to move text to columns, or reshape it, insert text or graphics.

1. Borders and shading

2. Inserting and resizing Objects

3. Create Text Frames and Link them

4. Alter Text orientation

5. Creating and Resizing Text and a Heading/Banner

6. Creating columns, leaving the heading out

7. Placing text boxes on the document, inserting text and resizing them

8. Insert a picture, or Word Art and formatting it

9. Using the Space Bar, Tab, Backspace and Enter/Return Key to Move and Manipulate text.

Module 5 : The Internet

THEORY: 10M: Revise the following:

Revise the ‘Internet Notes’ Handout given.

1. Know what the Capital letters/Abbreviations stand for e.g., HTTP,WWW, URL, LAN, WAN,ISP

4. What is a ‘hyperlink’?

5. What is a ‘virus’?

6. Name three items or devices you need in order to ‘connect to the internet’?

7. What is a ‘bookmark’?

8. Why would you use the ‘favourites’ option?

9. What is ‘Uploading’ and ‘Downloading’?

PRACTICAL: 70M: Revise the following:

IN SUM: You will be asked to use the World Wide Web to search for and download pages, and use Email to send an email.

1. Know how to use a search engine e.g. Yahoo, Google

2. Find Information on a Web Page, save and print it.

3. Know how to use the URL i.e. the address bar at the top

4. Know how to use a hyperlink

5. Know how to download information e.g. in print out form or to save on disk

6. Ensure that your email account is in working order before the exam and be able to open a new message, type in who you want to send the email to, use a cc or carbon copy, type the message and send.

Module 6 : Text Entry

THEORY: 10M: Revise the following:

1. Just ensure that you have a pencil, because you have to mark the paragraph with at least 10 errors. There will probably be more than 10 errors, so try and get 12 or 13 and they will mark you for the most correct 10 errors.

PRACTICAL: 70M: Revision the following

IN SUM: You will have to Proof read a document and pencil in 10 errors. You will have to produce a document in Menu, Agenda or Notice style, maybe adding in a Picture or Border.

1. Know how to do‘double line spacing’ or ‘single line’ spacing.

2. Know how to do little symbols such as a €,½,²,° etc..

3. Know how to enhance/change text e.g. font, size, word art, clip art, insert clip art, centre, overall presentation is important here. etc…

IN SUMMARY

1. Go through the list of what you need to know for each section. Practise writing or doing each task on the computer.

2. Revise all the notes for each section.

3. Practise all your exam papers to date e.g. 2009,2008,2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002,2001

4. Get familiar with the Layout of the Paper and what you have to do in each section.
