This week we will look at ic 21: Children are introduced to the concept of negative and positive numbers for the first time in 5th class. They should be able to understand these concepts in a variety of contexts, e.g. temperature, money, golf scores, sea levels and lifts. Talk about floor levels when in a multi-storey car park or when using a lift in a shopping centre, comparing temperatures on weather forecasts and reading golf scores on television or in the newspaper.Before you begin you could look at the following warm up activity from Planet Maths 5th class online. your own log in and enter ‘Directed Numbers’ in the folens online search bar. You will see an activity called ‘Temperatures’ Rem. you do not have to do all the qtns. Try a sample of ic 23: Children can be encouraged to observe patterns in their environment, e.g. in the built environment (architecture, garden designs, home furnishings), in nature (plants, on animals such as butterflies, cobwebs) and in art (M.C. Escher, Sol Lewitt, Josef Albers).
