Oral Language Development Lesson: Theme- Clothes Objective: Through talk and discussion the children will use vocabulary including more sophisticated nouns and adjectives relative to the topic- ClothesClass level: 1st/ 2nd classOverviewThe children using the spotlight tool are asked to describe what they see using adjectives and nouns. They are encouraged to guess what each item is. The items of clothing will then be shown one at a time using the reveal tool. The children will identify the items of clothing and use the eraser tool to see if they identified the correct word. The children then use the pen to follow directions to dress the person (all objects will be grouped and locked). The children will then describe the outfit using adjectives. The children will give the items of clothing their corresponding written label and colour label.Step by step guidePreparationChoose items of clothing from activ inspire resource library. Chose a clipart image of a child for dress up from activ inspire resource library (with under wear on). Type the names or the items of clothing beside each item and colour over with pen with same colour as background, reorder text to back. Lock dress up person in centre of flipchart. Duplicate page. Cover over the first flipchart page using the circular spotlight tool. Cover over the 2nd flipchart duplicate page using reveal tool. On the 3rd duplicate flipchart page add colour and item labels to the duplicate page, lock text to rectangle shape and reorder text to front. Reorder items of clothing, i.e. t-shirt to back, jumper to front.Lesson activityI will draw the children’s attention to the interactive whiteboard. I will move the spotlight and ask the children to describe what they see. I will ask the children to guess what each thing is. I will move to the duplicate page of the flipchart to use the reveal tool diagonally to show to each item one at a time. The children will identify the item using the correct noun, the children will then use the eraser tool to uncover the written word for the item of clothing orally identified. On the next flipchart page one of the children will give an oral direction to another child, the pupil will follow the oral directions dress the child (on the flipchart) by using the pen to move each item onto the body of the dress up child and orally describe the outfit using adjectives. I will ask the children to give the items of clothing their corresponding written label and colour label.ConclusionThe children will be given the opportunity to extend their expressive vocabulary by dressing up the image of the child in different items and describe the outfit using clothing nouns and describing adjectives. “The girl is wearing a ..... and.....” DifferentiationWords for clothing items / colour labels could be colour coded- eg. Green (easy) hat, sock / Orange (medium) jacket, scarf / Red (difficult)- tights, trousers. Weaker pupils reveal the word and read the label with the aid of the picture. More able students could be asked to write the word under the item instead of using the eraser tool to reveal the correct spelling. Hints and tipsUse the spotlight/ reveal tool to encourage engagement and active learning. Include items of clothing that may not be in the children’s expressive vocabulary to challenge them and extend their expressive vocabulary e.g body warmer, hoodie, long johns, flip flops etc. AssessmentExpressive Language and vocabulary observed. Observe the use of appropriate nouns and sophisticated adjectives to identify and describe items of clothing. Extension ActivitiesDress up barrier game: The children could have a cut out of clothing items that are on the flipchart. A child dresses the child on the interactive whiteboard out of sight of the children and gives oral direction to describe the outfit they have put on the child. Each child puts an outfit on the cut out in front of them. The flipchart is then revealed to the class and each child checks if they followed instructions correctly to recreate the outfit on the child on the flipchart.Writing activity: The children choose items of clothing to put on the child on the flipchart, using the pen they write a sentence to describe what the child is wearing including adjectives. E.g. The girl is wearing a pink woolly jumper and blue denim jeans. Etc. ................
