Spring is upon us. And with it, we’re offering a variety of classes to expand your knowledge of the network programs that you use so frequently!

Please make sure you review each course description carefully; there

are some classes that have stipulations prior to registration

(some have prerequisites and others may require specific accounts to participate in the computer class). All of the PC classes are hands-on and held in the Dionne Lab located in room 216, McEwen Hall. Macintosh classes are held in Room 215, McEwen Hall.

NEW THIS SPRING:

We are offering classes in Microsoft Office XP and the new GroupWise 6 web-based e-mail.

When you have selected the class you would like to attend, please register by either sending an email message to TRAINING@Hofstra.edu or calling the Help Desk at x3-7777.

A member of the Help Desk will confirm your registration. If you are unable to attend a class for which you are registered, please call us in advance so that someone else may take your seat in the class! Our waiting lists can get rather long!

Basic Computer Classes:

Windows Basics:

This is a 2-hour introductory class on the basics of the Windows operating system. You will learn: about windows, icons, folders and files; how to use your mouse; how to find files and folders using the My Computer icon and Windows Explorer; how to customize your desktop; how to access on-line Help. You will also get some tips on how to manage your files, create directories, where to store your data and how the Hofstra network is set up.

Word Processing:

Word 2000 Basics:

This is a 1½ -hour class where you will learn: how to create a simple mail merged document using primary and secondary files. You will also learn how to use tabs in your documents rather than “spacing over.”

Banner:

Banner Navigation:

This class is required of all new Banner users, and is a great way for veteran users to refresh or enhance their skills. In Banner Navigation you will learn how to get around in Banner, and how to perform common tasks, such as searching for people or organizations. You will learn how to create a personal menu. We will also discuss federal and University policies and procedures concerning the use of Banner.

Faculty Computing Support is offering the following courses to enhance the Faculty’s use of Technology. These courses are open to all university employees if space is available.:

Web Development:

2-Hour Web Page with HTML:

The first hour will cover: An overview of the Web (Browsers, Servers, and Web Pages), Hofstra’s Web Resources (Hofstra Web Site, People Server, Blackboard, Novell accounts, student web page server), and HTML (simple Web page creation, other uses of HTML, HTML "tags").

In the second hour attendees will create a personal or course Web page on their People Server account using the material they brought to the workshop (vita, syllabus, etc.). Equipment and assistance for taking a picture and putting it on the Web page will be provided.

Introduction to Photoshop:

Learn how to use a scanner to bring images into the computer for printing or to use in PowerPoint presentations or Web pages. This workshop will show you how to manipulate your images in Adobe Photoshop to enhance them and modify them to suit your needs. You will also learn which image file formats you should use. Dreamweaver & Web Development1:

Learn to use Dreamweaver to create and publish a web page on the Hofstra server. You will learn about basic text and document formatting, the structure and design philosophy of Web pages, and the creation of lists and hyperlinks to other resources. Discover how Blackboard can help you get course materials online. Create your own course site and put your syllabus, handouts, and assignments on the web. PowerPoint has been described as a super-charged electronic slide show. In addition to creating a simple PowerPoint slide show, the seminar will show participants how to incorporate graphics and simple animations into their presentations. All the computer stuff you wanted to know, should have known, or forgot. This seminar is designed to remove the mystery from computing and enable you to impress people who don’t come to this seminar. A significant portion of the time will be available to answer questions and respond to requests by attendees. Among the topics are:

• How to cut, copy, paste, switch between applications, close an application, etc. all without touching a mouse.
