Need an emission test?
Here's what you need to know
Most air pollution in Washington is from motor vehicles. In parts of Clark, King, Pierce, Snohomish and Spokane counties, the Emission Check Program reduces pollution by identifying the most polluting vehicles and requiring them to be properly diagnosed and/or repaired.
Emission Checks are required every two years for vehicles in an Emission Check area.
Authorized Test Facilities
You may have your vehicle tested at any of Washington's 16 contractor-owned test stations.
You may also bring your vehicle to an Authorized Test Facility. You will find a list of these facilities on Washington's Emission Check website:
Pub #94-BR-08 (rev. 9/13) R printed on recycled paper
Things to know before you go for a test
n Do not perform maintenance work or make repairs before your first test.
n If you drive a 1996 or newer vehicle, do not disconnect the battery before testing. If your vehicle has recently had a dead battery, drive the vehicle for a few days before testing.
n The test fee is $15 at Applus test stations, payable by cash, check, VISA, MasterCard, or Discover. Fees will vary at non-Applus testing locations.
n Bring your vehicle to normal operating temperature before the test.
n Lines are shorter mid-day and mid-month.
n Once in line, turn off accessories, but do not turn off your engine unless instructed to do so.
n Do not bring pets to the test station.
n Oversized vehicles (over 30 feet) can be tested at all stations, but we recommend they test at a station printed in bold on the station list.
n Anyone can bring a vehicle in for a test, but only the registered owner can obtain a waiver or register a vehicle.
Applus Test station hours
8:30 am to 5 pm Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri. 8:30 am to 6 pm Thursday 8:30 am to 2 pm Saturday Closed Sunday and holidays
Severe weather or power outages may prevent or delay testing. Authorized Test Facility hours vary. Contact the business before testing.
What if my vehicle fails its emission test?
If your vehicle fails the test, it cannot be licensed until it either passes the test or is waived from further testing. You will be given a copy of the Emission Check Vehicle Repair Guide that contains the information you will need.
While anyone may repair the vehicle, we recommend that you have it diagnosed and repaired by an Authorized Emission Specialist (AES). These technicians have been trained in the diagnosis and repair of failing vehicles. Their repair shops are familiar with Emission Check Program requirements and are equipped to perform the necessary repairs.
What do I do if my vehicle can't be repaired?
Your vehicle may be eligible for a waiver if it has failed a retest and you have spent at least $150 on diagnosis and/or repairs performed by an AES between failing tests. Repairs done before the test or by someone other than an AES will not count toward a waiver.
Waivers can only be granted:
n For vehicles repaired by an AES.
n For vehicles that do not have removed, altered, or inappropriate emission control systems.
n At Applus test stations.
Authorized Test Facilities other than Applus test stations may not grant waivers.
How do I get my tabs?
Once your vehicle successfully completes the emission test process, you can get your tabs online, by mail, or in person from a licensing agent.
Your vehicle emission test must be in the Department of Licensing (DOL) database for you to get your tabs. If your vehicle passes its emission test but DOL does not have the test record, go to and place your cursor over the tab "Test Record" at the top of the page. Then click on "Can't Renew Tabs" in the drop-down menu that appears.
