Prerequisites:

1. Anatomy and Physiology or taken concurrently with CNA class

2. GPA 2.5 or higher. Attendance 90% or higher

3. Current BLS CPR card or taken concurrently with CNA class

Course Description:

This course prepares the student to provide basic patient care under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Once completed you are eligible to take the state exam to be certified as a Nursing Assistant (CNA). Employment opportunities for CNA’s primarily include hospitals; home care and long term care facilities

Course Outline:

Course content includes the following topics and relevant skills:

• Roles and Responsibilities of the Nursing Assistant

• Communication and Documentation

• Safety, Standard Precautions, and Infection Control

• Admission, Transfer and Discharge

• Body System review, common disease and malformations

• Vital signs

• Activities of Daily Living:

a. Normal Elimination Assistance

b. Oral and Denture Care

c. Hair/ Nail Care

d. Skin Care

e. Bathing Assistance

f. Personal Care Assistance

g. Shaving Assistance

h. Dressing and Undressing Assistance

i. Anti-Embolic stockings

j. Bed making

k. Nutritional / Fluid balance Assistance

l. Special diet Assistance

m. Mobility and ambulation Assistance

Requirements for Nursing Assistant Class:

1. According to the curriculum guidelines set by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, a student taking the nursing assistant course must have the following:

a. Minimum of (3) comprehensive exams with a minimum score of 80%. This is required before you are able to take the comprehensive board-approved exam.

b. Successful “Pass” on all skills that have a checklist for evaluation.

c. Have a minimum of 75 hours of classroom instruction and a minimum of 100 hours of clinical time before taking the final skills test and the board-approved exam.

2. Students will need to bring their own lunches during clinicals and are not allowed to leave the clinical facility until the scheduled end time.

3. Skills lab and clinical absences are strongly discouraged and must be made up. When skills are missed, the instructor will set make-up times at his/her own discretion. Students are responsible to notify the skills/clinical instructor prior to any suspected absence.

4. The final exam is monitored and will be given on a scheduled day. Re-takes must be scheduled with the Examiner. You are not allowed to use any materials (books, internet material, notes, etc.) other than a blank sheet of paper and a number 2 pencil for the exam.

5. Missing assignments and skill components may affect student’s grade and ultimately jeopardize the opportunity to met the requirements to obtain certification.

Immunization Requirements:

Students must provide proof of up to date immunization record as well a list of the follow prior to attending clinicals:

1. Recent Diphtheria/Tetanus (DT booster) immunization

2. Hepatitis A and B (series of immunizations)

3. Two step Tuberculin (PPD skin test for TB)

➢ If history of positive skin test, need recent chest x-ray

4. Influenza

5. Chickenpox (Varicella) Vaccine

Program Costs:

1. Cost will be approximately $125.00 and up (depending on number of uniform sets purchased). Two sets of scrubs is recommended.

2. Steel/charcoal grey scrubs are the required uniform. Students must wear scrubs for clinicals as well as in the classroom. Students may also purchase a white scrub jacket (not required).

3. Watch with a second hand

4. Stethoscope (any color) Cost approximately $10.00-$40.00

5. Gait belt Cost approx $10.00

6. Current “Health Care Provider” CPR card. $5

7. CNA Student patch $6

8. White or black leather shoes (closed heel and toe). Athletic shoes are acceptable if clean and 90% white in color).

9. Immunizations costs will depend on individual needs and can be acquired at most public health clinics, urgent centers, or private physician’s offices. Done on your own.

10.  Family Care Safety Registry $14.50 (paid for by student).

11. State certification $20 Cashiers check or money order (leave blank)

Dress Code

Students are responsible for wearing the required attire during class and for each clinical day.

Scrub top and bottom (appropriate under garments not visible). No fake or painted finger nails. If hair is colored it needs to be a natural color.

Certification of Completion:

Each student who successfully completes the course shall be issued a certificate of completion by the school. The certificate represents the student has successfully completed the nursing assistant course of study.

In order to be certified as a NA, students must:

• Complete an approved CNA training program (this course).

• Pass a skills exam, given by an instructor other than that student’s classroom instructor.

• Pass a written exam, given by an instructor other than that student’s class room instructor.

Both portions of the exam (skill and written) may be taken up to three times. Remediation is available. After the third unsuccessful attempt, student will have to repeat the CNA component on their own. Re-takes must be scheduled with the examiner. The cost will be the responsibility of the student.

The following is the course grading scale:

A 90 – 100

B 80 – 89

C 70 – 79

D 60 –70

F Below 60

** PARENT/GUARDIAN CONSENT AND STUDENT COMMITMENT**

This course clinical schedule is set up to include only the minimum number of hours required, therefore absences are not permitted. In case of emergency, contact the instructor prior to the scheduled shift that you will miss.  Make-up hours may not be possible and will depend on instructor availability and program budget.  Only (verifiable) family emergencies and illness are considered valid reasons to miss skills class or clinical. Lack of Instructor notification for absence at clinical or skills may constitute reason for failure and dismissal from program.
